Somewhere in our human DNA we want to find the shortest path to being good with a step by step road map. That is not audio at all. That is why it called an art. Once you understand the basic ideas/equipment, your brain and ears provide the art. Great video!

You are so 100% right! Very well said. I’m very happy you like the video. You clearly have a very good understanding of what it means to be a great mixer. Thank you for sharing that, and thank you for being a valuable part of the channel!

This is the realest talk about mixing I've seen on KZitem in quite a while. I've struggled with those issues myself and I still struggle because Iearning is (*has* to be) a constant, non-stop process. I immediately subcribed as soon as the video was over, great stuff 🔥🔥🔥

Thank you so much! I’m very happy that the video connected with you in that way. I try to think back to all the things that really helped me the most and share them with everyone. You are also 100% right when you say this is a never-ending learning quest. If I don’t learn something new everyday, I feel like I’m slacking. Thank you for sharing and for being on the journey with me!

You are so right again. Sometimes I think knowing the tools you have is more important than anything else. In fact I come back to use the stuff I know the best and not what others fancy. I have a hard time right now to understanding Pro-Q3 , cause I normally use other eqs....and it is so overwhelming. But Im getting better. LOL.

I’m so glad you agree and that you like the video. It’s also very true what you were saying about knowing your tools. A carpenter who knows a small set of tools can get everything they possibly need out of all of them. They don’t need the latest and greatest, and they can do work that surpasses all of that using only what they know best. It’s the Bruce Lee concept, he does not fear the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks. He fears the man who has practiced 1 kick 10,000 times! That’s why I stay using the SSL channel strip lol. Pro Q3 is great for certain things though when you need super transparency and surgical control.. . So worth practicing that too. But if they come out with proQ4, i ain’t biting! Lol

Well said . I discovered some weeks ago that my problem was a lack of practice on static mix. I obsessed with compression and other stuff. Then, i kept struggling with finishing a mix faster.😂😂. So i decided to download 100 songs with track out. Already done 40 songs( volume and pan knobs only). Wrap it up, work on your basics, you have to know what you're doing. 90% of your issues come from that

I really like your style of developing. That way of practicing you just described is very helpful. Without getting a good handle on what it means to make great balances and pan decisions the rest is all moot points. Thank you for being a part of this channel and the journey!

When it comes to presets for plugins, there are 2 plugins I use presets for: The Waves "SuperTap 2-tap", which has the preset "you too?", which I really like, and the Waves "API 2500", which has great presets for a few things, and I basically just adjust the threshold. That is, the snare, bass drum, and bass guitar presets. They're great, basically without needing any adjustment. But I don't use presets for anything else.

Hi Man, thanks for your great suggestions. I am guilty of using presets too readily. I will work on using presets only on fx plug ins in the future.🙏

I have pad for one video of Andy Wallace mixing Avenged Sevenfold and it changed my world. One video of the highest quality, top dog industry. He never mentioned any frequencies or type of compressor/compression ,ratios, go to frequencies , presets, settings etc...All he does is listen and sweep until he gets what he needs ( that snap, the crack, the punch low end support, shading, stereo field, the ambiance, gate, throws.) There is no 40 plug ins on Mixbus, chains or anything, just ears and feel of the master.

Damn, Evan, you hit us with that gut punch 😂 this is the exact predicament I have been encountering, mixing for hours and hours and realizing its trash and start muting plugins to see where it's at. Question though, what about people who don't have acoustically correct spaces who know they're not hearing everything correctly?

That's the boat I'm in, too. I can tell it messes things up. I plan on getting actually decent reference headphones soon to compensate -- at least until I can set up a treated room. But it's definitely crucial and there's no way around it.

Acoustica Sienna and a set of headphones that Acoustica has profiled for their plugin. Best way to work until you can afford to treat a room. Works well for me if I’m not in a treated environment.

@@giantbeerecords No real reason other than I like how comfortable my DT770s are and didn’t want to give them up. Watched several review videos where vsx and sienna were compared to each other. They seem to be on par with one another. Sienna has served me well and they have an extensive list of headphone profiles. I believe they even profiled the vsx headphones 😂. They have the headphone list on their website as well as a free version of their plugin.

Facts on facts. Learning a plugin's in and outs is a huge hack. And this goes for your DAW of choice itself as well. Learn that thing like the back of your hand. You'd be surprised the difference how much you understand something makes in terms of how you use it.

You are absolutely right! Spending the time to learn the tools, including the DAW will absolutely save you Boat loads of time in the future! The reward is exponentially greater.
