So glad you reviewed Nicholas Nickleby. Great early Dickens. Though it takes place (mostly) in dark London, it's got a great cheerful spirit, full of optimism and hope. I have read it several times, and it gets better every time. Mrs. Nickleby is a spitting image of Dickens's own mother. Hard Times is definitely work. I think his best are Bleak House and Little Dorrit.

Nicholas Nickleby is a great early Dickens indeed. I loved Little Dorrit when I read it, but I still have to get to Bleak House. I know that's another one that people love dearly. At the moment Little Dorrit and Our Mutual Friend are my favorites, but I'm not sure how much weight that holds since I've only only read five out of fifteen of his novels so far.

Hi Marissa I love Charles Dickens Books - When it comes to Reading Thick Books I read them on my Kindle Tablet. I buy the Kindle Version of the Book and read it on my Kindle. I really can’t concentrate when I am listening to a Audio Book. I just prefer reading the actual books. My County Library has Kate’s Book and I have it on my later to read shelf through my Account. Take Care & Happy Reading ❤️🤗🔰📚📖❤️

I've tried reading chunky books on my e-reader and find that it just takes forever. Idk if I read slower in ebook format or get more discouraged by a percentage than by tactical proof of my progress. Or maybe I'm just in an ebook slump lately and am overly disparaging of them at the moment. Who knows. I hope you were/are able to get ahold of Katie's book soon. Enjoy and happy reading! 📚❤️

Almost as soon as it dropped, I listen on Audible to Katie's novel, which I did like a lot. All I would add here is that she quite obviously spent time and energy devising an elegant ending. I cannot even guess which game first: the idea to bring together many disparate lines of inquiry, or perhaps the necessity to do so as the story became more and more complicated in the telling of it. Whichever it was, its successful completion was in a word: impressive. Also, her publisher went to the trouble of finding a terrific narrator. Thx, Marissa, enjoyed.

Oh I'm so glad you enjoyed it as well! I do know that Katie put a lot of thought into all of the details of the ending. If you enjoyed the audiobook narrator for the Secrets of Hartwood Hall you might like The Whalebone Theatre by Joanna Quinn as well. I believe Katie was telling me that it's the same narrator.

@@BlatantlyBookish Thank you. Obviously I do have an Audible subscription but unless it's a writer I like I'm unlikely to venture into a new genre. So far, I'm very happy with what I've found there.

I have read very few of Dickens books and am following Katie’s mega Dickens readalong at my own pace. Librivox has some excellent readers for Dickens and I listened to Nicholas Nickleby and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. However, I’m struggling with Oliver Twist. If it weren’t for Bill and Nancy I’d be tempted to bail but am determined to read all of Dickens novels.

Hopefully we'll get around to all of Dickens in our own time (though it sounds like you're sticking fairly close to Katie's reading schedule). I've actually never read Oliver Twist, but I've heard quite a lot about it that makes me wonder why it's so popular.

Completely agree regarding Paying Guests. While Fingersmith, Affinity and Velvet are 3 of my all time fav novels, I found Guests to be soo slow and a bit boring if I'm being completely honest. I finished Hartwood Hall earlier today and really enjoyed it! Victorian gothic is my favorite sub genre and The Secrets of Hartwood Hall was a great representation 👌

Whew, I'm glad it's not just me when it comes to The Paying Guests. Katie's book was delightful! I'm glad you enjoyed it as well. Victorian Gothic is such a fun genre. I feel like it's my reading comfort zone in many ways.

I also read Nicolas Nickleby in february. Its not my favorite Dickens either. I am working my way through them, but as of now Our Mutual Friend is my favorite. I am reading the Old Curiosity Shop now.

Yes! Our Mutual Friend is probably my favorite right now as well (of the ones I've read of course). You'll have to let me know what you think/thought of The Old Curiousity Shop. It's not one I've heard too much about.

I find that it surprising that you found Tipping the Velvet a better book than The Paying Guests. I enjoyed both Fingersmith and The Paying Guests, but I struggled to connect with Tipping the Velvet. Maybe I should give it another try. Maybe I just need to get further into it.

Tipping the Velvet was the second Sarah Waters book I read. I'm pretty sure I read it about 4 or 5 years ago at this point, but I remember connecting with it and enjoying it far more than The Paying Guests. I suppose it could be nostalgia and memory working their magic, but I encourage you to give it another try or keep going.

Unfortunately actual books have taken a back seat to comics for a bit now...but, you already knew that LOL. However, I am in the middle of a very interesting sci-fi trilogy called The Reckoners by Brandon Sanderson whom I adore. I am planning to get to the third and final book soon.

I always hate it when I'm expecting one kind of novel, but get another, it can be so hard to change head spaces... Where would you rank The Night Watch in your Sarah Waters reading?
@BlatantlyBookish
Жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly! I think The Night Watch would definitely be above the Paying Guests and either above or below Affinity depending on my mood (this is why I seldom make ranking videos lol). It felt really similar to The Paying Guests in a lot of ways for me, but with a more interesting narrative structure. And I had a profound connection with certain lines about the passage of time and shared cultural trauma that resonated with me with regards to Covid. That alone may make it stand out more than it otherwise would.

I definitely enjoyed nicholas nickleby more than you did but it isn’t as good as David copperfield. The paying guests is my least favourite Sarah waters book by far. I need to try the little stranger next

I can't wait for the right time to read David Copperfield. It hasn't happened yet. The Little Stranger will be bittersweet for me as my last Sarah Waters book.
