Risk factors: obesity, DM, CVD
NAFLD
20 percent of the world’s population.
Approximately 25 percent in the US, most having Type 2 Diabetes.
**Fructose does not stimulate leptin (hormone produced by adipocytes)-influencing appetite and satiety.
**High consumption of fructose drives leptin resistance driving obesity, DM, CVD.
**Just a week of high fructose consumption drives production of lipids and lipid deposition in the liver.
Most are asymptomatic, possibly slight jaundice, vague fatigue, dull achy discomfort RUQ
TESTING:
Blood tests
Elevated ALT, GGTP, AST, Triglycerides and decrease in HDL.
Fasting blood sugar and HbA1C
Ferritin and serum iron.
Screen for Hepatitis C
Imaging
Fibroscan-Ultrasound
Approximate cost range $69-$250.
MRI-abdomen.
