Brad, I came across your channel from an unrelated video recommendation. First off, fun fact, I grew up and graduated from Wake Forest Rolesville High (present day split into different schools) in North Carolina back in 06'. You got 5 years on me and it appears from your video we are doing the same thing following up our childhood dream. Aviation for me: I was 12 years old in my first discovery flight at KLHZ, soloed after ~15 hours at KVDF when I was 26, got my ppl at KVNY in my 30s. I observed you are doing more than normal researching around. My advice to you is to go with a part 61 school to get your ppl first, then decide what you want to do after with your aviation endeavor. Don't go all in a part 141 school rushing your ppl, like a kid does, and NOT having any idea what kind of pilot you will see yourself turnout to be. You will get an IDEA of what kind of pilot you are capable of becoming after you've learn your regs, comm, and completing your first solo cross country. You will KNOW to yourself after your first checkride with a DPE.

Thank you so much for sharing your journey and advice with me! I graduated high school from Leesville Road in Raleigh, so I'm very familiar with Rolesville. I appreciate your detailed advice and personal story. It means a lot to have your support as I navigate this exciting aviation journey. It's always inspiring to connect with fellow aviation enthusiasts.

I'm glad you liked Blue Line! I just moved to Clayton today to start getting ready and buckle down on the written tests starting next week. The worst part is not knowing how long it will take to study for each exam with the time crunch! Blue line forces you to take Kings School which was good but after I went through Sportys entire Private Pilot practice question bank which I found super helpful with how they provide explanations on why the answers are right or wrong. I ended up getting a 97% on the PPL written, but I definitely studied until I could answer almost every question in the sporty's test bank.

That’s amazing Ryan! Congratulations 🎉 I just signed up yesterday to start at Blue Line on April 22nd. I completely understand the stress of getting the exams and ground school done. I haven’t started Kings yet but I did use Sporty’s some. Sporty’s and Sheppard Air seem to be similar in test prep approach, but it looks like Sheppard Air is cheaper. Depending on how things go with Kings, I might purchase Sheppard Airs material as well. Good luck and hope to see you at Blue Line soon.

@BradTakesFlight shepphard air is probably what I'll use for everything other than Private since they don't have a Private prep, I think they just recommend other resources like sportys for private.

@@JourneyAboveTheCloudsThats correct. You can buy the private course for $299, or they have a subscription service that includes PAR, IRA, and CAX for $60/mth or $399/yr. I'm thinking of doing that and then using Sheppards for my FOI, FIA, FII, AGI, and IGI

@@BradTakesFlight sheppard does not have a private pilot ground school. Also, ATP is a part 61 set up as a part 141. This is what I was told by two ATP Texas locations and one in California when I asked them. Read all the reviews for any flight school. Read all the fine print on the contract you sign. Especially the refund part. Don’t go by what they tell you. What they tell you is not what they will go by. If you are not passing their checks in a timely manner you may get one maybe two chances to try again. You more than likely will be let go if you do not pass those checks. Do your due diligence.

Good points on the discovery flight differences, and the interview process. Working with a business that has a minimum standard of expectations is another good point. I'm also considering a career change later in life, something I always dreamed of doing but never pursued because of color blindness. Taking the alternate color test in order to get a 1st class medical seems to be my biggest hurdle so far. Thanks for the process breakdown videos, very informative Brad.

Thanks Pete! Definitely don”t disqualify yourself. There are so many options and ways to get that 1st class med, it just takes a little more work. Good luck 🍀

You need 190 hrs for CSEL at a part 141. You had the correct info the first time. If they told you 120 hrs, they are jerking your chain and being salesmen. 250 for part 61.
@Flying_Ute

Or it’s a 120 hr syllabus for commercial. That would make lots of sense.
@BradTakesFlight

I misunderstood the minimums for part 141. So the minimums are 35 hrs for private, 35 hrs for instrument, and 120 hrs for commercial. This would bring your total hrs to 190 for your commercial license.
@Flying_Ute

That is correct. 190 total. There isn’t a federal regulation about how many hours you have to work on your commercial for. It’s more of a total hour thing. So at part 61 you can be at 200 hrs by the time you get your instrument all finished up and then as soon as you have 250 you would be eligible (hours wise) for the commercial license. The syllabus of the 141 school is what is demanding the 120 hrs. Good luck on your journey!

Great video. You mentioned in a previous video that you will be not using Stratus bc of their predatory interest rates (totally agree). I’m curious as to who you will be using for financing and if you could share details about that that would be awesome. Thank you!

That is correct! I am going to be using my home equity for my loan. If you have First Citizens Bank in your area, then check them out. I got a 6.4% fixed rate. This is a home equity loan and not a home equity line of credit. You may not have that type of equity to tap into, but if you do, First Citizens was the best rates I could find in my area.

You better read the Reddit posts on this school. Seems criminal!

I’ve been here for two months without seeing any crimes. 😂 Take everything you see and read online with the grain of salt, including myself. The Internet is not a bad place to start your research, but it shouldn’t be the end of your research either.

@brazibeatz5187, I believe that most 141 flight schools allow you to get private and commercial at reduced hours. The only thing is that for the restricted ATP at 1000 hours, one has to get an aviation degree from an approved college program.

Appreciate the information, it's valuable for those considering a career in aviation. I knew there would be some reduction in time. I was just shocked by how much the reduction was.

No! You can do other things to build time like banner towing, flying skydivers, surveying, agriculture, etc.
