Yes, please overview what methods you've tried and landed on for tapering these short flat boards into shingles. Here, used cedar fence boards are ubiquitous, but I've noticed that shingles are tapered. And it's not obvious how to taper 6” wide boards on a table saw or other common tool, especially at scale. FYI: I'm in Austin Texas, and recently I gathered 8 tons of reclaimed wood using just my motorscooter. Simple tools allowed making pallet decks, work tables and simple tarp shelters. I'm now designing a modular work shed with heavy storage in the second story loft. Later, I want to fill the front yard with raised beds that may turn into mini greenhouse.

What type of wood are the pallets made from? Does it matter what species they are made from? How long do the shingles last?
@WineberryHill
Жыл бұрын
There is a pretty wide range of species, but oak and pine are the most common. Oak will certainly last longer. Duration will depend on where it's installed and the weather. I've gotten 10 years on mine. Coating with boiled linseed will also help.

They look great. The reason I’m watching is b/c I need wood shingles, I love using them on my projects but Lowe’s hasn’t had them lately. I’ve always wanted to make my own anyways. I’ve thought about just buying wood boards and cutting them down. Right now I could use some really thin ones, I know it sounds crazy but I’ve been considering shims 😬 I’m working on a small space, i think it’d look cool.

@WineberryHill

I have done it in the past, and it ends up, making them too thin and likely to warp. Since they aren’t tapered, generally the solution so that they lay reasonably flat over each other is to reduce the amount of courses that you run.

Do you use pine or oak for exterior shingles? Or both? I would think oak would hold up better. What has been your experience? I come across a lot more pallets made with pine than oak. I do find quite a few that are made of unknown hardwood. Maybe tropical? Thoughts? Thank you. I enjoy these videos.
@WineberryHill

When it comes to shingles, I use what I can find and pay more attention to the thickness to make sure they are similar to each other as possible. Obviously oak is best , and if you can stockpile them prior to a project even better.

Yea. I wanna know more on this. Bout to wrap moms shed with pallet wood. Gonna use my reciprocating saw to cut the nails and just leave them in an work around them for big pieces and go horizontally. I like the vertical shake planks you have got going on here. Looks wise its good. But how about for wind? Like all those butts. I am gonna put vapor barrier. But it seems like i would get a lot of moisture still? Lemme watch this agin.

Do you use wood varnish outdoors? In Poland we must protect every wood that stays outside because after a cold winter it will look awful and start to stratify. I saw many films from Canada and they also protect wood. So are you using some sort of magic in the US or another kind of wood that doesn't require varnish? I tested vegetable oil a few times with wood and the results were impressive, but most varnish and paint used on wood are based on chemistry. Please don't feel offended by my question. I just feel like my mind will blow every time I watch films from the US with such nice looking wood that seems not to be covered with any kind of protection material.
