Just finished my own long ride across Ireland on my endurance mare, Lilly! Knocking on total strangers doors for two months asking for a field for my horses and a place to camp was a real adventure but its an experience I think everyone should have with their own horse at least once in their lifetime :) I think long distance rides with you and your horse and the horizon bond you together like nothing else! Lot's of videos about it on my channel.

There is a LOT of conditioning that goes into it. I just did my first 25-mile ride last Saturday. But I had done ruffly 2 to 4 5 hour rides about 12 to 16 mile eaches week So both I and my horse were prepared for a longer ride. I will tell ya, the first long rides will always leave you a little sore, no matter how much you prepared beforehand XD When you get done with the ride always check your horse's tendons to make sure they are not hot or swollen, put some cool water on the horse's neck and shoulders the help drop the body temp, do not put it on the back end, it could cause the horse's hind end to lock up or cramp. And if you think your horse does have a cramp, massage it gently with some muscle ease. If your horse is refusing to drink water, try wetting its muzzle, along the nostrils and the mouth. If they smell/feel the water it may trigger them to want to drink. I am nowhere near educated enough on this topic to teach another person. I am simply sharing what I do know. There may be a better way to do it. I am sure with time, I will get better and learn more. The endurance rides in my country (USA) don't start back till like September, once the weather cools. Especially in my region, normal summers are between 95 and 105 degrees. No way I'm riding 25 miles 6 or 7 hours in the weather with a horse that is not ready for that. My horse is an 11YO 14hh Arab QH mare named Smokey. She is a grey flea-bitten (Basically she is white with a crap ton of black freckles) in the summer horse spots along her face and chest turn bright orange (I think cuz of the sun bleaching them). I suggest starting with shorter rides like 12 or 16-mile intros, almost every endurance ride you'll find in the US has an intro, a 25-mile LD, and a 50-mile endurance. And, sometimes they will have 75 or even 100-mile endurance.

Like you would train for marathons - build up the distance gradually -but with your horse. These horses are TOP athletes. I wouldn't jump on my dressage horse and say "HEY TROT/Canter 40+ miles ...and btw maintain a normal/healthy heart rate (vitals) and don't break down." Not fair .... to him or me....

When horses do endurance they are usually in great condition before the ride, but they use stored fat for energy so after a hot race in the desert they lose some weight. I am sure the horse went back to it's normal weight after the race. Kind of like human marathon runners-they eat alot before the race and after to keep their weight where they need it.

The Netherlands is cold compared to the middle East for sure. The way these riders deal with the large temperature change is this: They go to their destination well in advance so that both their horses and they can get used to the air, atmosphere, and temperature change :)

I find that at first sight this is a beautiful sport and if I would know anything about it I would support it. Sadly I know the truth my stable has rescued many horses from endurance stables with broken legs undernourished left with skin and bones. I am sure that not all of the endurance stables work like this and maybe the one from the video does not. But just be careful
