The International Chess Federation recently announced that "trans women" (males who identify as women) would not be able to participate in female-only international chess events. Many have criticized this decision, pointing out that unlike many sports, chess is not a competitive activity in which males' edge in strength, size, and speed can provide them with an advantage. However, many female chess players, including former world women's champion Susan Polgar, argue that there are several good reasons why it is important to continue having female-only events. As a former competitive chess player as well a psychologist, I agree with Susan. In this video, I discuss why.
