I've learned a great many things from many people in the industry including mentoring from men who used misery whips to fall timber as young men. Of course I love watching all of the cringe worthy chain saw fails on utube. I must say it is refreshing to see a video, like this that simply and frankly shows how to make an effective and proper notch cut. All the fancy and creative felling methods mean nothing without a proper notch. Thank you Mr. Bender, well done.

Sure the first 2 cuts were great, he knows his stuff, but if he'd released the back strap properly he wouldn't have needed to jack it up on wedges, and turning your back on a falling tree and standing right there is just plain dumb, especially when it's a dead ash. The hinge could split at any point if the tree's that dry, and if it kicked back he'd have been dead. Taking common sense self preservation precautions doesn't make your dick smaller, and you may get to use it for longer too.

I think this is the best I’ve ever seen. I’m not a professional, but wood is my life and I cut an awful lot of it. I was trained about 25 years ago by a bro who, after returning from Viet Nam war, went to Alaska and was a tree tree topper and feller. He moved back after 10 years of that and taught me how to run a saw. This guy does everything correctly. The only thing I’d do is wear chaps...but that’s me. The only time I wear full protective gear is when I’m in brush bucking a tree and there’s crap everywhere that can snag a chain or trip me.

If this fella wants to drop a tree and use a saw without any safety gear, that’s his choice. News flash: Everyone watching this video knows of a few articles he’s missing.....everyone. I’ve been in the tree service industry my entire life and rarely use a hard hat, gloves, or chaps. I have my reasons, but will spare y’all the lecture. I’ll just say, “a comfortable feller is a focused feller”. Saws, bucket trucks. and wood chippers are my daily routine. I wear shades more for sun protection. Ear plugs are a must FOR ME bc I don’t like headaches. Even though I put more hours on a chainsaw in a week than most of you put on one in a lifetime, that gives me no right to criticize someone’s tactics or personal protective gear choices. This video shows a man willing to shut his saw off and take time to explain his procedure to those eager to learn....that’s more than I can say about myself. Time is money and I rarely slow down to explain or teach. That’s what I get from this video; This causes me to evaluate my workday and look for more opportunities to educate those around me. I searched “tree fails” and this popped up. There was no failure here. I would’ve done things slightly different, but the end result would be the same-tree on ground. You haters or condescending pros are forgetting that there is no “right” way, there’s just “your” way. You can’t learn how to do anything perfectly in life by merely reading a book. There are no “how to drop a tree” books. And if there is, how did they drop trees before it was published? Experience is the best teacher. Tree felling is not for idiots let me point out. This guy has a brain, was most likely around saws and trees for years, learned by watching others, and is now a reputable feller bc of experience. How does he know what NOT to do?..... Because he’s made mistakes like every one of us and even the writers of a “how to” book. God didn’t tell us how to drop trees in His Word, so we’ve kinda had to figure it ourselves. Learn from this video, apply it to your tree-cutting lives, and build on it.... And for heaven’s sake, if the only logs you’ve ever sawn were when you were snoring after a long night of critiquing KZitem videos, then please refrain from commenting.

That being said, you really must admit that this guy does a great job at explaining the process and the geometry and the strategy. I wish he would make a few training videos on my property. I have huge ash trees that were killed by E.A.B. bugs. One in particular is terrifying just to look at and imagine trying to fell. You mentioned about not turning your back on a falling tree, but rather walking away at a 45 degree angle. Those are very wise words, Sir! Too many people that fell trees have no business doing that kind of work, because of one thing: Carelessness like what this man did, after seeing the tree start to fall. I think we both know what would've happened, had that tree managed, somehow, to back kick. Also: Another thing is to look for any loose branches that might accidentally fall on the Cutter. I've heard of some very gruesome accidents that have happened because of loose branches. They can weigh quite a lot, and if one of them hits ya in the right spot, the next time somebody sees your name is in the Obituary Column of your Neighborhood Newspaper! Life's too short as it is. Why would anyone be dumb enough to make it shorter?

I also cut down trees for a living.This guy makes a simple and easy task as dangerous and complicated as possible. No need for bore cut or wedges. Should always move all vehicles ect..need to cone or rope off road.Stood under tree the whole time after making back cut which was upside down. no safety equipment etc...

Interesting you mention barber chair, maybe the camera angle was bad, however the lean of this tree appear to justify the bore cut to avoid barber chair. I did like his wedging technique though. I dropped a tree not too long ago that the diameter of the tree was limiting the depth of my wedges when I performed a traditional back cut.

Instead of leaving just one truck near the tree (or parking it somewhere else) you could line up all your cars (friends' cars) as close to where the tree is going to fall on either side and see if you can avoid them all.

Loved the video. My 92 yr old father started felling trees in Maine at the age of 8. He NEVER wore a hard hat or chaps. I think its a good idea. But there is a cut of men that are a cut above the rest. He also was an iron worker scaling skyscrapers. Some men have no fear.... Good or bad, just saying.........
@bethelle9099

@Semper Fi , Truth in your statement. But by definition, my father is what people label a 'macho man'. True, the extra testosterone can affect common sense. But men like him have less fear than the average man. He was a thrill seeking macho man that loved the Harleys and fast cars. He was a 'doer' in life and was fortunate enough not to have killed himself. I attribute his good health, healthy central nervous system and ruggedness to only having vaccinations when he was in the Army. My generation, my son, and grand daughter have all been injured by them....take care!

If the tree splits from the bottom up while felling it, the man would be dead in the positions he's in while cutting. Main cause of early death for loggers where I come from. It does happen.... Maybe where some safety gear as well. "WHAT!?" Safety gear, like hearing protection and stuff

That is the entire reason for bore cutting.One is controlling the release of the trees tissue.Aside folk walking in front of notched direction with top heavy dead ash tree,this guy was textbook.Darn bore beetles killing our ash trees,wiping them out.Had ash been more valuable as our walnut,cherry,etc,,states would of did something but say goodbye to our ash.To lax with imported goods.More needs to be done,think came in from michigan.

6:10 why did you cut below your bore line? Cutting even with it would've released the tree without further pounding on the wedges, wouldn't it have?
@Dieselfan1997

Bc when u do a bore cut on a tree there's a risk of when u do the back cut more of the stump may come with the tree than expected and could cause the saw to go with the tree or even have chunks come back at you if u do the release cut slightly below the bore cut it's basically a safer way of releasing the tree without the risk of having your saw go with the tree or have stuff fly back from the stump
