I still think Craig deserves some credit. He was made technical advisor for the first two FF movies and he had to fight for his R34 to be in the second movie instead of a Neon SRT. If Craig wasn’t involved, neither would his cars. So yes Craig does deserve his fair share of credit for the price hike.

I've been playing Gran Turismo since the original on ps1. For me, its the R32 that always had my heart. I love the R34, but the R32 is just better imo. And the Supra didn't really catch my attention until the 1st FnF movie, but only as an introduction to it. Never wanted to build one FnF style. I always liked the Redux style, or Top Secret Smokey Nagata style Supras. Did FnF influence current prices? Yes. But I don't think it was a major significance in difference if it hadn't. Like you said, most of us grew up learning about jdm legends before the movies came. The movies, more than anything, was influenced to exist because the jdm tuner scene already existed and was growing big.

I remember playing Gran Tourismo, and one race called for a car class I didn't have. So I found a custom car that I didn't know and soon fell in love with it. Like you said, FnF did well because the cars in them were already popular, although they did help make them appeal to a wider audience. The movies themselves didn't influence prices that much or we would have seen prices skyrocket when the movies came out in 2001-2003, instead it's only been the last 5 years that prices have blown up. So what has happened over the last 5 years... social media usage maybe?

Great video. I'm going to be honest, the Fast and Furious did play a big part for me purchasing my Supra. I was 11 years old when I saw that movie, dreamed of owning one since then, and it is still one of my favorite movies to this day. At 29 I bought my 94 LHD turbo 6 speed targa top (targa/sport roof was a must for me) on June of 2019 for $40,000. It's not low mileage (140,000) or one owner anything crazy, but the prices definitely are going up. I'm one that will never sell no matter what the prices go to, just love having it.

Feels surreal to have finally achieved it ❤ The prices are going insane for everything JDM, but like you I don't ever want to sell mine, so the "investment" side of things is futile 😅

Did F&F play a role in the rising prices of Supra's and GTR's? Definitely. Was it the sole reason though? Absolutely not. It's a combination of things as Craig and other people have said really. 100% agree, although I'm a bit confused by your numbers, Craig. Your Supra count is US only (1993-1998) but the GTR is the global count? What about the 1998-2002 JDM Supras? I'm curious how they factor in. I do know that with the 25 year rule over there, a lot of our Australian Supras are heading off-shore, which is fine by me as it only makes Aussie Supras more rare (ie: less supply). I just saw a "rare" 2002 Yellow Aero go for about $80k here in Australia. Apparently it was "1 of 1". Anyway, personally I've owned mine since 2005 and I'm not selling it as it's worth more to me than I would ever make selling it anyway. Pretty sure it's the only fully working modified Tiptronic Supra in the world.

I have the honor of owning two Supra's. Owned a Super Red 4 1993 Supra SZ from 2007 to 2010, bought it for £3500 then modified and done a BPU and converted her to an RZ twin turbo fully loaded running at near 400bhp, had full Bomex body kit, TRD Bonnet, 18' gun metal deep dish OZ alloys, greddy 4 core intercooler, apexi air filter, apexi afc neo, blitz boost controller, custom straight through exhaust system, blitz gauges, tein super street adjustable suspension, tein front and rear strut bars, Momo steering racing wheel, momo pedal from I bought when I went to Japan, it was a beast. Then October 2010 some silly lady forced me to go off the road to avoid her and I went into a concrete central reservation because the lady was too stupid to see me coming as she obstructed the middle of the road and was meant to wait in the side road until I went passed but hey thats a story I want to forget. Fact is cosmetically the red supra I had was written off but I took it to my friends garage stripped everything off it, took time off to recover. I luckily found a Gloss Black Supra SZ a month later for £2k and transfered EVERYTHING that was on the red one into the Black one, so since 2010 I still own the black supra, currently putting on a bodykit consisting of rear Bomex spats, Blitz side skirts and Do-Luck front bumper, looking forward to it all being completed.

Craig the reason they say it's the movies fault is because those cars were largely ignored and prices were getting lower and lower, then all the kids who watched the movies and grew up and got their license they all wanted these cars. I called it back in early 2000's after watching the film. Then add in the boom of the tuner scene after the movie and hey presto. As soon as the 15 year rule for Canada and the 25 year rule for the U.S. kicked in that's when I see the prices in Japan starting to sky rocket, and then you have people buying them over there and storing them there until they are old enough to import for however many years when those cars would have come to the UK at a quarter of the price previously. Then add in the illegal u.s. imports that will all be getting crushed soon and we will see the prices rise even more as there will be even fewer cars left.

I'm in Australia so we've had all the Japanese performance cars for decades. The FD RX-7 sold here was full house spec with all the options plus we had the Australian Showroom Production Racing which comprised of everything from Suzuki Swift to Porsche 968 CS. Most people have never heard of an SP RX-7 which was a homologation race car that Mazda Australia sold to the general public for a mere AU $110,000 with a swag of carbon fiber and upgraded parts that helped the RX-7 beat Porsche in the famous hatrick of wins. The last surviving black car sold for AU $160,000 in 2021. Prices here for FD RX-7s has more than doubled and tripled in recent years. I'm lucky enough to own the very last FD RX-7 sold here new in 1999 (1998 Series VII) which I've had since 2010. It's still sequential turbo and only a handful of mods (I've retained all the original parts) which I hope one day to be recognised as something special.

The Supra Mk 4 was produced until 2002 actually just how the 300ZX Z32 was produced from 1986 to 2000, in Japan of course so any post 1999 Mk4 Supra or 300ZX would be genuine JDM. I think the economy too is a factor. Asia had the 1997 crash and it affected the region with Japan's bubble that's already bursted. People spend less and demands become less so many iconic JDMs were ended production in the 2000's and 2F2F was shot when Nissan rolling out the last remaining R34 GT-Rs from the factory. Production ended nearly 20 years ago, skyrocketing demand and fast dwindling supply, the price will just going up and up and some conmen will take a GTT and covert it into a faux GT-R and con the life savings out of those who couldn't contain the nostalgia.

Gotta be honest, my love of the supra definatly comes from f&f. I was very young and loved it, but i did already know about the supra from games. I have owned 6 supras, 1 mk2 1 mk3 and 4 mk4s. Currently still have a mk4 and it will not be going anywhere, even has number plates 3NTQ305 on it.

Mines DTM but It's like for instance with my BMW E46, the prices keep going up each year due to ricers getting their hands on them and wrecking them or turning them into drift spec, so all your oem or properly modified E46's keep increasing in price, it also depends on what model you have as well, if you have a model like the M3 for instance that's high in demand you're going to pay a lot more, my car is almost up there with Ferrari and Porsche prices, just driving it around I get offers all the time from people trying to buy my car, sorry not for sale, in my opinion the e46's are like the general lees all over again, more get wrecked and less out there the higher the prices, that simple, EDIT: who doesn't want a right-handed Drive Supra, thats culture there.... id rather have one of them with the 6 Speed, Turbo than a automatic 5-speed that is on the left side driving without a turbo.... same would go for an r33 or R34 Skyline it has to be right sided Drive, also I see Graig Lieberman is a man of culture himself showing off Initial D and Gran Turismo

Not so much, I remember in 2005 you could still get auto TT MKIVs for under $10k Australian landed and delivered. You would have hated us to see how much R34s went for back in those days too, under 20 all day. As the import laws only applied to cars that were being sold new here, the R34s were being bought in as soon as they were in the sale yards in Japan .. Personally I was a R33 guy myself. and only the R32 was sold new here. I remember driving the Supra in Need for Speed 2 , but I probably spent more time listening to the audio descriptions of each car and the (pretty cool for 1997) full motion video sizzle reels though.

There was actually just a bit over 40000 mk4 supras worldwide, that 11000 is just for the US market which were actually sold there brand new, r34 gtr was never sold in the US brand new so I cannot understand why the price of a locally delivered car (supra) is so over inflated when there was never any need to pay import charges/shipping/taxes, when the 25 year rule is applicable for the mk4 a80 supra there will almost be an over abundance of them to be purchased from Japan unlike the r34 gtr which there will only ever be 11000 or in your estimation 9000 left.

The secret to a new movie is get ppl like Adam lz , previous movie actor like James Bond , and tyrese Gibson, and do car culture right in movies with sponsored events around cars with family’s and food to change the narrative around car building as a community idea

It’s like this- everyone says the first F&F movie created the Supra “legend”, but no one asks themselves why exactly the Supra was picked to be the apex tuner car in the movie. Well, it’s because the MKIV was the apex tuner car of the 90’s, definitely in North America and mostly in Japan. Being a participant in the tuner culture- and before 20 inch rims and ridiculous graphic became what defined what tuner culture was- it was about taking the latest import car, usually turbocharged, and seeing how much more power could be exploited. Of the 90’s Japanese sports cars to be rebooted as serious performance machines, the Supra was the last and made a huge impact. Beyond the accolades awarded by mainstream auto publications, magazines like Turbo magazine highlighted just how stout and tunable the MKIV was. Supras were often cover cars and featured heavily, and became the apex platform that everyone wanted. GTRs, R32/33/34s we’re always desired but unobtainable, building their legend here. Beyond that, Supras have their own motor sports history, with JGTC series in Japan and even LeMans entries, as well as American tuners that forged the legend of the 2JZ in drag racing, well before the movie ever came out. Myself, I fell in love with the MKIV after seeing it on the cover of the March 1993 Road & Track, and about eleven years ago I was fortunate enough to buy a low-mileage example for myself.
