I don't know if you're a Doctor Who person but the episode "Smile" does a really excellent variation on the 'villainous AI' trope. I just love the way that 'optimizing' for one thing and forgetting the obvious when it comes to machines can have these wide-ranging, disastrous consequences. It also doesn't resolve quite the way I'd expected!

Your comparison of the Elantris villain to Frollo has made me want to pick up Elantris ASAP. Eli is also one of my favourite villains ever. The chandrian from the Name of the Wind really intrigued me though we don't know much about them. I know you don't like the Shades of Magic series but Holland is my son though he's more of an antihero.

YES to a least favourite villain video, and I would also love to see a video on your favourite non-bookish villans (so tv/film/etc)! This video made me realize that I don't read a ton of books that have a very clear villain, and if they do, they're not notable, except for some of the ones you mentioned. When it comes to TV and film though, I have a lot more strong feelings, I LOVE/DESPISE Frollo from Hunchback of the Notre Dame, for exactly the reason you said. He's just so terrifyingly believable for a Disney movie. Also, every villain/anti-villain from Avatar The Last Airbender are my favourite. They're just all so complex and despicable but understandable and believable and all their arcs resolve in extremely satisfying ways IT'S SO GOOD. Also Faith and the Mayor from Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Iconic. Another really random one that's just popping into my head is the podcast Dungeons and Daddies (it's delightful: a D&D-podcast about four dads from 'our' world that get transported to the Forgotten Realms for some reason and have to go find their sons. It's light on the D&D and heavy on the comedy and it's just excellent), the identity of the Big Bad in that show was recently revealed and it's both hilarious and ACTUALLY TERRIFYING. I love it a lot.

I would really enjoy a least favourites villains. Also maybe a tv show/ movie villains? I’d love to see your fave buffy villains. The priest in the bear and the nightingale got me too, like I was yelling at the book I was so mad, he gave me Judge frollo vibes too. Though I would not recommend reading the hunchback of Notre Dame, Hugo waffles.

I feel like it's not a villains list if it doesn't include The Darkling. Never got the hype for him but can't deny that he's a good villain. (also can't wait to see what Ben Barnes brings to the role.)

So many of these would make my list too! I also think Konstantin from Winternight and 'Ruin' from Mistborn would have been on my list. Konstantin is a lot like Hrathen and Frollo for me. Honestly, if he wasn't so awful, I could have totally shipped him with Vasya. I loved that Ruin is both insidious and undermining, but like the Bear, he's necessary to the balance of the world.

I’m waiting for our winter to read the next two books in the Winternight trilogy, the atmosphere is so on point👌 As a writer it’s so important to me to create a great villain! The best villain/MC tension I've ever seen is in this super corny Australian kids show called Wicked Science. It's about two kids who accidentally become super geniuses and one of them wants to use their powers for evil while the other tries to stop them. The sexual tension between them was incredible and really confused me when I was younger haha!

Leck from the Graceling series!!! Glad to hear him getting recognized as one of the scariest mf-ers in YA. Sam, thanks a lot for letting me know that one of the MCs in Vicious is a religious fanatic! I was intrigued by that series and was thinking about reading it, but fanatic priests (and fanatic chars in general) are one of my most disliked types of characters. And knowing that Vicious has one MC that is similar to the priest POV guy in Elantris, which I could barely stand, makes my choice on whether shall I read that series a lot easier 😊 I personally prefer super charismatic villains(or antiheroes), especially the really intelligent and chaotic ones, which see world clearer than the protagonists and then crush the hypocrisies of the MCs, all the while laughing maniacally in their faces. My favorite examples would be Donquixote Doflamingo from One Piece and Izaya Orihara from Durarara 💖
