That part where you say you automatically hate something that’s popular because of how many people recommend it to you, I relate to that so so so much 😂 Took me 5 years to watch Hamilton because it was so popular back in the day that I just absolutely refused to believe that it was as good as everyone made out! Same with Dear Evan Hansen, Twilight, Addams Family, even Harry Potter!😅 and so Many other things 😅❤️ I think it is that thing where you don’t like being told how to feel about something! And that just because the whole world likes it doesn’t mean I will ahha! It’s so weird and stubborn and irrational and yet a habit I can’t break 😅😂 but don’t worry Carrie you’re totally not alone there ahha!! Love this video and will deffo have to check out these books when I get to the end of my current reading list 🙈😍❤️

To whoever is reading this: Hi! I don't know you and you don't know me but I know things are probably hard right now. Things are hard for me too but I just wanted to come onto Carrie's lovely video to tell you something that I don't hear enough. I know that you are trying, even if you are not getting anything done and I'm proud of you for trying. If you are watching this instead of doing school or work, I understand but when you are ready please try and do that work as best as you can!! It seems like a lot right now but you don't have to do everything, just as much as you can do without getting too overwhelmed! I hope you have a great day, and if not, tomorrow is a new day!! OMG yes to the part about reading vs watching tense situations. My taste in books and movies are totally different because of that. I watch pretty much exclusively comedies and rom coms, but my bf loves thrillers and I get sucked in sometimes. Luckily my boyfriend is very understanding of when I need to pause and walk around the house when watching something tense, embarrassing, or awkward haha

Came out a few years ago and won awards so you may well have read it, but 'An American Marriage' is brilliant, it's rare that I find a book where I genuinely really feel for the characters, it brought up really interesting ethical dilemmas, and was really easy to read (coming from a dyslexic!). I also really enjoyed 'if I die before I wake' by Emily Koch- all the perspective of someone in coma who is aware of his surroundings but unable to communicate and gradually works out that it was an attempted murder that put him in the coma

An interesting tidbit (possibly). Lorelei is a famous (I think German) mermaid/siren who was known to lure men to their deaths from her rock on the Rhine. There's some really great songs and poetry about it, including one by Gershwin which is a banger.

Back in January I read the first two books from the ‘Dorothy must die series’, because I remembered how addicted I had become to them two years ago when my mum picked them up in a charity shop. I reread them, and then remembered how annoyed I was that I didn’t have the final two books of the series😂🤦🏼♀️ I ordered them, and the 4th book came the next day, but the 3rd book only arrived on Saturday. Fair to say I read both of them that day, so I finally know the ending of the series!! I would absolutely recommend! It’s like a darker version of the wizard of oz, and there are so many amazing characters, my favourite being Nox. There’s like 10 prequels, but I’m not sure I have the time or energy to invest into them, especially since I’m not sure they have my favourite characters in them, but I might make that my mission for the year😂

On mermaids! Here in Russia, our mermaids are called “rusalkas” and they don’t have tails, they live in lakes, rivers and any body of drinkable water. They are just water spirits, nymphs, more like sirens (because they were thought to drown people) and they can be drowned girls, girls who died before getting married, girls who died during the rusalka week (or something like that) and many other circumstances - basically they are what young women were thought to turn into if they die, to the point that fathers would tie their daughters to a tree (as if they were married to a tree) so that they would not turn into a rusalka. Folklore is just fascinating and every nation has their own version and name for them (I once went down the Wikipedia rabbit hole, might write a book about it).

This video is so dangerous for my ever-growing TBR pile! I’d highly recommend the Binti Series, by Nnedi Okorafor, they’re novellas, so they’re quick to read, and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, by V. E. Schwab, I’m part way through it and it’s one of those books you can’t describe but Neil Gaiman called it “Enchanting” which is the perfect way to describe it.

I really liked the "Unwind" series by Neal Shusterman. It's a dystopian series set in the near future where a civil war breaks out between pro life and pro choice advocates... Basically a compromise is reached between the 2 groups that allows parents to sign an order for their children between the ages of 13 and 18 to be "unwound" - taken to "harvest camps" and operated on to be full body doners. The "logic" is that, since 99.44% of the body is used, unwinds aren't considered to be deceased because their individual body parts live on. The series opens some really interesting questions about the human soul and basic human morality in a sort of dark twisty way.
