As a boat owner who repairs them, I see your hull is very thin on the bottom. This would be a interior lamination, not a exterior repair. Hull bottoms should be very thick layers of fiberglass. Not what I just saw here.

@StarChasersHere thanks for the info but many race hulls like mine are built lighter for less weight. The more I look at it, the more it seems like a previous repair, as there are two layers of glass not bonded together, its also dry inside, I have probed it with a moisture meter, so that's good. It's all on a chine too. It's being repaired professionally next weekend, so I will know more when we grind it back and get into it 🤞

@@fat_tommo_goes_boating When you look at the thickness of the fiberglass and see just a few layers, make the smart choices. Open her up and look. That long crack running down the chine says it all, I'm thin here.

It's the rollers on your trailer that are doing the damage! Years of rolling on and off the trailer on the same part of the Hull.
@fat_tommo_goes_boating

@stu-zw9bh possibly but doubtful because it's only been on this trailer about 2 years, maybe slightly less and I guess it has only been on and off it maybe 30 times

Bit of a disaster but could have been more of a disaster if you'd not seen the damage and launched her again. Good to get professional advice to take a look - can you get access inside? I'm no expert with fibreglass but it looks like a previous repair has been made there. Did you say you knew who had the boat between 'your' ownerships?
@fat_tommo_goes_boating
8 күн бұрын
Yes, I know who had it in between, but I don't believe he did anything because the hull still had remnants of the antifoul that I didn't remove the first time on it. I also am in contact with the previous 2 owners, so I can trace the boat back at least 13 years but it seems to be a surprise to everyone 😂

Hello Tommo. I am a boat builder since the early seventies, and what You are seeing is where the outer skin of the boat has broken through around an air bubble left from the construction process at the factory between the first laminate ( gel coat with a layer of mat and cloth over, and the second, where You see the Woven Roving, a heavier layer of mat with a heavier layer of heavier strand woven roving laminate. ) Lloyd's of London speck on fiberglass repair is recommended at a ratio of ten to one scarf for repair. In this case a filler would be adequate where the air pocket is, and the outer layer scarfed to Lloyd's spec. to properly scarf the mat and clothe repair back together. Best of luck with Your repair. The lamination process left some bubbles between the laminate. If the vessel is new and under warranty, it is definitely a factory issue.

@@mikenotpublicgoogleinfo2880 thanks for that comprehensive comment and opinion. The boat is 30 years old, it was the 1994 Southampton boat show boat, so not under warranty obviously. It's being professionally repaired next weekend, so look out for another video showing the repair process etc

@@fat_tommo_goes_boating What he said Tommo!! ☝☝☝. I was watching and had no idea what caused this. If an impact, surely you would have felt that. I was down to thinking someone hit you in a carpark until I saw the damage was underneath! Definitely a job for the experts so will be very interested to find out what it turns out to be and what repair they do.

@boat-adventures yes exactly, we had one or two heavy ish waves, but nothing unusual or to give a second thought to. It's a total mystery. I will probably know more next week when my mate Rich from Bespoke Marine has a look at it and we get into the repair. In the meantime, I can now clean all the hull up

@Daze_off2 I don't show my hole to just anybody mate 🤣 No I don't think the trailer caused it because I winch it on slowly by hand. I am wondering if the bits actually fell out on the road and that's why there was no water in the hull though

Good video Tommo. Like you say, those little pits look like they were starting to let in water to cause the delamination. I reckon the rollers then just finished it off . Oh, I've created my very first YT video too, let me know what you think!

I’m sure you’ll be back on the water in no time Tommo that looks like quite minor delaminating! It is heartbreaking though when there is good weather on the way. I missed most of last summer as I was rebuilding my blown up outboard and I’ve missed the past 2 months this summer because of cracks in my bulkheads and just generally strengthening the entire hull, fitting it out with stringers etc…. I’m really hoping summer 2025 is my year 😂 good luck mate 👍🏼

@fat_tommo_goes_boating I read once that bunks are better than rollers for older boats as they support the hull over a wider area,it might be worth considering especially if there are signs of stress anywhere else near the rollers.
@fat_tommo_goes_boating
9 күн бұрын
@dermotleonard259 Yes, bunks do spread the load better than rollers, that's why trailers like mine have so many rollers. I have no concerns about the trailer though.
