I have 3 Strats: one with a very tight neck pocket, another one with a small gap and the third one with quite a gap on both sides. From my playing experience, it does not make a huge difference. Mostly aesthetic. The main factors to the resonance and sustain are the wood material, the fact the neck pocket sould be clean of any paint/lacquer residue and the neck fitted tignt (but not too much) when mounted. Ideally, you mount the neck with strings on, bring them up to tune and then only tighten the screws. The neck should be fitting tight, but not with an excessive torque to risk splitting the wood. Also, before putting the screws in, put some parrafin on them, so that they will run in smoothly, particularly in a hard wood like maple.

I've got a 2012 1959 Fender American Vintage in sonic blue with a rosewood board and clay dots. Fender 1959 pickups. Love it so much the tone is amazing. Mick from That Pedal Show says the 2012-2013 American Vintages Fender produced were some of the very best. The build quality as well was extremely close to Fenders custom shop range so probably why they changed them after that.

I have one of these, and I don’t see, hear, or feel any imperfections. I had a first year ‘57 American Vintage Reissue Strat in Surf Green from 1988 that I unfortunately sold in circa ‘03… I’ve been looking to replace it and while Sea Foam Green isn’t Surf Green, I ordered one anyway (I’m a maple neck Fender guy)… I grow more fond of this Strat every time I pick it up. It just nails that Strat tone and feel. The Sea Foam Green really does look good and accentuates the Strat lines so well! I also own a 2014 ‘56 RI Strat as well in Black. It’s a truly great instrument as well. They are played through my backline: a 59 Bassman LTD w/4 blue Jensen 10’s along with a Vox AC/30 HW2 with a pair of blue alnico Celestion 12’s…tone Heaven! Great guitar Fender, Thanks!

Love my Fiesta Red V62 Re-issue Rosewood I purchased in 1989. However over the years I have modded it. I replaced all the bridge/saddle hardware with titanium parts as the chrome just rusted away, despite me using sowing machine oil on it regularly. I also had it Buzz Feitened, and then when the scratch plate started to split at the screw points I replaced it with a mint green one which matched the mint green covers on the Kinman Traditional Avn 11 PUPS I also added. I also have the Bridge/Neck blend integrated on the lower tone etc pot. I love being able to blend the bridge PUP with some neck.

I know what you mean about the “nitro drag.” It’s always there on fresh Fender lacquer, in my experience. It goes away eventually. neck pocket gaps are totally fine, if you’re using a bolt on neck you’re probably never going to get a perfect wood-on-wood seal. Stunning guitar and beautiful tones. However, that neck pocket gap is unnaceptable for a guitar of over 2 grand. It doens't matter if it influences the sound or not, it's an guitar that is expensive over the assumption that as it's made in US, it's subject to more care and attention compared to the ones made in Asia. Tone aside, this wide of a gap will surely allow your neck move, messing with its intonation. That being said, If I had to bet, I'd say it's just bad luck with this one. Awesome vid and playing as always! Cheers

@MerovingianBR
2 жыл бұрын
@@johnnathancordy IMHO your approach was perfect, you pointed everything you noticed (good and "bad"), letting people decide for themselves the importance of each during their own decision making proccess. And yes, with a really tight neck joint your thin nitro finish will eventually crack over the heal joint, but that's the tradeoff (and charm) you get when you opt for a nitro finish guitar, the whole guitar will eventually crack, that's a given. However, from the video images, it really seems that it could have been a tighter. Cheers!

My vintage 60s Fenders have bigger gaps than that. The neck doesn't move at all. It's just cosmetic but I agree on a modern guitar it looks a bit large.
@400_billion_suns
2 жыл бұрын
If it’s tight, you eventually get neck pocket cracks. We all know wood expands and contracts slightly with humidity and temperature changes. A perfect fit is only perfect under the same temperature and humidity as it was built. Tuning stability is not affected at all. That’s a myth. The stability of the neck comes from the bolted joint friction, not the walls of the pocket. And if it were so loose that you needed the walls of the pocket to stabilize it, you’d definitely be losing string energy in that joint.
@MerovingianBR
2 жыл бұрын
@@400_billion_suns I've got your point and won't argue as I'm FAR from being a specialist, my opinion is solely based information that I consume randomly. I've recently seen a video on That Pedal Show where Mick takes his 61 Strat to Montys for a refret and even after removing the bolts, the neck was tightly secured by friction alone. The same goes for a video from David Davidson from Wellstrung Guitars authenticating a 1951 Telecaster. Ben from Crimson Guitars has rencently explained on a video that it was a commom practice between builders to add a thin piece of sandpaper when the joint was not tight enough to avoid neck pivoting that could potentially mess with the intonation. I rationalized this information like, considering that wood contracts and expands, the bolt holes are also subjected to changing dimensions making it slightly lose or even tigther, with a tighter neck pocket, you're trying to mitigate this risk. That was my thought process, but as I said, I may be wrong. Cheers!

Neck pocket gaps are irrelevant when it comes to sustain/resonance and the people in the comments who are calling neck pocket gaps "flaws" or "bad craftsmanship" are just looking for something to criticize although it has zero impact on the guitar and its tone whatsoever. My Fender American Original 50s Tele from 2018 has neck pocket gaps on both sides and it's by far the most resonant guitar that I have, my MIM Fender Strat on the other hand has a very tight neck pocket and it's nowhere near as resonant as my American Tele. And of course the wood itself matters, some pieces of wood are just inherently more resonant than others. The energy between neck and body is transferred through the screws and through the main surface area of the neck pocket and the neck. It's very important to have a properly flat sanded neck pocket so that the screws can pull the body and neck together very tightly. That's where the energy transfer happens, not through the very small "sidewall" area of the neck pocket. Also have a look at vintage Fenders. You'd be surprised how many of them have very loose neck pockets and people didn't care back then. So why should we care about that now?
@johnnathancordy
2 жыл бұрын
There definitely is debate around the idea of the neck pocket gap - I personally have no idea about the science/whether it matters - but it's probably relevant if someone is dropping a lot of money on a guitar - doesn't necessarily even have to be a criticism, could just be a preference?

The high E is practically hanging off the frets above the 12th fret. Totally unacceptable! The fact that a customer has to loosen the neck plate bolts and tap/pull/push the neck in the pocket is ridiculous. That gap is so large that isnt even going to make it right.

The QC on this particular guitar is unacceptable; especially when it's a brand new model, and going to be used for a review on KZitem. I had the same finish flaw on the tip of the headstock of my Classic Series Lacquer Stratocaster. I was fine with it, cuz it's a "budget" vintage style Fender made in Mexico. A $2k US made guitar should have NO flaws in the finish whatsoever, especially on the headstock. Kinda disappointing.

On the one hand though, I'm kinda glad that they don't have a "separate" bunch of guitars reserved for review?

2K for a guitar replete with finish flaws, imperfectly cut nut, a neck pocket gap?...Typical Gibson...oh, wait...

Would of been nice to here some vintage tones - what you play is great but to me sounds like all your other guitars and not everyone plays with an Eric Johnson tone. So this has not convinced me to buy. Need to check out someone else who demos the guitar like how it was ment to sound, (Vintage tones)

A guitar is not "meant" to sound like anything. It sounds like a player playing it. Other videos are available with other players.

@@johnnathancordy All I’m saying is, it would be nice for you to play something different that’s all. Your a great player but it’s the same thing every time regardless of guitar. And I just want it here some proper vintage tones as in Buddy holly, Hank Marvin etc….
