I suppose the one great thing about what you do is that you have a near-infinite supply of cardboard to make forts for Frida Sofia and other general baby/toddler/pre-school crafts later. That Meteora is just gorgeous and I'm usually not a fan of offsets. Fedex must have had someone jump onto that Lava-me from a great height to do that kind of damage through the box, foam and case. That is just crazy.

That's a big OOFF right there man... I've completely stopped shipping guitars via Finnish mail services because they are always late and they don't take care of packages no matter how many "fragile" stickers it has. I shipped my PRS to Thomann for some repairs a couple years back. I wrapped the guitar in bubblewrap, put it in my Gator case which is super well padded, then wrapped the case in bubble wrap and put all that in a sturdy carboard box with "fragile" stickers. Well, it arrived at Thomann super beat up and the headstock had pieces cracked off. Finnish postal service had put "damaged in transport" on it. Contacted the postal service and they denied to cover the repair, saying that it was my fault since they think it wasn't packaged good enough. I explained how I packaged it, and asked them to clarify how exactly it wasn't good enough. No clarification, had to pay for repairs myself. So now I only buy guitars from physical stores :D

Carbon fiber *can* warp, too sometimes. Ask a bow shop if they've ever saw a warped arrow. I sure have. And that's with no load on it. Better than wood, but still not perfect.
@reducedtoatoms3973
2 жыл бұрын
But what kind of carbon fiber? There’s plenty of composites and cf filled resins that loosely mimic actual carbon fiber. It’s just like polymers and alloys, there’s plenty of ‘em.
@JETGuitars
2 жыл бұрын
@@reducedtoatoms3973 this isn't just resin. If you split an arrow, it frays incredibly. I've worked with those resins; polyester resin, epoxy resin, etc. I built fiberglass, carbon fiber, and kevlar and other MEKP induced parts for cars and whole bodies for my job for several years. This is very tough stuff. This is more fiber than resin. And it's not the crappier polyester resin that shrinks, and deteriorates, and can't take UV as much. And it is actual carbon fiber. If you break an arrow, you can see the huge amount of long splinters and that it's actual carbon fiber. The arrows look similar to a huge stick of graphite. It's really good stuff, and has to take the impact of a 330 ft/s arrow that's several hundred grams on an area about 7mm wide. It's pretty impressive stuff, but even some of the best can still warp. Not necessarily saying it will inevitably do it. That depends on how it's built, too, but it's possible.

It’s like they forgot to add styrofoam around the front and back of the box of the lava guitar. Probably woulda saved the guitar from the hit (maybe maybe not). I wouldn’t be surprised if an over 100 lb package landed on the guitar with its back in the floor. Shippers need to do a better job of packaging their product. If it’s packaged well with better material + shape of the box around item it’s gonna make it in one piece.

I don't understand why so many Les Pauls use these same old orange/brown and ivory tones that were last popular in the seventies though, or the telecasters still coming in the sixties' pastel colors. Sure, nostalgia is a big reason for it, but I don't think there's nearly that much of a demand for *brand new* retro-looking guitars (as opposed to actual retro guitars), as there is supply of them...

See?! This is what I’m always saying about guitars like the Lava - they are very susceptible to breaking because it’s not made from a high quality bidirectional carbon fiber weave. It’s made out of powdered CF mixed into resin. It’s supposedly stronger than wood (though I question that because I’ve never seen a wood body break as much as this one in shipping), but it’s definitely not nearly as strong as a KLOS, McPherson, or Emerald that uses bidirectional CF - the latter of which is the kind used to build airplanes. People need to get educated about the types of carbon fiber and buzzwords like “composite” used to make people think they’re getting the real deal. People also need to know how to determine the real deal vs. when a brand uses a veneer that looks like bi directional CF on top of their powdered resin body. There’s also such a thing as unidirectional CF, like what Journey uses for their soundboard (the back and sides is powdered CF), which is stronger than the powdered CF but is still very much susceptible to breaking if it gets hit or falls at the wrong angle. For a little more money, you can get a full sized KLOS that is made of a bidirectional CF weave and will not break - they’ve run cars over them, taken them into pools, smashed them with a hammer, played baseball with it. They still worked fine afterwards. In fact, they have a lifetime warranty! I’ve had a full sized hybrid deluxe KLOS for several years that was gifted to me. It has a wood neck with CF stiffening rods and a bidirectional CF body - and it’s amazingly tough and sounds beautiful. They also make fully CF models (both body and neck). There are travel sizes, but the neck is removable on the full size so you can take it anywhere easily with all the strings still attached. Also check out their electric models. I’m not speaking on the basis of tone here. I’m purely speaking about strength. If you want a guitar to tote around, gig with, travel with, not worry about around rowdy kids/dogs, etc., I would not recommend these Asian guitars because they are fairly easy to break and damage - and there’s no easy way for most folks to repair them. These Chinese/Asian “CF” guitars are ok tone wise, but clearly you can see that it doesn’t take much to break them. They are not worth $900-$1200 (that’s the pricing I’ve seen) when you can get a real strong, 100% real deal CF guitar from KLOS for around that price or a bit more depending on the model (and you can save more with sales and b-stock). In fact, I’ve never even seen a wood guitar land at someone’s home with as much damage as this Lava 3. I also don’t think it’s honest that these Asian brands don’t list specs on their guitars at all or very little. They surely don’t mention the type of CF they use, but they also don’t speak about scale length, pickups, neck profiles, and anything else guitarists would want to know before purchasing. Why shouldn’t they list the specs and materials like all other guitar brands? If you want a real deal bi directional CF, guitar, get a KLOS, McPherson, or Emerald. They will last a lifetime and sound/play beautifully. Don’t buy a Rainsong, Lava, Enya, Journey, etc. if you’re looking for a virtually indestructible guitar. They are all made with the powdered CF/resin and/or unidirectional CF, which really is not appropriate to build a guitar with for strength. It does still sound ok and saves trees, and lots of people are happy with them . . . but know what you’re buying before you purchase like any other guitar so you won’t end up with a busted guitar and buyer’s remorse. 😉🤓
@withinthrall1445
2 жыл бұрын
So here’s some advice. You very well are right, most people don’t really know the differences in different carbon fiber. It’s a brand new thing to the market so of course people won’t know certain ones are stronger than others. Next time, don’t sound like a total prick giving advice or explanations on stuff like this. Instead of saying, “people need to get educated,” why not just simply educate people. Make videos explaining that you don’t want people falling for it and get something of quality. Your comment just makes you sound like an asshole who’s just a know it all. By the way carbon fiber in any form can be destroyed if someone else like fedex is handling it like a jackass. There is no evidence I’ve seen KLOS guitars are more indestructible than any others.

Me, a person that used to work at fedex, your guitar probably got hit hard by a jam pole as well as being compressed by other packages weighing over 100 pounds. That sucks. UPS isn't much better. They messed up a jackson that I sent out. I bubble wrapped the crap out of it as well as stuffed cardboard and more bubble wrap to make sure the guitar was secured and they still found a way to mess up a guitar. I also put fragile and to keep it standing up a specific way and they still didn't listen. It looked like it was thrown from 10 feet up from the pictures.
