I have a lot of experience with these. I am one of the people that don’t care for them. Like clockwork they die off at about 30 years. At this point they are giant and an absolute pain in the ass to cut down. Hope you haven’t planted them near buildings because unless your trade is logging or an arborist you’ll need to pay someone to take them down. Grow fast, yes. Die after 30 years like the life span says 100%, then you have nothing again.

I bought an older home with a huge Tulip poplar tree in the back yard where the driveway is located. It is HUGE and yes, does provide a lot of shade. BUT, its root system is as big as the tree and my once paved driveway is a bumpy driveway because the roots have grown underneath. This tree is constantly dropping branches, large and small. In the warmer months it spits sap from the leaves, the pollen and the spent flowers and leaves are always on my car. I am not sure how old the tree is, but the house is over 140 yrs old. its probably 5 ft in diameter.

These trees get way overhyped. Ya they grow fast-ish. But they're very thinly filled. A maple will shoot even faster and at least it fills out. Spruce is slower but has needles all year long for wind breaks. Not a fan of poplar toothpick trees.

it depends on the poplar, some species are slim and just grow straight up as you said, however other types of poplar will grow into a wide tree just like a normal tree would

I looked it up. Says they grow well in planting zones 3-8. You look to be in zone 5. And I’m a tad warmer in zone 6… so you should be good. Best of luck, take care!
