I had the 6-string Fender Resonator Guitar for about 6 months and BOY … I was glad to sell that thing on. I liked it in the store, took it home and magically it NEVER worked right after. I did become an expert on the adjustment and talking to other techs until I found the HONEST one that said “it’s a toy”. At least you made it functional and it is pretty, a musical curiosity
@michaelpond6386

Some bass resonators came with a felt gasket around the cone between the cone and the body. They were to lessen string buzz prevalent in bass resonators. They also provided some extra pressure into the body to make the guitar louder. That might be the source of all that glue. Piezo pick ups were typically not mounted in the bottom of the cone but were mounted using a sticky ball to the spider.

It's a Fender FR-51! Made only in 2003 and the wisdom of the internet says it wasn't discontinued fast enough. Rumour has it that Fender made this as kind of a joke for a Dr Pepper commercial starring Garth Brooks and then people started screaming for them. In the end, only around four hundred were ever made. Just an FYI, the piezo on the resonator was factory. Owners of these things say that you can only get the resonator sound on the top strings with the fattest string set available and then only a little.

Bass have more energy not less but is because one thing. Energy is a mix of frequency and amplitude. Bass have less frequency but a lot of amplitude and the result is more energy at the end. Still energy is dispersed in the space. Guitar frequency is more forward and is louder in front of the guitar. Bass frequency is dispersed in all directions making it a lot less volume in front. Also human ears are extremely bad hearing bass sound that's why you need a lot of energy to be heard. The best thing you can do is amplify acoustically the harmonics of bass notes.

Nice work, Dave. A minor correction, though - the wooden insert (saddle) in a spider-style bridge is not usually called a ‘biscuit;’ 5:11 12:07 14:40 15:41. ‘Biscuit’ refers to the round biscuit-shaped piece of wood that fits on top of a different style of resonator cone, like the National-style single cone resonator system.

I’ve seen resonator Basses on line, maybe once in person. I thought having one would be cool. Not now. It’s not loud enough and the tailpiece with Bass strings doesn’t seem right. I’d keep it though if I was the owner. You’ve changed my mind. You also changed my mind about the Precision Bass. I had one back in the 70’s (my first Bass) and I was constantly longing for a Rick. The more twang machine. I still want a Rick but I now see Fenders (a 51, 55, Precision, Mustang and Jazz) as the ones to use. Better engineering and possibly more reliable than others. I have to admit that I do also want a Hofner with flatwound strings. It pays dividends to watch your channel. Thanks much!!!✌️🌞😎🎸
