Here's a video idea! You guys are the undisputed kings of the shootouts. What if you take a Squier Classic Vibe, a Made in Mexico vintera series, a USA reissue, a custom shop, and an actual vintage guitar (all based in the same decade, presumably 50s or 60s) and do a blindfold test. I think that would be a super interesting video and a good way to go straight up the line. Throw me a 👍if you agree!

I didn’t either, or so I thought. I played a PRS since 2001. But when I got a *good* strat, there really is a certain magic to them. They’re not the easiest to play compared to others, & they’re a pretty lousy choice for metal shredding with modern alternatives, but there is something undeniably amazing when you’re chugging out tones like in the beginning of this video. They’re super dynamic instruments, and you can get the sweetest quiet sounds or if you snap the strings like you want to break them they’ll just wail and thump. It just feels like a much more engaging and ‘connected’ instrument than my other electrics, and the clarity on all the pickups with all the chimey overtones is soooo good.

Way before the 5-way switch players modded their strats so that the lower tone control would actually be a separate volume control wired into the middle pickup, and the bridge and neck would be wired to the 3-way switch just like in a telecaster. This would give you not just the middle positions, but also neck+bridge and all three. It was called the Memphis wiring, though it's very possible that it has other names too.

If you think you can feel the wood grain when you bend strings, that's just scratchy frets. Your strings never actually make contact with the fretboard, try it out. It's another reason why it doesn't make sense that your fretboard material would affect the sound at all.

Danish Pete's demo of the Vintera has convinced me. Wasn't it Ritchie Blackmore or Jimmy Page who was credited with making most early use of the 'inbetween' tones -- or have I mis-remembered that? Strats and tele's; my first grab for playing/recording. I like 'em all. I personally like alnico pickups and any board radius, material and neck shape is fine. We did use the #2&4 positions in the 50's. They only had a millionth of an inch place that would work, and they wouldn't stay there at all. We used to wildly run the blade back and forth trying to wear it out and then put fat tooth picks in the slot to make it stay still. Never worked.... then came alternate wiring of the pickups....I suspect players found this out on day one or two of ownership. Thanks fellas!

That blue is such a yummy colour. I have a (I think?) '60s Classic player Mexican 2017 that sounds fantasticly stratty in all the right ways. I have no idea what picukps are in it, but it has for sure converted me to loving Pao Ferro fretboards even more than RW. I would also say I can definitively feel the fretboard when playing and honestly can't stand the glassy plastic feel of laquered fretboards. I have started to thoroughly clean the fretboard and resand them woth 1200 grit sandpaper and give it new oil when swapping strings and feels oh so right.

First principle - No two guitars sound the same regardless of whether they are identical in every observable way. That understood, real vintage ‘50s and ‘60s Strats generally sound very different in the vast majority of instances. As you mentioned, the body wood changed from Ash to Alder in ‘56 and the pickups were constantly but subtly evolving. By ’61 they were distinctly mellower, ’62 being what many consider the optimum Strat pickup. Neck profiles and thickness from ‘50s thicker to ’60s thinner, changed the mass of the neck and this was greatly influential on the sound of the guitars. Experience has shown that rosewood vs. maple fingerboards regarding brightness of tone is a myth. Blind trials and experience have shown that there is no consistent or predictable tonal difference between a rosewood and a maple fingerboard on a Fender guitar. I have heard and played Strats and Teles with rosewood boards that were brighter than those with maple boards and vicey versey. While the neck as a whole is highly influential on the tone and resonance of a guitar, the fingerboard wood apparently does not affect the brightness of any particular guitar very much or at all. They do feel different to play, however, and whichever you prefer, that’s the one for you. Tonally though, not really a factor. As for lacquer on the board, Pete, I’m skeptical. I’d like to see a blind comparison. Also; yes, a properly set up 7.25” radius neck will not fret out unless you intend to do 1½ step bends and such. Very low action is not a good idea, anyway. In many instances, slightly raising the action (and lowering the pickups) improves tone and sustain, but that’s another discussion.

I got a 50s spec and it’s everything I wanted compared to my Player series strat (although I love my player). I’ve heard the differences, both are great but I certainly feel that nothing beats that original 54 sound

Glad to see you play the shell pink one this time around. The last video when Pete picked it up, plugged it in, then set it down I was pretty disappointed. 😂

Captain and Pete, in the documentary in the 90s ‘Curves, Contours and Bodyhorns’ about the Strat, Chris Rea, while not saying he discovered the in between sounds, talks about it and how players used to jam a matchstick in to hold the switch in place.

The thing that would make me pay for even the cheapest US Fender is if they'd offer custom options like color and fingerboard wood... For instance... A Pink Shell body is nice... But if I want one with a maple fingerboard I have to really search hard and pay up or go partscaster

Hey guys, great vid - I love my 60s c neck. Did you record this using the Universal Audio OX ?

Pick fingerboards based on what you think looks best. Our eyes deceive us, everyone thinks rosewood is darker and warmer sounding because the color is dark and warm. In reality no one could distinguish the sound between rosewood and maple in a blind test.

It's really strange for me since the late 80s when I started playing I always loved the thick warm bridge humbucker sound recently I do t know why the thin single coil of a strat I don't know I like it I suddenly like the thin metallic sound I really have got to get a strat now I'm itching it's the placement of the volume knob that I guess I'll have to get more comfortable with but oh my goodness that sound even clean

Maturing as a player. See it a lot. Chose tone not noise. Strat first then a tele. Sonic heaven. 👍

Remove the neck pickup tone pot, wire all the pickups to the remaining tone pot, and move the volume pot down a spot. That's how my Warmoth strat is set up (with push/pull pots in both spots, one to split my humbuckers and one for a midboost circuit that came with my Ghost piezo system). I have both wired as volumes though, one electric and one piezo.
