Micah, welcome to fly fish Crowley South. Last time, I fly fished at this local lake was 2018 and I had a blast. I like your vibe in fly fishing, glad to see another hooked-up convert.

Don't you ever worry about encountering bears or what not? I have seen you go to some real lonely places before, or at least so it seemed

I am not concerned about the bears in California. We only have black bears (even if they’re brown in color…those are called cinnamon black bears!), and black bears are very, very rarely aggressive towards humans. Think of them like big, curious dogs. But most of the time, they’re very shy. I still carry bear spray with me in case one gets too curious in search for our food, and then all you have to do is safely spray them and they’re gone. I say “safely” because the number 1 thing forest rangers will tell you before pulling the trigger on your spray, is to make sure the wind isn’t blowing in your face. Having the spray blown back at you won’t be a pleasant experience. But I always like to remind people that we are essentially at the top of the food chain when it comes to black bears. They are NOT Brown bears (Grizzly bears), which are a totally different story and are usually what people think of when they think of a bear.

@@UntilJourneysEnd I have seen bears attacking people though in videos. What scares me much more are mountain lions. I never know if you really are by yourself in those videos or just portray it like that on camera. I always get kind of nervous when I hike by myself in the wilderness and I'm not even sure if guns are allowed. On another note, I have never understood catch and release. I heard most fish die anyway right after you release them. There are many people who only do catch and release and won't even keep the fish.

The videos you see are the 1 in 1,000,000 chance that an attack happens. I catch myself watching videos like that too and thinking “oh boy…”. But the fact is, as long as you do your research on what to do if you encounter a bear or mountain lion, you will likely never have to use the knowledge you learned. But, it’s still good to know. The key to Mountain lions is to NEVER turn your back on them if you find yourself close to one. And never run away. Slowly back up and walk the way that you came. The key is to always act dominant in situations where you’re in close proximity to a lion (even a bear). They can sense fear. Just like any predatory animal. Bear spray is how you would defend yourself in a situation where a lion or bear keeps walking towards you. As far as a gun, you’ll have to dig into where you can carry, but I believe most national forests allow open carry. Again, all of this said, I have backpacked with people who have been going into the back country for over 30 years and they have NEVER had a sketchy encounter with an animal. It is very, very rare. Statistically, going for a drive in your car is more dangerous than going backpacking 😄

When do bloodworms usually start hatching? I just got a nice rainbow the other day on a San Juan Worm and I’m wondering if that may be the fly moving forward.

That’s a great question…all I know from personal experience (specifically in this lake), is that I have found blood worms in a trout’s stomach between the months of December-February. But I believe bloodworms can hatch year round…
