I don't know why Francis Barber wasn't cast, her facial and vocal similarities to Fanny are much greater and I think it would have given this drama better depth. Julia Davis really doesn't work in this for me.

You're absolutely right! I fell down a Fanny Cradock rabbit hole today (as one does) and was struck at the physical and auditory resemblance between Cradock and Barber.

I agree with you. After watching it I looked up Fanny on you tube and I was really surprised because she sounds very different from the way Julia Davis does her - not as upper class in my opinion. But all the same I must say I was mesmorised by Julia Davis in this programme.

Julia Davies isn't scary enough to play fanny, too gorgeous as well.

She played the part amazingly....but honestly she was too young by about 20-25 years (I think she was 39-40 at the time) to play Fanny, especially during the era depicted in the film.

Meh. I'm not saying that she isn't a good actress, but she is horribly miscast. The real Fanny sounded like the Marlboro Man and looked like a drag queen. A truly powerful, domineering woman that just does not come across here.

I’d agree tbh. Julia is too pretty as Fanny genuinely looked terrifying, especially during the 70s. Deliberately so I imagine so as to appear dominant, immediately grabbing the limelight when she walked in.

Julia Davis is miscast here. Shame because she’s an excellent actress but doesn’t bear much resemblance to the dragon she’s portraying.

Julia Davis is a great comic actress but she's miscast here. She's just too soft and feminine. And unforgivably, she hasn't even got the voice right, which was really crucial to the role. She's too high-pitched, without any of Fanny's gin-soaked gravel, and too damned POSH. Fanny wasn't upper class - her poshness was put on. I think perhaps Julia Davis mistakenly believes she was aristocratic! Fanny was TERRIFYING and typical of a type of woman that flourished after the war. The Great British Battleaxe. These women dominated every situation they walked into and no one ever said NO to them. Dame Barbara Cartland was another one - i met her once, she was in her nineties, nearly blind and deaf but still fearsome! Fanny is ripe for a proper, one hour documentary, it's high time one was made while those who knew her well (eg her sons and staff life Peter her child slave/chef) are still alive to contribute.

Freddie Starr did a better job of her when he parodied her and threw eggs into the orchestra pit..
