In a wide-ranging online discussion with Jewish leaders across Australia facilitated by the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ), chaired by ECAJ president Jillian Segal and moderated by co-CEO Peter Wertheim, Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese has:
o condemned any boycott of Israeli products and services;
o pledged his opposition to any ALP motion supporting such a boycott;
o rejected the description of Israel as an “apartheid State”;
o reaffirmed Labor’s support for the UN’s historic endorsement of the two-State principle - a Jewish State and an Arab State co-existing peacefully;
o rebutted any so-called ‘One State solution’ of the Israel-Palestinian conflict from the Right or the Left;
o rejected a Qld Labor resolution which falsely accused Israel of “ethnic cleansing”;
o criticised Palestinian leaders for their lack of democracy and failure to grasp Israeli peace offers which would have led to a two-State outcome;
o reaffirmed Labor’s endorsement of the International Holocaust Remembrance Association working definition of antisemitism;
o expressed support for educating students to recognise and challenge specific forms of prejudice, including antisemitism; and
o agreed to consider broadening assistance for operational security costs for vulnerable community institutions.
