FC Basel, aka RotBlau from the Swiss Super League for the UEFA Europa Conference League qualification rounds against a Kazakhstan Premier League team, FC Tobol Kostanay. We wanted to see Finn van Breemen, from our club ADO Den Haag here in The Hague in his first match for Basel and to check out the atmosphere of the city and stadium.
The St. Jakob-Park stadium looks a bit strange from the outside, but once inside you see right away that this is a top-class stadium! It seats 37,000 fans and has great accommodations. We sat on the first row and could literally touch the grass. Very open, friendly and still safe. The main supporters group, the Ultras sits behind the goal in section D where the players come on and off the pitch. They put on a great show, singing and chanting pretty much from start to stop of the match.
This match started well for FC Basel. You saw that the RotBlau had everything under control. They had a few good changes and FC Tobol not much. Basel scored from a shot outside the 16 and the fans went crazy. The problem was, and you felt that coming on, that the FC Basel attackers needed to make a goal or two more, but they just didn’t. Wouter Burger, a fan favourite also from The Netherlands fell off injured in this first half as well. Finn played a fine first half and had some great crossings!
The second half was a drama. A red card in the 16 for a penalty. Penalty SAVED! Literally minutes later another penalty was given and it was 1-1. If that was not bad enough, Riccardo Calafiori, one of my favourite players of their squad picked up a dubious second yellow card in a header duel. He headed the ball away and then made contact with the FC Tobol player, so that is now two players sent off! So it ended 1-3 for FC Tobol, yet still the FC Basel Ultras kept singing and cheering on the RotBlau. Great to see, for they deserved more. Dan Ndoye was playing well and was super fast and creative along the flanks.

This is a football team and stadium I would definitely say is worth visiting again. As Dutch, there are now two players in the starting line-up, Van Breemen and Burger and the atmosphere in and around the stadium is great. After the match, the streets are all closed off and you walk up the hill a bit and there are the taxis, or right in front of the stadium are the trams. Don’t forget to visit Basel center, as that has some lovely views along the Rhein River and climb the church tower for some great landscapes from up there!
FC Basel vs FCB - FC Tobol Kostanay, the atmosphere in the St. Jakob-Park stadium, enjoy!
