Simple, but very economical grid-tied solar installation. This system is grid-tie only. It uses SolarEdge Inverter with optimizers on each solar panel. Some panels face different azimuths (East, South, and West) and have different angles. An array like this requires a way to optimize each panel independently. The choice came down to SolarEdge or Enphase.
The goal of this project was the most economical, fastest ROI. That stands for return on investment. This was a professionally engineered, and installed, system. The owner decided not to install batteries. There is no backup system at this house. If the grid goes down, the solar goes down. The owner felt comfortable with this decision because the grid is extremely reliable in this location.
SolarEdge uses a single string inverter (10kW in this case) for the array. Each solar panel has an "Optimizer" linked to it. This optimizer does a few things. First, it complies with rapid shut-down requirements. Second, it allows for MPPT of each solar panel (Maximum power point tracking). Third, it allows monitoring of each solar panel. The MPPT on each panel was needed for this installation since the array is split into smaller pieces with different angles and azimuths.
