While I agree it happens fast with this fly weight pipe on a work over rig... try a brutally cold winter night in Wyoming with 15 to 20,000 feet of 5 inch drill pipe and a cross wind, or worse, a wind coming at you from behind of about 40 to 45 mph... Just pulling that first stand back will remind you get your rest before showing up for work. Going in the hole is pretty easy if your aim is good and the stands are at least chest high. I don't really like those short stands where you sit on the diving board and push the stand in just and it clears the cowscock so you get the elevators starting to close before you can reach them to finnish the latching up of the elevators. Never latch a stand of collars on the fly... you could hurt or kill a floor hand real easy with a stand of 10 inch collars leaping off the floor.

Hi :) Mind if I ask? : What pipe is that they're tripping? Looks small. What do you call the assembly under the traveling block that grabs the pipe, the assembly he latches? And why make it happen at full speed on the way up? why not slow down right before the latching occurs? Is it just to do it as fast as possible, to test themselves/for fun?

This is great! I did this for Pool Well Service in Santa Maria, Calif., in 1984-86. Hated the job at first but once I learned it, I loved it. I loved the camaraderie of the crew. We went fast like this guy and when the low oil prices crushed the industry starting in late 1985, we made it until March 1986 before we all got laid off. But working derrick was a GREAT job and I still miss it here in 2022.

1977, age 17, I got a call. Want to make $80. Sure. I need a derrick hand. I had never worked the derricks. That night we would pull over 9000' of drill pipe and collars, back in the hole before the next tour came on, we were back to drilling. I slipped up on one stand, I was lifted several feet into the air, I got the elevators closed and dropped back down on the ears.

it seems a little unkind to me too, to run so fast past the derrick hand, but I'm no expert. Someone above said something about throwing the pipe in works better because the thing locks on its own then. Does that make sense? Can you explain please: the thing that latches on the pipe, which hangs off two forged eyes/loops under the traveling block, is that the elevator? It grips the pipe for elevating it from the floor, or from horizontal position? Does the elevator come off for a top drive to hook on, or are those elevators only used with Kelly drive rigs? And that's a workover rig? Different than a drilling rig? 'Thank you! So many questions, I know lol

Tripping pipe, means either coming in or going out of the hole right? So you will literally be doing this for 12 hours a shift up there on the monkey boards? I don't pretend to know much about oil and gas, but I sure find the top drive and kelley rigs pretty interesting. Wish I could work one for a few weeks, but I don't think I'm big enough for tossing tongs and shoving pipe around.
@moralezfamily3047
6 жыл бұрын
Chad Harzbarger yes tripping pipe means you are coming in or out of the hole. It can be 12 hours or even 30 minutes depending upon what's going on. They might decide to start a trip 30 minutes before your shift is over. It makes time fly by quick and that's really when you get to know the hands your working with. Everything is all technique buddy you can either work the iron or let the iron work you. I've seen 5'6 tall 90 pound weighing guys pull back 8 inch collars. The tongs are easy to throw, they just wear you out after doing it all day. If your on a too drive it's pretty laid back but if your on a Kelley then it's just a little rougher, but it is doable by anybody who is willing to learn.
