Fekat Circus, which means “blossoming circus” in Amharic, was started in 2004 thanks to the initiative of a young group of Ethiopians who had a common dream: to create a real circus made of young who had never thought to be on a stage in their life.
In 2008 Fekat Circus is recognized as Sport Club by the Addis Ababa Sports Bureau (Licence n. 17/1/04). The Fekat Circus Club becomes then a local non-profit making organization established by fifteen Ethiopian young circus artists aimed at promoting circus as agent of social change and development, providing a range of community services.
In 2009 the Fekat Circus moved into the center of the city, building its own theater and gym which is nowadays the most important circus school of the country.
Workshops and exchange programs with several African and European artists took place during the years to stimulate the group’s creativity, and many other projects were accomplished wishing to positively empower the surrounding community.
Today Fekat Circus counts 28 young permanent employees, working as circus trainers, performing artists, doctor-clowns and animators. We esteem the Association to reach every year around 650 marginalized children and youth, and over 10.000 hospitalized children.
