I started a role as a technical product owner last year and I basically do business analytics now as part of my role because people have questions about our data and I love diving into it. Thankfully this meant I had to learn SQL and then I paired that with Python. Now I'm taking this Google course to learn some R and later I'll learn Machine learning as well. My ultimate goal is Data Science but I think this is a step in the right direction.

Hey man that's what i want to get into, product owner or product manager at some point? any guidance?
@FrocketGaming
Жыл бұрын
@@ibizawavey8630 Truthfully, I'm just lucky to be in this position. I had no experience in this role prior, I just knew the business side of this industry and had technical skills from my own interests. I just happened to get a manager that saw my capacity to learn and gave me the chance. With that being said, the things that have made my transitions easier were building close relationships with the developers, learning SQL and constantly asking questions in a way that lets others know I want to learn and be self-sufficient. Building a relationship with the stakeholders is huge but thankfully I already had many of those relationships in place. I had other Product Owners I could lean on for support, I read various books on the topic and continued to review how I wrote stories or prioritized the backlog to see if I can improve the process.

@@FrocketGaming Hey man, thanks for the message. I stayed up late last night doing research and I have a strategy. Let me know what you think. 1- Get a business analyst role in a high growth company 200 employees, no start ups (too chaotic) 2- Once I get my foot in the door, network like crazy, ask questions, maybe take some side projects 3- Learn the Product owner side of the business on the side and then approach managers to leverage those existing relationships for a role. This is the best strategy I could come up with. Today i'm starting my journey to become a business analyst. Now that i'm writing this, it occurred to me to figure out who hires BA in the first place and cozy up to them.

Having never worked in data analytics, I took your advice here and completed the Data Analysis in Python "project" on Coursera. It was my first time using Coursera, and what I got was a certificate of completion, but not really a project to show an employer. Suppose I include the link to my Coursera certificate on my resume...does that count as a "portfolio project?" It doesn't show my work to give someone a sense of how I code or think about a problem, so I'm curious if the certificate is something an employer wants to see, or do they need a project where they can actually see what I did?

Wait, I have a question that I really need answered. When you’re talking about going to Coursera do guided projects and you say you follow along on videos and stuff as you do it, is that actually portfolio ready?? I subscribed to a different data analysis learning tool (and even bought a lifetime sub on a huge discount cause I really really enjoyed the way it taught stuff) and it also has guided projects that you do. If you get stuck on the guided projects it has example code on how to do it. But I always told myself that I can’t use this on a portfolio because it’s someone else’s code. Like I can understand the code once I look at it, but I wasn’t able to do the project myself and then I tell myself I failed and get demotivated from doing other projects. But it seems like you’re saying it’s okay to put a guided project with guided code on your portfolio? Or am I misunderstanding? The portfolio and doing projects part is such a killer to me right now and so demotivating when I try to do one and get stuck. Sorry for the super long comment 😞
