Yup. Been working at a hardware store for a few months and already know 20+ codes, it saves so much time especially when you have to deal with small items (pipe fittings, electrical connectors) that either don't have a barcode sticker on them or the sticker is wrinkled up and you can't scan it. Also have around 200 of them written down on a small notebook for the stuff that routinely comes without the barcode but I can't be bothered to memorize. In an 8-hour shift I can easily get 300-400 customers while most of my colleagues get 250-350. And I don't have to waste time calling up to ask for the barcode.

He may be fast, but not terribly efficient. Seriously, 50 gajillion keystrokes for what appear to be a Haas avocado? Simple - type the PLU code "4046", then "1" for quantity. Then move it to the bagging area. He's using five times as much physical effort as he needs to, and so appears to be fast, but I could out-scan him even at a much slower rate of actual physical movement, by being efficient. At the frantic rate he's going, I'd like to know how many unintentional overrings and voids he has.

I don't get why so many companies are so strict about you being that fast. When I worked as a cashier, I just went at my own steady pace. And I had a lot of compliments about that. Going too fast is what causes you to drop them and break them/spill them.
