That big kite is BIG. The sort that gets away VERY quickly. Well done keeping it out of the water

Thank you for showing your routine for dousing the spinnaker without a sock. I was wondering how that would work on a cat... I suspect it's going to be a lot more fun to do solo. :P

Go as deep downwind as you can and make sure you blanket the kite with the mainsail. Don't try to do it without using the main 👍

@@youngbarnacles Hah, I just figured I'd let the tack or clew loose and then let the halyard free an try to bundle it in before it winds up in the water... Figure I can sort it later as long as it's dry.

Nice video, thanks for sharing. Will be interesting to hear your definition of a performance boat as well. I do think that there are always asteriks "*" in there when people talk about windspeed boats. Was this when the boat was stripped out ready for racing, no dinghy, no water or gas in the tanks, just the absolute essentials...or was it a boat laden for cruising. Did the boat sort of tickle windspeed on certain points of sail in certain sea conditions. My limited experience has been on boats that can easily sail in the upper teens and lower 20kt range you spend more time managing your speed and slowing things down to make it comfortable and safe. It's wild thought because a sustained 16-17 kts in 20kts of true seems planted, comfy and plent fast enough. Since there are not any rules on the internet (other than the Internet police of course) I define a windspeed boat that can routinely sail within 10% of true wind speed when laden with a full kit for cruising.

Great explanations and a nice view of all the fittings on your mast! In a future video can you show us some more detail on that spinnaker tack contraption? I see a brass (?) dog bone on one side of the ring, and there looks like some kind of clamp/guide/holder fitting on the other. Was the ring repurposed from something else? I am also guessing that padeye in the bow was already there and you are just taking advantage of it, or did you install it with this in-mind?

The padeye on the bow was already there so that was great. I believe you are looking at this bad boy www.antal.it/ENG/hooks_en

Fyi- dispute doom sayers with home schooling all three, 10 years later, are doing well in university! (Master Neuroscience, Chemical Eng, B. Sci) Cruising builds amazing kids. Christine and I are cruising again and the kids visited us in Greece this summer for three weeks. They were amazing and dropped back into the grove no problem. You are doing a good thing for the family!! (From Kos, Greece at anchor)

We always put 2 halyards on bosuns chair when someone is going up the mast. Just in case, and they are already there, why not use them?
@youngbarnacles
Жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct. We recommend using 2 halyards when going up the mast. Whenever we are working on a client's boat we have a secondary halyard connected to the fall arrest system at all times. We only have one halyard that goes all the way to the masthead. As we are riggers, the halyards on Paikea are in top condition and Shayne keeps a close eye on them and will change them over at the first sign of wear. We trust them for a quick trip up the mast. If Shayne is working up there for any extended period of time or the weather is dubious we'll use an extra halyard for safety. Probably should have mentioned that in the video... Don't try this at home kids 😅😅

Would you run the spinnaker without the main up
@youngbarnacles

Yes as long as you keep tension in the topping lift and mainsheet to ensure stability in the mast. You don't want to pull your mast over the bow 😉
