I believe that one reason that this show is so entertaining to watch is because of the genuine friendship between the main actors and recurring guest stars. Rather it be the small, sly smile from Amanda Blake, James Arness turning his head and looking away so he wouldn't ruin the scene or Ken Curtis rubbing his mouth with his hand, these are all signs that the actors were getting tickled by their coworkers' performance. To me, this is a definite sign of genuine friendship because I only act that way around people that I like and feel comfortable being around. In my opinion, as much as I liked Wanted Dead or Alive, Have Gun Will Travel, Restless Gun and Maverick, Gunsmoke was the best western ever made.

Jim Olson , Yes because they were great actors and performers ! Most guys like Chuck Conors were real cowboys . Had their Iives been Ranchers or farmers sons ! Then they them selves . Became Ranchers and Farmer Also Laramie's actors were also raised Ranchers sons ! And became Ranchers horse Ranchers both! John Smith and John Ford great actors realistic ! Done own riding and fightit was also on for many years Sean's! They had many love Sean's during the long history .Of the True stories about. Laramie's Western days in history ! And the family in the stories ! James Arness was discovered by John Wayne . He begged James to do this western They were both life long friends ! First pick was John Wayne. The Twitter and director made it for John Wayne . But he thought he was getting to old to do a series show! Too mutch time. Would be consumed . He wanted to slow down spend less time in f films . More with his family ! So he asked his best buddy James Arness John knew he could Handel the part Because he was so mutch like John Wayne .Than any one in Hoywood! Whitch John Wayne never liked any way! So James jumped at the Chance. John Wayne Was a special guest on Johnny Carson Show. Plugging the net western movie he Stared in ! Was talking about James Arness. Telling about why James Arness refused to play areal love Sean . With his good friend Miss.Amanda Blake plays Kitty in Gun Smoke on T.V.So John Wayne had it written out of the scripts! The Story bel onged to John Wayne anyways.! He is the writter! Look it up ! James Arness refused to kiss other women!. In movie because he bieved ! It would hurt his wife ! Because it would be hard for him ! If she kissed other men ! No matter why she did it! So look it up you will See ! Hollywood tells it different ! Because it sounded a little crazy! For actors to think like that ! But James Arness was very different than many men ! Money wasn't a concern! His Wife meant more to him! Than beeing big and famous did! He is a great man in deed! His wife most lucky indeed!.🥀💕🤗🐎🐎🐂🐺⭐️

Yes it was, almost canceled in the 1967 / 68 season, the wife of the president of CBS was the guiding light of why it was renewed. The network couldn't decide rather to keep Gunsmoke as the show was declined in the ratings or renew Gilligans Island for a 4th season, as their rating were going up, and cast have been reviewing new fourth season scripts written, and were told it was being renewed. But in the end Gunsmoke was renewed and revitalized in the ratings for 6th more years.

These television shows are duplicated almost exactly from the original stories that initially aired on radio starring William Conrad, Georgia Ellis, Howard McNear and Parley Baer. John Mestin was the creator and primary writer for both the radio and television programs of "Gunsmoke". Few people realize William Conrad and John Mestin were the original and first individuals to create the "Gunsmoke" program, first on radio and later on television. William Conrad will for me always be the original Marshall Matt Dillon. William Conrad named Chester, Doc Adams and directed the first television programs of "Gunsmoke".

Wondering how many times Matt took Miss Kitty "fishing" at least once on episode Matt gets it, they talk about it near the beginning of the show

Every Morning I watch the old pre-color Gunsmokes on INSP when the original writers wrote most episodes or re-wrote their episodes they wrote for the radio Shows. So many are worth watching over & over because the Guest Actors were always like the cast, Top Notch ..Then when I can't find anything worth Watching in the Afternoon against my better judgement I give TV-Land another viewer to watch the latter colorized versions & back to INSP for late afternoon & evening Gunsmokes...

Miss Kitty was the full package. One of the most alluring females on a Western. Lucky Matt.

Yeah as though when Matt looked at Kitty, he was really looking at her hat. When they shot that scene, he was probably trying to visualize her with nothing on but that hat.

In real life it might have been better if Matt and Kitty got married but for the show's sake I think it would have taken the hard edge off a tough guy Matt making him into a family man.

Lance2773 You’re probably right. Toxic masculinity was rampant in westerns. Notice how often the one female lead was used as a plot device to cause angst for Matt? Kitty, written as a fiercely independent, take charge woman, was reduced to having to be rescued by the big strong lawman far too often.

There are implications that Matt and Kitty were serious . He was constantly asking her to go upstairs to her room, they had talked about marriage and he received several interests from women but turned them down. A man like that doesn’t turn women away. I Think Kitty was mean to him with her temper and he was good to her. If anyone hasn’t already go to the blooper and outtakes. I learned a lot about both of them on and off the screen. There’s one where doc jumps out at Matt and he makes the funniest reaction. And there’s 2 scenes where their in bed together.

Miss Kitty had that attitude going on ! A woman of true independent spirit, a Southerner, & she owned her own business. I can't believe she kept thinking slow poke Marshall Matt was going to POP THE QUESTION. He was soooooo dull. I am mystified that there was absolutely no other men around at anytime to attract Miss Kitty's notice. She should have moved to Laramie & got acquainted with Jess Harper & Slim Sherman. She would definitely have been going in the RIGHT DIRECTION with that decision!!!++++++🤠
