At various Los Angeles theme parks I’ve seen artists use a larger black “rubber” pad. Is that what you’re using below your paper? Since the papers are drawn on a large clip board like yours, these black pads are used to add “bounce” to the pressure of the tools applied. I know someone’s going to recommend just adding more paper for the same purpose, but I’ve been searching for these pads. The closest thing I’ve seen are “signing pads” used at stores when you’re closing out a check by the register. I’ve asked employees at these stores and caricature artists what those pads were and how to get them, but all have said they didn’t know. Any leads?

Hi , I briefly worked doing caricatures at a theme park and it is just a thin foam pad. You can buy it at a Michaels or similar craft/art store. It will probably be in the aisle that sells kid centered crafts . It is just a very thin foam pad , people use it in crafts , they will cut it into shapes etc. Hope this helps !!

+John Valcas It's a conical tip marker. Usually the best type of marker tip for doing this kind of work. (but also the hardest to find) You can go from a thin to thick line by angling the marker and changing the pressure as you draw.

+John Valcas, This was an Avery Marks-A-Lot marker, bullet tip. I usually find them at Staples.com. I like using it because it keeps me loose and it gives off less odor than other markers.
