In my dream, the room is lit by candlelight and Shy Girls are sprawled on a white sofa adorned with rose petals, drinking Merlot and wearing silk bathrobes. Sade is playing over the speakers, and the vibe is pure soft and sensual.
In reality, being welcomed into the Shy Girls loft is a much more casual affair. Those tender sexual elements are undeniable in the performance, but the group is comfortable and low-key behind the scenes. As the crew sets up, I chat with the members over champagne and coffee. The band reveals a playful, family-like dynamic.
Frontman/producer Dan Vidmar is the paternal force here. In collaboration with keyboardist Ingmar Carlson, he's surrounded himself with a key roster of musicians that give the songs enough depth and breadth to properly explore the boundaries of modern RnB. Intimacy is a constant theme in the music, but that word doesn't go far enough to describe the emotions elicited by "Under Attack."
We're first drawn in by Vidmar's trembling voice and woozy guitar bends, before the not-so-subtle lyrical yearning builds to a soprano saxophone solo. Waves of woodwind delay ascend into the final chorus, and we're left convinced that there's no chance of escaping such a direct, heartfelt "attack."
Adapting straight-ahead slow jams into a seven-piece lineup must be a highly personal experience, and it doesn't feel right trying to separate my preconceived notion of "Shy Girls" from the polite, understated personalities of its members. At the risk of exposing too much, it's probably best to unlearn everything we know about this project. Take a sip of Merlot, find that special someone, and let the sounds speak for themselves.
