Hiller is an interesting figure, that first etude sounds a lot more modern than it is. Reminds me of Alkan's Op. 27

There's a midi version on KZitem too, and believe me, this sounds much better. Still, the lack of dynamics could make you think it's midi.

It gets worse when you learn that Hiller's family was Jewish. (The family name was originally Hildesheim, but was changed to Hiller to sound less Jewish.)

Indeed, although where Alkan starts on the downbeat, Hiller starts slightly before, creating a deceptive rhythm.
