If you keep having the issue of losing power or the bike shutting off replace the Crank shaft position sensor & engine temperature sensor. Had the same issue and it started having a real hard time starting after already being warm. Replaced those 2 parts and haven't had the problem since.

No wonder the bike over heated. You keep down shifting at high speeds which causes the bike to turn high rpms. Harley’s aren’t made to run high rpms. They aren’t a sport bike, they are made to cruse, unless you have a stage II or larger high performance kit in it. Also when you are up shifting, don’t easy the clutch out. Shift and let the clutch out immediately, almost simultaneously. It’s not a big truck.

I run a high compression motor in my 1999 FXDX and it has shut down on me in stop and go traffic in DC during the summer. I plan to add a HD oil cooler to my 2015 Fatboy to prevent that from happening. The FXDX isn't a stop and go traffic kinda bike anyway. The Fatboy handles those conditions much better. You did the same thing I did - just hang out on the side of the road and let her cool down. You got it right - it is just a motorcycle thing. On a side note I like the seat on your bike. Scott

Yeah, if you're doing long travel in a air cooled softtail in 100 degree weather going 90mph, you're going to run into issues. Just a tip, don't do 90mph in that condition. Just cruise it down.

Lesson learned John. Glad it was learned without incident. I've heard a few more serious breakdown stories with the Milwaukee 8 being ridden hard in the heat for long distances as well. Hell, I've had modern cars have trouble under the same conditions.

Hi Min good to see you on the beast, it's strange the bike shutting off at sustained speef---on the FP3 app there's a section that shows fault codes, might be worth checking to see if there's a code there, I would want that sorted out,but I'm OCD with my Fatboy lo Special, you'll find the fault code section if you hit the maintenance section on your app,hopefully this helps. Totally agree with you as regards those true ks hauling houses etc, the roads here are much smaller & I see loads of these grotty little shacks being transported. Enjoy your break,& let me ow if you find out what caused the shutdown. Those mighty mite fans are supposed to be good too, all the best to you & family Min 👍👍😎

Hey Geoff. I will check the app to see if it lists some type of error. I can't believe they allow trucks to haul houses on some of those more narrow roads. I can't believe government allows such traffic disruption for the convenience of a person wanting to transport a home.

Check your battery cables. Sometimes they get loose and this kills the engine intermittently

You should check your codes because my shit runs hot too up to 200 degrees Because I bought one of those temp gauges on for my oil but I have a softail slim s and I ride 100-110mph on interstate in florida and I never had my bike shut off yet ever from over heating since I bought my harley.

I like cruisers, but if HD is all that's left, I think I'd have to relegate one to bar hopper duty. Too many issues. OTOH, they could use that to their advantage: Harley Davidson: The bike that makes every trip and adventure!

Would you consider an Indian? If my biggest concern were reliability and having something American made I'd probably go there. I was impressed with the Springfield and the dark horse.

I owned a Victory and it was a great bike. I'd still have it if I didn't plant it in a deer. Polaris engineers are top notch. Unfortunately, they're kinda held back by marketing. I loved the Vic's engine and the way it made power. I'm not as fond of the 2 valve head Indians. They have more punch off idle, but peter out too early. I could put the Vic in 3rd gear and ride mountain roads all day. Run from 25 mph to about 70+ mph like a rheostat. Riding between 3-5k rpm, the engine reminded me of a BMW boxer. The suspension was perfect for street riding, it had good ground clearance, and handled like butter. The only real issue was the front brakes were pretty weak, but worked well in combo with the rear. The Indian front brakes are much better. I've heard good things about Indian's suspension too. The roads were decent enough where I've ridden them that I couldn't be a good judge. I'd be kinda afraid to ride any air-cooled engine in the desert very long. Especially at lower speeds. The Love Jugs thing would help with that. It surprises me that it cut off riding at highway speed though. Having a bike that cuts out on the highway is playing a dangerous game, but if you find its a heat related thing, the cheaper route may be to install an oil cooler. They were stock on Victories, but since Polaris started playing Harley, they charge extra for them on Indians now too. I have a cheaper solution. I ride a water cooled Kaw Versys 1000 with Harley highway pegs for stretching out ;)

I'm surprised it cut out at speed too. At the speeds I was maintaining the rpm should have been around 3500. Producing more heat than I would at less than 80mph which translates to less than 3000 rpm on this bike. Temp was likely near 100. On an air cooled bike I should have been more aware my rpm's and avoid unnecessary bursts of acceleration. As I mentioned in other comments above, I can't be sure I didn't hit the fuel switch as it lives next to my throttle hand. I still want an Indian but 3 bikes is more than I could use and it would be a waste. I haven't given their suspension an appropriate trial either - just smoother roads around the dealer. If getting to work on time or traveling long distances reliably were on the top of my list I'd go Japanese with liquid cooling and avoid the highest performance engines - exactly what you're doing.

Never had this issue and I live in Australia and ride in some hot weather also, strange. Would be curious to the problem thou ? If its heat related or a bike issue you just have. Side note Your pretty trusting with the lane splitting , wouldn't try that here .... people change lanes quickly, mostly turn and indicate after. sometimes intentional done that way because they hate seeing you get in front..
@MinnerQ

My comments about the bike overheating are pure speculation. For all I know I could have hit the fuel switch. I have had the bike refuse to start after it's heated up in the past. I give it a few minutes and it starts without a problem. Do you have the 110? I know they may run hotter. Your splitting point is well taken. If I were advise someone on how to split most safely I'd tell them not to exceed a 10 mph speed difference and avoid splitting when there are gaps big enough for cars to change lanes.

Read about doing "breeze outs" after a few u-turns...run in second around parking lot staying off brakes and clutch...mainly to cool rear brakes but I suppose the clutch plates as well. Found this out after I found out my brake fluid on newly purchased used Deluxe was shit when pedal bottomed out suddenly. Motorman recommends a specific clutch and rear brake pad...the pads evidently dont muck up whitewalls which is a plus.

Are you sure you didn't get water in your injectors? I ask because I can see watermarks on your air cleaner cover (haha). I have to take my hat off to you, Minner. I would be quite a bit less calm if my engine shut-off at 90. I've read your other comments about the kill switch being the possible culprit and it makes me wonder again why manufacturers still have that feature on modern motorcycles. Who hasn't hit that switch in an inopportune time? Also, let's be honest, someone driving their house on the freeway in La-La land is not really the freakiest thing you'll see there. Ride safe, buddy ;-)

It'l like having a great t-shirt and jeans and also having a suit in the closet. They're used for completely different things. The BMW has power and cornering abilities that no cruiser could compete with. it's much more fun in the canyons and track days are great. That said, I ride the Harley more because it's more suitable for day to day rides.
