Phillip Sear plays the first piece from the 1922 'Robinson Crusoe' suite by the English composer, music teacher and pianist Felix (Harold) White (1884-1945).
-------------------------------------------------------
White was born into a Jewish family and worked with his father and brothers as a coal merchant before pursuing a career in music. He was largely self-taught, but received some guidance from Hubert Parry. He married a Swiss-German woman and became a conscientious objector during World War I. Later, he played piano, harpsichord and celeste with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and at Covent Garden; he also published a 'Dictionary of Musical Terms' and wrote biographies of composers.
White faced difficulties in getting his works performed and recognized. He became disillusioned with the musical establishment and stopped composing in the 1940s. He composed several orchestral works, such as 'Shylock', 'Astarte Syriaca', 'The Deserted Village' and 'Meditation'. He also wrote chamber music, choral pieces, songs and piano pieces (including six suites).
This excellent piece is based on a chorale-like theme, which slightly reminds me of "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott".
