Wranglerstar I absolutely love everything about all of your videos! Your work honestly covers all of my hobbies - (well perhaps I'm a little more biased into blacksmithing). I was introduced to your channel by my late brother who - since his youth until his fatal motorcycle accident at the age of 30 two years ago yesterday - was a huge fan of axes and chainsaws, cutting down trees and planting them. He quite naturally became a big fan of your videos and the lifestyle you portray in them and having the same interests as my brother, I too am a great fan of your channel. Keep up the great work, the excellent quality videos, and your unfaltering portrayal of good Christian morals and family values! May God bless you and your family! - James P.S. In good humor, I inherited a Fiskars splitting maul, a Fiskars axe, and a Fiskars hatchet from my brother...probably the one and only thing he'd disagree with you on :)

To the above comments, I did not make it clear in my post, my bad- Wranglerstar does not need a mention as he clearly stated the reason's why he cut his tree down. I was referring to the clueless people who pay a tree removal specialist? and don't use any of the wood at all, be it they don't have a fireplace or a garden. That's what I hate, and the tree specialist is the one who will make money on it by selling the wood pulp.I don't have a problem with Wranglestar cutting down trees.

Perhaps you have seen it already, but one of the video angles showing the tree falling, shows that it almost barber-chaired. I believe the fix for that would be to make your back cut at a little lower elevation. Say, around 2" above the level of the bottom of the wedge. If I may, tree size is always measured in diameter. When that doug fir was standing, you could wrap that Spencer tape around the tree (at a level of 4.5' above the ground,) and read the diameter on the diameter side of the tape. After it's down, you measure the stump across the flat top, or the butt end of the log . And nice job. You got the tree down with style.
@michaeldougfir9807

Yes, loggers, foresters, arborists, surveyors and others measure tree diameter at breast height (DBH = DIAMETER AT BREAST HEIGHT, which is 4,5 Feet above ground.)

Cody, if you wanted that tree out of the way then I am glad to see it come down. Great video!!! Ignore all of the greenie trolls who want to tell you what to do with your own property. How many trees have these trolls planted in the last year that wasn't for lawn decoration? I'll bet that number is a big fat zero! All talk and no walk. And who cares if you don't plant any trees. You saved your money to buy your property and now it is yours to do with as you wish. What about this idea. For all of the trolls that don't want you to cut down any more of YOUR trees, let them buy the right to determine when the tree needs to come down. Set the price that you would be comfortable with, say $100,000 a tree and let them put their money where their mouth is. See how concerned they really are about any one tree. By the way, was that tree going to live forever?

Nice one. How old is that DF? There are so many factors its impossible to guess the age. In a single stand, one tree may be only a quarter of the diameter of its neighbour of the same age. However, the opportunity is too much. So I'm going to guess 70-80? I've seen trees that wide at only 50 years old (but the inside will be useless) so that's really a wild guess. Taking my small fell ticket end of April, so if you ever need any help with felling... ;) Great videos as always. Remember, you can be a "tree hugger" but know the benefits of cutting them down!

Derekgough Gough What experience with trees do you have? If you're a seasoned forester you should be ashamed of yourself, you should know many factors affect growth. I can point to an individual Douglas Fir which is this width and was planted in the 1950s.

Your back cut was too high with regard to the scarf or undercut bottom cut, resulting in the hinge being taller and thinner. If you aimed the back cut to be about 1 to 2 inches above the scarf/undercut bottom, the hinge will be shorter in height but thicker, and can hold the tree to stop it moving away from the stump.

At 7:30 you commented about a timber company taking out a unit to the west of you (clear-cut, I presume) and how it changed weather patterns in your area. I'm glad you mentioned that. Many people wouldn't have believed that could happen if it weren't for your experience. Not necessarily commenting pro or con about clear-cutting, just that with anything you do in the woods (or in life for that matter), there are frequently unexpected, unintended consequences.
