Your channel has been so important for me this year. I have migraines and autism trying to balance them with my degree, and life in general has been a great challenge. Seeing someone else deal with it in a great way while recognising the pain and not just saying you have to deal with it is everything that I needed. Thanks for being you. On a side note book of the year for me is the offing it made it reminded me that the area I'm from can be great, not painful.

I first heard of Fern Brady on Taskmaster. If you haven't watched her season (14) yet, or Taskmaster in general, you're missing out. I feel like there would be a lot of crossover between this comment section and people who would enjoy Taskmaster because it's just a silly little show and Fern is one of my favorite contestants

I've been reading the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells during the last quarter of the year and I just have to say I love them so much. They are simply written and short, but the thing I love about them is that Murderbot feels so autistic-coded and it feels like reading about someone like me for the first time. I just adore them.

I took a break from spending time on KZitem when life got too overwhelming and am just now watching all your latest videos. When you started talking about a poetry collection being in your top 5, I started saying to my self out loud „it’s Mary Oliver, she is a Mary Oliver Girlie, I can smell it all the way from Germany to Belgian that she is“ And damn I was right. Thank you for this lovely video❤. So many books I want to read now. I especially want to get my hands on „Forget me not“ immediately. :)

Thank you so much for this video! My tbr list has just gotten so much longer and I'm excited 😆 My top three this year were: 1. Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart - heartbreaking and difficult, but the most beautiful parent-child love story I've ever read 2. A League of Extraordinary Women series by Evie Dunmore - peak feminist historical romance 3. The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry - a gothic monster rumor & superstition plot coupled with healing from an abusive relationship, claiming one's agency, and a beautiful, soulmate-level friendship And the rest were inspired by your recommendations and the Pocket Pages book club! Thank you for being so fantastic, 2023 wouldn't have been so full of great reads without you! ❤

I really had a great time hearing you talk about and quote from the books that you read this year and thoroughly enjoyed! I liked your word choice (like "marinate," it made me think about steak) and use of imagery (especially how you shared that anecdote about escaping in a hospital waiting room through Garlic's graphic novels), and I am in turn inclined to look into your book selections even more. I, too, really adore Mary Oliver's poetry and Wild Geese is my favorite poem of hers as well. We actually discussed that particular poem on our channel. I definitely want to read more, though. Forget Me Not looks like a very heartbreaking piece and out of anything, Alzheimer's and Dementia scare and sadden me more and more, because where many conditions eat away at one's physical being, these aforementioned conditions eat away at one's physical AND mental being, and those that have it become drastically different in a way that is not like them, but yet we know that they are still the same people we know, love, and care about. I am on the Autistic spectrum as well and so I am interested in looking into A Kind of Spark and Strong Female Character. It has been amazing to see the number of people in the Booktube community who are on the autistic spectrum and we have quite a few (as well as other neurodivergent folks) that are on our channel. Have you read Good Different? That is a book that is on my nightstand and centers around an autistic character. It is told in verse like an Ellen Hopkins book. I am very curious to see what direction The Myth of Normal takes in its presentation and research. I will leave a link to my video where I name my ten favorite books that I read this year: kzitem.info/news/bejne/ln-GzJmaoKVzjKQ Thank you for sharing! -Josh

Happy new yeaaar! I read Bandit Queens because of you and it it definitely in my top 5 of the year! My favorite book of the year is Build your house around my body by Violet Kupersmith, it's a story about revenge, women's sense of self and identity set in basically two different time periods in Vietnam and has a bit of horror elements based on vietnamese folklore. I super recommend! Ps.: thank you so much for talking about your health issues. It was because of you I could explain and put a name for something I've been suffering for the past 10 years: I have migraines with visual auras! Now that I can explain it better to doctors, I may be able to start to getting a more appropriate treatment ♥️

the way that the music cut out around 20:25 was so impactful. it's such a difference from the typical mood created by the constant cozy soundtrack, so it really grabbed my attention and got me leaning in to pay attention to what the book was gonna be. then to jump right into the poetry? when i was already so riveted and invested? don't mind me, just crying at my day job, it's fine i'm fine this is actually better than fine this is great 🥲

Oooof the rage re: autistic meltdowns. So fckin relatable. I didn’t know I was autistic until very recently and I really wish ANY adult would’ve helped me through my meltdowns where I threw things at people and yelled rather than just telling me repeatedly I was a bad kid or had anger problems. Now I internalize that and judge my feelings and tell myself I’m wrong or shouldn’t feel how I do rather than just accepting that that’s how I feel and learning how to cope from there 🥲 ANYWAY. The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai was one of my faves of the year, I literally lost sleep over the characters and whether or not they’d be okay. The writing is very show not tell so I feel like you’d be into it!! Happy new year Ally!! ❤

I read 3 novels this year, and a few graphic novels too. This doesn't sound like much, but I hadn't finished a (text-only) book for 8 years. I was a voracious reader as a kid and missed it so much, but had come to the conclusion that after years of mental ill health, I just couldn't focus enough to transport myself anymore. There are no words to describe how glad I am to have been wrong. Ally, I can't thank you enough for helping me to rediscover this quiet, healing joy. Reading has brought me peace and comfort during some of the most difficult months of my life. My favourite book of 2023 was the Tea Dragon Society, and my partner got me the box set for Christmas. As a fellow late diagnosed autistic woman and a big Fern Brady fan, I am super excited to read her book this year too. A huge thank you for keeping me company this year. I wish you a wonderful year ahead 💞

THANK YOU FOR EXISTING, ALLY!!! this corner of the internet is the one i’ve been constantly coming back to for over a year (maybe even two years?) now. thank you for being so gentle, we never value gentleness but every day it becomes more important (well, to me at least). while watching this video i thought of a recommendation that is not a recent read for me. i’ve read it almost a decade ago, actually, but it stuck so much with me that i still think about it at least once a week. it’s amanda palmer’s ‘the art of asking’. even though the title makes it sound like self-help, it’s her memoir. it’s about making art, making money with art, not making money with art, and most of all, it’s about the power of community. palmer is so raw and weird in the best sense of the word and i think you’ll relate a lot with what she has to say. and it’s not just me who feels so passionately about it! after reading it for the first time, i recommend it to one of my best friends and, to this day, she always has an extra copy of it in her bookshelf to gift to her women friends who might need it in their lives.

My favorite of the year was the Anthropocene Reviewed. I loved it so much. The Library at Mount Char was runner-up. It's a dark contemporary fantasy, so not sure you'd love it, but it was one of the weirdest things I've ever read, which to me, is praise. Also loved my annual reread of Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders. It's hilarious and moving and tackles big themes like grief and purpose and the things and people that make life worth living. It's my all time favorite book and i BIG recommend if you haven't read. Thanks for all the lovely, helpful, and healing content this year. Happy new year!

If you haven't read Shark Heart (speculative fiction, very grief-focused) or Once There Were Wolves (environmental fiction, check trigger warnings if you have some that will make you not read a book) - both were some of my favorites this year and both made me sob. Cosmoknights volumes 1 & 2 (space opera & queer!) were my favorite graphic novels this year, as was the Hooky series (middle grade, but with some mature themes). Some other random recs: The Past is Red (environmental...fantasy? Dystopian?) & Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries (really great descriptions of setting, and a cozy-feeling romance featuring an autistic-coded main character)

A favorite read of mine this year was The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai. It is a dual timeline featuring a raw look at how the AIDs epidemic hit boys town in 1985 Chicago. Then it jumps to 2015 Paris where a mother is attempting to retrieve her daughter from a maybe cult. Very very good. My uncle died from AIDs in ‘87 and I’ve thought about him my whole life even though I never met him so this book tore me up but it also found a way to put a little piece back in. I also want to say a big ol’ thank you for sharing your life on this here corner of the internet! I also am not a huge poetry reader, but this past year I picked up God Mornings, Tiger Nights by Nuha Fariha and loved it! I think you would really like it, based on some of the themes you seem to gravitate towards, like experiences being between two cultures/countries, examining the roles placed on women, and making space for one’s self in the world. It’s indie pub and I haven’t seen any people talking abt it, but it’s so good-the writing was filled with such emotion- and I hope it gets some recognition this year!

Many of my favorites from this year were from your recommendations! (Notes on an execution, legends and lattes, a man called ove, to name a few!), but of my favourites I don't think you've read yet I can offer a couple fantastic indigenous titles popular in Canada - Bad Cree by Jessica Johns is a (light?) horror based around the indigenous legends of dream demons but also has this incredible underlying love note to aunties and the women in the protags life. The second, Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice, is a short dystopian story about a community in remote, northern Canada as they are cut off entirely from the rest of the world one day and have to rely on themselves to make it through the coming winter. It's such a good take on dystopian/apocalypse stories and a sequel came out this year as well!

I recently read Dog Songs by Mary Oliver, and was thinking that you would love it as well, but it seems you've already discovered the joy of Mary Oliver! Some of my favourite books this year, aside from that, was Ponyboy by Eliot Duncan, Peaces by Helen Oyeyemi, and Feed Them Silence by Lee Mandelo

The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow was my 1st read of 2023 and is now a new all time fave!! It's historical fiction/fantasy, but the historical elements mixed with the sisterhood in there were what made my heart sing ❤(I paused this video on the 31st of december to end the year with one of your video, and start the next with one too !! 🤠)

I think there’s a book you might like called “abuela, don’t forget me” by Rex Ogle. It’s a poetry memoir about his relationship with his grandma who has Alzheimer’s. 5/5 stars! Happy new year!!

Some of my fav 2023 books that I think you and the community would enjoy are: 1. Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds & Shape Our Futures by Merlin Sheldrake. This was my fav book of 2023. Pssst, he mentions Braiding Sweetgrass. 2. For Small Creatures Such as We: Rituals for Finding Meaning in Our Unlikely World by Sasha Sagan. Appreciate the world and make rituals with meaning in a secular way. Thank you for cultivating a wholesome cozy space here. I've enjoyed watching many of your videos over the past few months!

This year I read less than I wanted to... Sadly, my favorite reads haven't been translated from Finnish to English, but the one I can recommend is "The Wisdom of Tea" by Noriko Morishita. Such a sweet autobiographical story about the author doing her best to learn about tea ceremonies over the course of 25 years. It truly captures the frustrations and little breakthroughs that come with learning something complicated. My personal favorite aspect of it was the focus on sensory experiences during tea ceremonies - in that sense it reminded me a bit of "The Way Through the Woods: Of Mushrooms and Mourning" by Long Litt Woon which was my favorite read in 2022 and another book I highly recommend. Thank you for another year of lovely videos and book recs

Hi Ally! We have a lot of overlapping favorites (the Garlic graphic novels, A Kind Of Spark, Frog and Toad, the Robot and Monk Duology, etc.) but as for books you haven't mentioned, my favorites of this year have been Dreams Lie Beneath by Rebecca Ross, G'Morning, G'Night by Lin Manuel Miranda, Taproot by Keezy Young, and Malice by Heather Walter. Thanks for all the videos this year, hope you're doing well 🩵 Happy New Year! 🎉

okay you NEED to read All This Could Be Different by Sarah Thankam Mathews! My fave book I read this year (it came out in 2022). My Storygraph review: "This book is so good, so well written, so queer, so precise, I am convinced every character is a real person. So much nuance about mid-20s uncertainties, living between two worlds, trusting a system that won’t love you back. 10/10." Thank you for your recs! I have so many new TBRs. I felt very called out in the best way at the end, I've never read a full Mary Oliver book but I love her / The Anthropocene Reviewed / Braiding Sweetgrass. That connection just pushed it to the top of my TBR.

Ali (Ally? Allie? Forgive me for not knowing!), I’m a new subscriber this year and you made my year leaps and bounds better than it would have been without your videos. Because you asked - my fav books of the year, in no specific order: Know My Name by Chanel Miller (maybe my fav nonfiction ever), The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa, the Mono and Robot series by Becky Chambers, Sea of Tranquility of Emily St John Mandel, and also Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy
