Recognition is growing that we need to think beyond seed banks to conserve the entire range of native plant species across Australasia. This is because some plant species are difficult to conserve in seed banks. These species are collectively known as 'exceptional species', which includes species for which seeds are not available, as well as species with desiccation sensitive, freeze-sensitive or short-lived seeds, and species with deeply dormant seeds. The conference begins with a welcome from Dr Fiona Fraser (Acting Threatened Species Commissioner) followed by a keynote address from Professor Hugh Pritchard. The first session is then dedicated to identifying exceptional species. Dr Karen Sommerville discusses seed storage behaviour categories, Dr David Merritt explains how to identify short lived seeds, Dr Eric Bunn delves into tissue culture as a technique for supporting ex situ conservation and Dr Cathy Offord explains how living collections support ex situ conservation.
