Christos Hatzis (*1953) composed his first marimba solo & digital audio „Fertility Rites“ 1997.
The title of this exceptional work derives from the Inuit throat songs themselves.
The digital audio is inspired by an original fertility ritual, a shamanistic mating call which the women performed while the men were out hunting.
Three movements of this piece represent the performer’s „thoughts“ or „instincts“ in contrast to the instrument on stage which represents the performer’s „voice“.
The „French-sounding“ 2nd movement uses special performing techniques of the pre-recorded marimba, such as bowing, which in terms of timbre and musical treatment represent a virtual extension of the instrument’s abilities.
