I play the way I do today because they played the way they do back then. I owe a career's worth of gratitude to the creative power and momentum of this band and what they gave a 16 year old kid in New England in the 1980s. Nice video upgrade, great capture. Thank YOU for this posting. ~ Joe

I guess sometimes algorithms can be a good things because this was the first clip in my KZitem feed when I opened it. Been a fan of FW since I saw the video for Silent Cries on Headbangers Ball way back in the day. This is the first time I’ve seen Ray do so much of the John Arch material. What a difficult task to sing songs sung in a completely unique way but of course, Ray is one of the few who could pull it off. I’m hoping they have one more tour in them before they hang it up. One of my all time favorite bands.

Ray Alder tried, but just not the same on John Arch original songs.

Agreed. Arch is too unique in tone and phrasing, and lyrically. His Best work was Awaken, obviously. I still prefer Alder. His emotive, melodic coloring phrases are pure gold. They should have not had him do the old material, but you know how the fans are. They want to hear it. The 3/4 records Ray did with Redemption are top notch prog metal. The Fullness of Time-Snowfall On Judgment Day. Production and writing on the 4th are not good. And then Arch shows up like 30 years later and sounds better than 1986. I have both Arch/Matheos records. Great stuff. I'm really surprised how overlooked Mark Zonder is though. Incredible. Terry Brown, their producer on several records, and the guy that produced almost all the Rush albums, said he never met any drummer with that precise of timing. And he worked with Neil Peart on tons of songs and records. All the great works. Wow. I will listen to anything that Jim, Ray, or Frank Aresti put out.

maybe cuz Ray and John have totally different color of voice...... Ray can pull off some songs...... but "Apparition" is a signature track for Arch...... not sure if anyone can sing it like he can.....
@carlsimons6616

John had a true tenor voice. Ray is a baritone, with a strong head voice. The Apparition is where it is most apparent. That's why Ray had to go for grunts and screams in the mid-range parts.

Ray sings his own songs well but fails pretty bad when he tries to sing John Arch era material. Keep in mind that by 1989 his voice had declined slightly

@@carlsimons6616 I think Alder had lost some range by this time. It's possible to close off that gap between chest and head voice where Ray is struggling on the apparition, even if you're a baritone, you can use mixed voice etc etc there are techniques and exercises where you can connect the two. That's how some of these singers can do the siren from low to high without a break in their voices. Check out Ken Templin, he talks about it. He's a vocalist who's like 60 and can sing in any key, ultra high pitch, mid range , and anywhere inbetween, he's a low Baritone. Ray may not have been trained much, or he had already damaged his voice here. He's clearly straining his voice here, just singing his lungs out.
