My selection is: 58mm Manager (I usually have another light on me); 84mm Bantam (Combi tool is absolute best in SAK line up for can opening, bar none); 84mm Walker (For clearing annoying plants when walking along pathways); 91mm Super Tinker (Great scissors, useful Phillips screwdriver and awl, and larger knife; 111mm One Hand Trekker (Great saw, good knife, tools still too stiff, I keep breaking my thumbnail trying to open them). This selection covers most bases, but deciding which one to take every day is a dilemma!

I agree with you about the Ranger. I have an older one that lives in the car and a newer one at the ready. With both saws and scissors it's too big for normal edc (that's left to the Super Tinker and/or Pioneer X) but it is always with me in the outdoors.

Carrying the Compact since two years now and it's the best Vic ever. Especially because of those amazing unique features like the pen or the mini screwdriver. Nobody would probably expect you to have these features on a knife ... Only one knife would be better... the Compact mini; a 85mm model based on the Compact. But nothing out there so far.

I wish I'd bought the midnight manager lite more than once. I wanted to replace my tinker small all together but found I couldn't live without the larger (sturdy) blade. I work in warehouse settings part of the day and the office the rest. I don't really care for the Alox handles. Just doesn't do it for me. Cheers

My Executive did not come with a sheath. I have and carry the Compact for a year now. I dislike the combo tool. I prefer my Tinker and other models. However, the Compact is a useful tool. It is very strange that the Compact currently cost about $45 where the Super Tinker and Climber which are full size knives and three layers currently cost about $30. Nice Review!

My fave too, I went for it as I used to have an old-style Victorinox German Army knife but lost it years ago and now they're no longer made, so I looked at the new GAK but this is not UK carry legal as it's one-handed opening and the blade locks, plus it's too big...the Hiker has all the same features but it's UK legal.

My personal ideal mix would be a Climber with plus scales, a serrated main blade (really useful with bread and other food on the go, leaving the pen blade for utility tasks and the scissors for most everything else), and the Compact's hook with nail file. I have a spare used Compact I might cannibalize for that if I can also get my hands on another Serrated Spartan. Three layers is a bit thick for EDC, but I would find room for that tool set.

Excellent video on Swiss Army EDC. I agree on the Ranger being a great full size SAK. That metal file is great for dealing with dangerous or annoying burrs. I have a Ranger Plus. I use the Ramber vs. the midnight manager as I really use the toothpick a lot. I put a Leatherman PS on my key chain when I am carrying my Ranger through because it has a toothpic.
@MinstrelOnTheRun

snowpuppy77 Thank you! The Ranger is just such a sensible and efficient model. I feel pliers are much better covered with either a full-size model elsewhere in your gear (the Leatherman skeletool makes a great accessory to SAKs), or a convenient keychain model like you have in your system. Even at that size, Leatherman pliers have SAKs beat.
@snowpuppy77
9 жыл бұрын
Yes even the small Leatherman Squirt size pliers are more robust than a SAK. However the SAK pliers have plenty of reach and good control making them very good for fishing. clamping sinkers and removing hooks. In fact my ideal fishing knife would be a Victorinox Angler with a pair of scissors. My very first SAK was a Vic Fisherman and I just loved it. However I always had to clamp my sinkers with my teeth. And yes I prefer the corkscrew vs. phillips. My fisherman model has a corkscrew vs. a phillips like the new one.

Dont worry about roughing up the scales. They can be replaced fairly cheap. The Vagabond alox is the perfect small SAK IMHO. Now if you dont carry a light, or pen. Then I'd recommend the midnight manager in white light.

While I have a Compact, my complaint would be the hot spot generated in hand by the very much raised edge of the folded combo tool when using the main blade. My similar 91 mm Golfer does not have this downside for me. With that, I can also throw my 1.55 ounce 84 mm My First Victorinox Plus into my pack or messenger bag for that Combo tool + saw + usefully different secondary blade. Thanks for the well done comparison / summary review! P.S.- Regarding the smaller knives, I do tend to prefer my Vict. Alox Money Clips (red & silver, 74 mm) and my Wenger Esquire Stainless Steel (screw pivot, 64 mm) to my Midnight Manager because of the larger, better performing scissors; which is my only reason for needing any of these smaller models [as complements to another one or two main/backup EDC folders]. YMMV.

Interesting point about the combo tool hotspot; I haven't notice it much as I seldom use the Compact's blade, and when I do, it's not very heavy duty cutting. Looks like you have done a lot of experimentation/carry for your EDC system!

still waiting on the update..... for me my favorites are the FieldMaster in the Gadsden yellow or the ALOX Harvester. Honestly, the hawksbill pruner blade of the Harvester is my most used blade. As I work for a major telco, having to work with aerial drop wire, bury drop, box opener, etc. The saw blade for drywall saw for duetting hole for jack. The awl for punching out screw holes on wall plates to insert an anchor. The flat screwdriver, drywall screws, pry bar to remove old wall plates, and as a scrapper when needing to remove paint for a ground strap. The large blade is primary kept for food such as slicing apples. If the Harvester had scissors and tweezers would be set that is where the Field Master with the added Phillips screwdriver shines. just wish there were more knifes with the Pruner blade... replace the small blade on the Field Master with the pruner blade would be my perfect knife. If you could build your own, what would it be....

You can find the current (hexagonal-handled) model pretty easily on Amazon (www.amazon[dot]com/VICTORINOX-REPLACEMENT-PARTS-Mini-Screwdriver/dp/B00MXBMSE0/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=victorinox+mini+screwdriver&qid=1600170605&sr=8-1). I would also recommend buying a replacement parts kit at some point which includes several of them, as well as springs, key rings, toothpicks, tweezers, and pens you're likely to need if you collect enough SAKs. I got the original, round-handled mini-screwdriver featured here by writing to Victorinox; they said they would send me a couple as a one-time courtesy.
