Chinese Painted Quails aka Button Quail are ground dwellers that will live happily on the floor of an aviary of doves and finches. They scratch and will eat seed spilt by the other birds onto the floor but this is not enough to keep them happy and healthy.
Avoid salty foods especially snacks like crisps and pretzels, instead offering them fresh fruit and vegetables. They particularly enjoy green leaves like spinach, lettuce and seed grass. They will also happily eat fresh fruit like banana and ripe pear. In addition, cooked pasta and rice, or brown bread will go down well. Spreading peanut butter or jam on the bread will improve its nutritional value considerably.
Not all birds like the same foods so experiment. If they show no interest in a new food, sprinkle some seed over it to encourage them to try it. Be patient as it may take them a while to be willing to try and like new foods.
Vary their diet. Different foods will not only improve their nutrition but will provide interest with different textures and flavours. It will keep them healthy and help make them happy.
