In this video you will see some rehearsals with Alessandra Ferri and Massimo Murru in the Giselle pas de deux, coached by Patrice Bart. This second part also includes a brief clip of Patrice Bart in Giselle, and of Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn in the ballet. There are also some interviews with Ferri and Murru in French and Italian, I have translated them:
voice: Patrice Bart was a passionate, excellent Albrecht. He passes the tradition of the role on to Massimo, the way only the great interpreters can do.
The history of this ballet brings the three choreographical ... of the 19th century together; Italy, Russia and France. It was created at the Opera de Paris in 1841 by Coralli and Perrot, with the Italian Carlotta Grisi, with whom Théophile Gautier, the author of the libretto, was in love. The Frenchman Marius Petipa restaged Giselle in Russia. Les Ballets Russes brought it back to Paris, with Karsavina, Nijinsky and Spessivtseva. Later the Opéra de Paris found Giselle again thanks to Serge Lifar. Carla Fracci found in it the role of her life. For all of today's stars, like Monique Loudières, dancing Giselle is an important event. The greatest reference is of course the unforgettable Yvette Chauviré. Albrecht was the preferred role of Rudolf Nureyev. On his grave there are white lilies, symbol of this ballet.
Massimo Murru: I believe that when people think of Albrecht, they think of the greatest; from Nureyev to Baryshnikov to Vasiliev to Erik Bruhn... The greats. It frightens you. Not the confrontation, but being opposite such artists. It frightens you, but it also stimulates you.
voice: Nureyev formed a mythical couple with Margot Fonteyn in Giselle.
Alessandra Ferri: When I danced with Rudolf, I couldn't look him into the eyes, and so at that point I understood, I understood what it means not having the force to look someone in the eyes because, because you love them, and because you see that he can see through your skin; he sees the spirit, the soul; you are naked, completely naked in front of him.
voice: For Alessandra Ferri, the music of Adolphe Adam is the first inspiration that allows her to live the role. She likes saying that in the second act, to give the impression of being a spirit, she plays with the musical measures, rather than doing the steps on certain notes. Giselle calls the urgence of love to mind, moments of happiness, madness, tragedy, the past and the present. Giselle is eternal.
