Divine Smite isn't a bonus action, and the smite spells are generally not very good because there are better spells to concentrate on, so I wouldn't discount paladin. I'd probably still go fighter though. In the second campaign I ran, only one of my players knew the system, so he built a character that would have consistently high damage. He went variant human, zealot barbarian, getting PAM at level 1 and GWM at level 4. It was one of the highest DPR builds at the time.

I would have done a mage then at level 4 take the war caster feat. Because pole arm master Grants you and opportunity attack when someone enter your range and works with a quarterstaff. Warcaster let's you use a spell as an opportunity attack so you could combine that with someone entering your range and casting inflict wounds or something. Polearm master says " While you are wielding a glaive, halberd, pike, QUARTERSTAFF, or spear, other creatures provoke an opportunity attack from you when they enter the reach you have with that weapon" NOT that the opportunity attacks must be with that weapon and warcaster says "When a hostile creature's movement provokes an opportunity attack from you, you can use your reaction to cast a spell at the creature, rather than making an opportunity attack. The spell must have a casting time of 1 action and must target only that creature" and with a caster a levelled spell is always going to be better then a weapon attack.

I honestly think feats like Telekinetic, Telepathic, Fey Touched, Shadow Touched or Observant are incredibly evocative and inspiring. So is the aptly named Inspiring Leader. You could easily build a character based around that one feat. Of course, nothing evokes the idea of a massive minotaur barbarian more than the Crusher feat. At least to me!

I actually do have a character concept based on Inspiring Leader. Multiclass Crown or Glory Paladin and Eloquence Bard, focus on buffing allies by means of rousing speeches and a commanding battlefield presence. (I'm a little wary of playing it myself as it's clearly a recipe for main character syndrome and I wouldn't enjoy that.)

I've had fun with it. My telekinetic character was a divine soul sorcerer with the telekinetic feature leaning into the fact that their body was breaking down from the power within them. When she was angry I ended up using telekinetic as a feature for things to randomly get knocked about. I had a telepathic paladin that never wanted to use it to dig into people's minds and largely used it in an oddly respectful way for a telepath, etc

So I have a house rule for my games been doing for years and so far it’s been great results with other DMs using it as well. If a player submits a backstory, they get to start with a feat for free (must meet prerequisites if there are any). I think it promotes role play and incentivizes immersion for players

My Ranger was built around a feat, in this case Alert. She was a royal, and she and her mother evaded an assassination attempt when she was a child. They fled to a remote village, where she was trained by the huntmaster to defend herself. Because of the trauma though, she has a deep paranoia and is always on guard, thus the alert feat.

Kind of similar to this, I've recently been using a method where I roll for 2 or 3 random skills and then make a character around that. I've made an ex-cop private detective oathbreaker paladin who's willing to use less than legal methods to solve a case from Investigation and Intimidation, and a gravedigger warlock who works for a necromancer from Medicine and Stealth. It's a really fun method to use if you find yourself making characters that all share the same skills.
I'm 13 seconds in, and I completely 100% agree. Homophones ARE fun!

I’ve built a character around a feat; I play a mage-slaying orc barbarian because I think the mage slayer feat is cool. I couldn’t get the feat until fourth level unfortunately, but I did play her and build her with the feat in mind since level 1. It was a cool place to build from! Her whole thing is hating magic, but in order to fight against those that abuse magic, she is actually very studied in it herself. Intelligent barbarians are fun, lol.

My first thought, when reading out the weapons available for Polearm Mastery was Little John from Robin Hood as I always picture him walking with his quarterstaff. And then I invariably thought of Little John from Men In Tights and their duel over the creek. "If we don't get no tolls, then we don't eat no rolls." I also was reminded that in an Era long past there was an alternate progression for Monks presented in Dragon Magazine I think to represent a more medieval European monk like that. I think it switched up their unarmed fighting a bit to put more emphasis on simple weapons and turned them into a bit of a skill monkey with healing specific abilities.

have you ever built a character around an end game for their character arc? For example, I was thinking of a soldier who's father had a suit of adamantine armor commissioned and enchanted by a reclusive Dwarven smith who had adventured with the PC's father. After a battle in which the PC's unit was decimated, he gets this letter from his father explaining the relationship and the armor commissioned. Now, having lost all his friends in that battle, this is basically his lifeline to avoid survivor's guilt. This gets him to take a leave of absence and go adventuring to find his father's friend. Edit: I initially started this character concept with the idea of a Gith'yanke soldier fighting in the underdark, when 1 in 10 of his unit developed psionic abilities and was released from service.

Ranger with PAM could take Druidic Warrior and have a Shillelagh build with a quarterstaff. Swarmkeeper would be a good subclass for that. Or you could make a strength-based Ranger using a glave or halberd.

Your comment about homophones prompted me to think of the definition for the word "feat". A feat is an accomplishment! This reminded me of Matt Colville's "Toward Better Rewards" video, and now I'm considering only granting feats in my games as quest rewards.

7:46 Considering the wording, I don't think anything is stopping the player from forgoing the 1d4 bonus action attack to use commander's strike. That allows to keep the more valuable attack from the main action. Unless of course I'm missing something.

Personally, I like starting them with a Feat so if they DO want to build towards something, they can start early, and if they want their ASI they can have it as well. Or double Feats! I think it's more fun is all.

I think, of all the Many Ways videos, this feels one of the more 5e specific. Even in other games that have something analogous to 5e feats, they're often class locked, ancestry locked, etc, meaning that a lot more 'comes' with a feat than just the feat, and it's a more specific form of building by class, ancestry, etc. (Though with PF2e there are some general ones, and I'm wondering if you attempted this for that game if you'd randomly pick a skill or general feat, if you'd specifically go for level 1 feats but otherwise be open, or randomly pick from every feat)

Love this! But also I just had an idea ... what if "I'd rather eat my armor than admit I'm wrong" turned into why they're a barbarian or monk? ... because rather than literally eating their armor when it turned out they were wrong (perhaps something to do with why they lost that battle), they instead forswore the armor? Idk, it doesn't quite go with the sentiment of the flaw, I know, but it could lead down an interesting path ... maybe towards more self-reflection and working towards humility as a monk? or doubling down and becoming even more stubborn and proud as a barbarian?

my tables PC creation have been start at lv3 if you plan to multiclass that class needs to be in the first 3(unless worked out for a future story beat with Dm) stat array of 17, 16, 15, 13, 11, 8 free feat unless a background gives you one and changing sharpshooter/GWM to instead of -5 bth +10 dmg to -attack stat to hit and +attack stat times 2 so at 16 dex its -3bth +6dmg oh and lastly always have a back up sheet dont need a whole backstory just the bare minimum to make a back up playable

Brief backstory - Major Argus Ward was a frontline commander of [fantasy country] in a shieldwall / phalanx unit. This why he trained so extensively with polearms. His phalanx was tasked in [war] with defending [chokepoint]. His unit was assigned to a sacrificial mission to hold [chokepoint] for other forces to complete objectives. His shieldwall unit held [chokepoint] longer than requested, but were eventually trampled under a chaotic cavalry push, leaving him as the only survivor. Despite completing his mission, his country was soon after sacked and dissolved. Now citizen of [evil empire], his circle of trust only extends about as far as the brave unit that stood with him. To him, to trust in larger things again, like a whole army, state or religion, is foolishness.

I do like this approach, and honestly I could see running a short campaign where everyone gets a free random feat and can then build the character around it. But, I do wanna add that you do seem to be falling into a mental trap regarding barbarians: you can use the class to its fullest potential wearing armor. Yes, this means that Unarmored Defense is a "dead" feature, but no other class feature has any restriction on light or medium armor. Only heavy armor affects you negatively.

@@jacobcrumpton4643 Which I've said in my comment. But medium armor is perfectly fine, and can easily result in a better AC than using Unarmored Defense (especially for multi-classing characters/characters that won't reach Level 20).

The two things that I personally feel have always been terrible about the design of D&D are the class-based character development system and the Vancian magic system. These systems irrationally limit the choices players can make in designing and developing their PCs, and TSR/WotC/Hasbro has missed so many opportunities to do away with these systems over the past 50 years. A few years ago, I finally developed a good Spell Points system to replace the spell slot system of D&D, but for some reason, it never struck me until the middle of last night that the way to fix the class system of D&D is Feats. By simply converting all class-based mechanics to Feats, D&D could finally be freed of these irrational limitations. I would have to rework my Spell Points system to fit a Feats-based D&D, but that's simply a matter of juggling a few numbers. With my SP system, there's no longer any "spell preparation" or "spell slots". The caster has a certain number of SP based on their caster level, and can cast any spell they know any number of times, provided their have SP remaining, and can, if they wish, exchange HP for SP, once they run out of SP, even unto death. Once a spell is learned, it is learned permanently, and is not "forgotten" after casting. Spells cost the square of their spell level plus the spell level (min of 1) to cast, so a 0th Level cantrip costs 1 SP, a 1st Level spell costs 2 SP, a 2nd Level spell costs 6 SP, and a 9th Level spell costs 90 SP to cast, thus naturally limiting the number of high level spells any PC is going to cast, and heavily biasing the caster toward casting low-level spells. SP (and HP) recovery happens on a time-based scale, so no full SP or HP recovery after a short rest or a long rest. A high-level caster who depletes all their SP may take weeks to fully restore their SP or HP.
