I also have both a 26" and a 27,5" fatbike. The 26" is much better for my riding. I love technical climbs, and singletrack, all year round. The 26" is already a BIG tire. Jumbo Jim 26x4,8 is perfect. More nimble and playful. 27.5 is simply too big in tight turns. Same as I prefer 27x28 over 29" on regular bikes.

I finally got my second fat bike with CST Roly Poly 4.8 tires and I can proudly confirm that the amount of fun increases exponentially by the size of the tire :) maybe in a not so far future I'll buy a pair of Surly Lou tires to test them out

Will someone tell me please if the 27.5 tire rim is better fitted than the 26 tire rim for a female of 370lbs about 5'8". Also, do anyone know the quality of a 300.00 Windsor brand bike compared to a 100.00 Genesis brand bike?

I think you would be a good candidate for the 26” wheel size for a fat bike. I am not familiar with either of those bikes so can’t really comment. At that price point I might recommend checking out the Mongoose bikes.

I ride my fat bikes full time xc in the Arizona desert. All three are configured tubeless with 26X4.0. I tried the 27.5 and 26X4.8 tire setups and I'm just not strong enough to get those bigger wheels rolling up the shortish technical climbs we have here. Also, the 27.5 X 4 0 was way slower feeling in the tight corners. The 26X4.0 floats great over sand washes as well as it did up in the Idaho ungroomed snowy trails. I'm all about choice and love seeing the different sizes but unfortunately with the bike industry the least popular will usually go bye bye. Thankfully, 26X4.0 tires are still out there but are getting rarer. The most common reason I've heard from folks that have tried fat bikes and didn't like them is the heaviness of the tires and difficultly pedaling them which I totally understand. 26X4.0 is the lightest and fastest rolling of the bunch yet still providing plenty of rollover capability. Tire weight is similar but slightly smaller diameter means quicker acceleration. Anyway, thanks for all the great fat bike videos, lots of useful info and very entertaining.

@@soemotional1809 at 370 lb she has to be concerned with more than just the tire! I'm heavy also, about 260 and the research I've done is that most manufacturers only rate their bikes up to about 300 lb total capacity. I've broken so many bike parts I can't even count them all because of my weight and strength. She might be better off riding a stationary bike or getting on a treadmill to lose some weight and get under that 300 lb mark as much as possible before she starts riding an actual bicycle no matter what type it is.

I'm trying to decide what size to go with and what I want is maximum flotation do you think a 27.5x4.5 or a 26x5 would perform better in virgin snow? thanks.

I think they would perform pretty similarly. 27.5x4.5 is overall the biggest combo possible so I would lean towards that size for max performance.

Good afternoon! Perhaps you have made changes to the inflated tires? I'm interested in the diameter with tire 275*4.5 and 275*4.3. I have a Fucare Taurus electric bike for 26*4, but with my height of 184 cm it is a little short for me :( Thanks in advance for your answer 🤝👋

I don’t have a 27.5x4.3 or 4.5 mounted up right now to measure, but either of those combos will be significantly taller than 26x4. You would need to be sure that your bike has enough frame clearance to accommodate the taller/larger wheels and tires. Have you considered trying a bigger tire on the wheels you have? A 26x4.3 , 4.6, or 4.8 will also ad significant height.

Hey Tommy, thanks for all the tire variety information. I also have a ‘19 Crestone and a ‘21 Beargrease. Hard to choose between the two. (I’m 5’9” and the Crestone is a Lg and the Salsa is a M, but they both feel great to ride!) I was curious if you have any input as to how studded fat tires measure up for frame clearance versus non-studded? I’m trying to fit my wife’s Fatboy with 27.5x4.5 D5’s studded on 70mm wheels but afraid they might rub…(for how much tires cost, I’d rather not go through the work to find they don’t fit!) any input would be awesome! Thanks! Happy Riding!
@ElevationEveryWeekend

Both the Crestone and Beargrease are great carbon fat bikes! As for your question, generally speaking I would say if you have proper clearance to run the tire size you want, adding studs shouldn't be a concern. But if you are already pushing the limits on the tire size, then yes I would probably be cautious on adding studs, or adding and downsizing the tire a bit. I believe the Fatboy only ever shipped with a 26" wheel, so methinks going 27.5x4.5, which is the largest possible size you can run, will likely be a close call. Maybe try to go down to a 27.5x4" tire? Terrene offers a 27.5x4.3" tire (Yippee Ki Yay), which I love, and is studdable. It might get you just enough clearance. Its just hard for me to say not being to familiar with the actual clearance on the Fatboy. In the tire playlist I mentioned in the video, I have a short video that compares 27.5x 4, 4.3, and 4.5 for reference too. 4.5 is massive!

@ElevationEveryWeekend
10 ай бұрын
That's a tough question, many variables such as your overall height/reach, and your budget and the conditions you are looking to ride. I would encourage you to buy the best bike you can afford to meet your needs, and definitely look at the local used market. I would probably recommend a steel frame bike like a Surly, or an aluminum frame bike. These will both be sturdy, durable bikes. While I think either wheel size would work, I think getting a 26" wheel would have the advantage of giving you a little more tire sidewall to work with, good for heavier riders to limit potential for rim strikes. If you can actually test ride whatever bike you are considering I would encourage you to do so.

I was 305 this spring and am down to 270 or so now, I'm also 6'4", so not sure how tall you are. I found aluminum frames to be much better than the surly bikes I rode that felt wobbly and the reach was way too short for me even in the biggest frame sizes. I found a great deal on a 2019 Specialized Fatboy XL and it's been treating me very well, although I did upgrade to GX Eagle 12 speed. Best of luck amd happy cycling. PS, depending on your cardio and goals a fat ebike may be a good option if you are just beginning on a cardio journey but they are much more expensive.

Hi! In terms of rolling resistance how would a lou/bud compare to 27.5 Yipee Ki Yay ? What would be the diameter of the two, would the Yipee increase the stand over height of the bike compare to the Lou/Bud ? I m just about to have a custom build fatbike and can t chose in between the two, I would use it more in the woods, many climbs/descends, mostly single tracks and muddy/ dirt condition. Thanks for your videos, they are really informative, they did help a lot!

I feel like the YKY is a much faster rolling tire than the the Surly Bud/Lou combo, mostly because its a half inch more narrow, and when aired up that combined with a shorter sidewall makes it roll faster and feel more responsive, it is a lighter tire too. The overall height of the 27.5 YKY is a bit taller than the 26x4.8 Bud/Lou, so yes it will raise the BB and standover height slightly, but I bet its almost indistinguishable. But when aired down it will still give a long contact patch and tons of traction and flotation.

@@FigyElek-nb2xw Any of them could do it just fine. The Surly and Salsa have the most mounts, but these days there are plenty of storage options that don’t require mounts. I have already setup my Salsa for adventure riding though (video below), so it’s the bike I will keep for that. The Flume would probably be my second choice of the bikes I own. I was asaking more regarding the frame geometry without taking the mounts and weight in account wich you feel more comfortable for long rides/climbs/descends, I feel the salsa beargrise maybe a bit more trail riding, the crestone and the ICT seem to have a bit more comfortable frames for “long distance riding” but I m unsure as I never had the chance to try them, thank you! @@ElevationEveryWeekend

@@FigyElek-nb2xw the Salsa and Surly do have a slightly slacker geo than the Borealis bikes, but honestly I don’t think it’s enough to make a huge difference for longer adventure style riding. I have ridden all three bikes on all the same trails and dirt roads around here and they all been great. Honestly the lighter weight of the Borealis bikes has been the biggest difference I have really felt mile after mile.

I can confirm that the Terrene fat tires are certified for class one e-bikes, I'm not sure about 45nrth. 45nrth makes good tires, but my preference are the Terrene products. I ran the 27.5x4.5 Cake Eaters studded, and they were amazing in the ice and snow. I run 27.5x4" Cake Eaters now on my Flume, also have been great all rounders, will be testing them more in back country snow soon. Borealis specs the Terrene 27.5x4.3" Yippee Ki Yay on their new Keystone e-fatbike. I have ridden it and I think its the perfect tire for an e-bike, so that would be my recommendation. I have done some recent videos on the tire, and the Keystone with those tires on it if you want more info!

@@cedarwings82 well, I have had great luck with 27.5x4, and studded will be even better. Obviously nothing will be better for snow traction and flotation than the larger 27.5x4.5, but whether you need the extra really depends on the conditions you ride, and the overall weight of you and the bike.
