Hi Pete. I can usually tell how good or not good a machine is in its dust extraction design the following morning after use. A cold = useless, a slight sniffle = not very good, no change to my breathing and no crusty nose....= excellent. The rotex is the last category, excellent. Totally fine to have it bad with Festool. @DavidStanton
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan, thanks for that question which has also been on my mind. The rotex is a machine that stands alone. I am considering a finer finish sander and the Festool cordless machines are very tempting for that purpose but think about this, the rotex has a 5 mm stroke and is also a geared sander if I need it to be. The cordless machines have a 2 mm stroke and no gear driven force. They are quite simply very different machines. So, yes to buying the rotex.

Dan: I bought my first random sander, a Bosch PEX12 AE many years ago. While it is an acceptable machine for those very light jobs, it lack the REAL power to sand with authority! So, I went to the newer GEARED ones, buying a Makita BO6050 that is similarly powered to the Rotex, and after using it for both heavy and light jobs, I'll try to sell my old Bosch. If anyone considers using cordless sanders, it is beacuse their use will be "light" on "small" jobs, as you need srious power and batteries won't do it.

Me too. While my Makita 6050 has practically the same power as the Rotex and the large Bosch, I find that on rough wood or large surfaces, a belt sander with Variable Speed is best to start with, and then go to a quick pass with the Geared mode on the Makita 6050, and finally the random, ungeared mode. It is not that the geared sander could not abrade enough, but it seems not best to place wear and tear on the MUCH larger surface of even the smaller 3" X 21" belt sanders.

Very exciting to watch! I'm about to sand our 300 year old stairs (Germany). Our professional carpenter will be overseeing my work but he says that I'll be fine and that the main challenge is how tedious and uncomfortable the work is. He recommends Festool tools- we have plenty of sanding to do in this old house. He likes the 150 Excenter Sander (not sure what that is in English) but the shop where I want to order it suggested the Rotex 125. What is the difference and what is more practical? He also recommends getting the Delta sander for awkward places. What do you think? Thanks for the inspiration!

Personally I would get 2 rotex machines, 150 and 90 mm. The 90 has the ability to get into corners very well and has the advantage of being a geared drive. It is not heavy, therefor easy for overhead work. The 150 works well on flat surfaces and has a lot more power than the 125 rotex.

Festool tools are built and assembled in Germany, which is quite unique nowadays. That is the reason why they are so expensive, beside the fact that you pay for the brand more than the product itsel, just like Snap-On. Strongest competitors are still Makita and Dewalt, nothing wrong with them either. Festool does a lot right, they use a lot of brushless motors which adds a lot of life to the machines.

They are all used regularly.A lot of the time people can lean on a better quality machine to improve their game and there is nothing wrong with that either.I am curious about your comment on the scroll saw as I did not know that Festool make one. Can you please show me a link so that I can see the one you are referring to in comparison to your Dewalt?Porter cable do make some fine machines, as do Milwaukee. I stand by my comment on the rotex as I have used countless sanders in my 42 years in the building industry in Australia working in joinery shops as an apprentice through to owning my own construction company with over 20 associated tradesmen working for me. The closest that any sander has come to the Rotex was a Rupes. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the feedback.

***** Hi David, I have a Festo sander, (I not sure if Festo was the predecessor to Festool), but it's 25 years old and still going strong.I'm always intrigued that some people get so defensive about power tools and that how expensive Festool products are as Shawn did, and how good there brands are and yet they are so much cheaper . Yes there are many good brands out there, personally I have a lot of makita tools, and don't actually own any Festool products yet. But I liken it to Mercedes and Holden, yes they will both take you down the road to visit the in laws, but it just feels so much better, more luxe in the Mercedes! Hey Dave, I occasionally build end-grain cutting boards, and I want a better/quicker solution for leveling it off after a glue-up. My wood supplier can run them through his wide belt sander if needed, but I'd rather be able to do it myself so I don't need to wait. I do have a handheld belt sander, which works, but always seems to leave lines of deeper scratches if the sander isn't perfectly flat. I've been considering a Rotex 150 for this, but I'm curious how aggressive it would be on end-grain compared to the belt sander? Thanks much.

I used this Rotex, along with its two baby brothers, while working in the trades. I would love to know if there is an equivalent machine out there made by another company as that Rotex is a pretty penny. There's something to be said for purchasing high quality tools though and over the years of using those sanders, we replaced the white sanding pad and that's about it. My only complaint was that if you used it in conjunction with a Festool vac, the power plug would constantly get pulled out ( both large and small vacs had this issue) and this happened even with their drywall sander. This led me to often abandon the Festool vac and hook straight into our trusty Rigid 4gal shop vac. Sacrilege... I know.
@DavidStanton

Those festool sander are unbreakable, motors can run hours whitout problem All the details in festool machines are smart choices (the cable is soft , easy to move, you can unplug it, the dust extractor is connected with a special mecanism and never falls.) They are the best too in term of dealing with the dust , i have 2 sanders festool, i use them in house of my clients without hesitation . no need to protect the things, there is 0 dust, litteraly. That's why in Belgium/France and certainely in others country around Europe, in shops we have Dewalt, bosch, Milwaukee etc.. but allmost all the professionals in wood working are working with festool machines. juste be carefull, this Rotex is the heavy modele of the brand. Its very powerfuyll but verry heavy too. IF you need a classic sander , donc go with rotex, go with ETS EC 150

+Magnus Ericsson Not a good thing to hear Magnus! I have a couple of suggestions. A lot of people I know use sanders in a manner where they lift the edge a bit to apply more force on the opposing edge. This will destroy the pads backing material and also create havoc with the supports in the machine that hold the pad evenly. How long have you owned the machine? It might be a good idea to take it back to the dealer you purchased it from. I know people who have owned the rotex 150 for over 9 years and never missed a beat.
@emmmie
9 жыл бұрын
+David Stanton Hey, 9 years. That sounds great. One of the best things about the large diameter sander with the hard pad is that it's easy to sand big surfaces, flat. Just let the sander work for you. So no I wouldn't use it on the side, grinding with it. And for now it has only begun sounding a bit different compared to new. It functions well, still. But it really throws away the pad in oscillating mode if I don't keep it forced down on the surface when powering on the machine. It does this with all pads I have. I thought it had something to do with the construction and affected all rotex 150. Maybe it's just mine! Maybe I'll send it in for service. Festool is really helpful and quick with reparing. But I hate the thought of not having the rotex at home =)

We had a 6 inch Rotex sander too. That thing could sand aggressively and remove material fairly quick or be set to finishing instead. They have a knob or something on the side that switches it. I also like how clean Festool can be with the dust collector. Sure you might think that other brands are really good but when used correctly with the dust vacuum, they leave very little if any dust to clean up. I like things that are German and Festool is an expensive German brand. If you are faint of heart and used to buying cheap tools you might regret looking at the prices of these tools. You do however, get what you pay for and these things will outlast Harbor Freight tools and other low quality tools.

bosch 1285dvs is a better sander 1/2 the price . I'm not a festool hater but sander are not there strong point. Bosch professional line of sanders beat them hands down I use them to built furniture and I do floor work as a trade. For fine finish I use my mirka and bosch 1/2 finish sander. The reviews on the sanders are mostly people justifying the price they paid and not results but as with this video the bosch would of done the work faster there disc mode is better then FT and then finish up in RO mode. I do not like one tool over another I like the best. The only bosch tools I own are sanders BTW. Also keep in mind that when you are looking at videos from overseas the price difference between festool dewalt and bosch are not so far apart as they are in the US.

Thank you for your comment Richard Appugliese. As you say, it comes down to which sander does the job best and unlike your findings, I get the best results from my Festool machines. The only mahine I would prefer would be the Mirka 6 inch 3 mm stroke for finish work.

Fucking good video Dave, many thanks! What's the difference (in effect) between random and geared?
@DavidStanton
9 жыл бұрын
+lifeshort In effect, my take on it is geared is a crazy aggressive pattern that continues even when a downward force is applied. Random orbit has a 5 mm stroke ( 5mm circular pattern) in addition to the whole disc spinning. If enough downward force is applied the disc will stop spinning but the 5mm stroke will continue.

Lol, Apologies.... The Mirka Is a fantastic tool, I worked as a pattern maker for over 10 years for various companies, Sometimes we could be sanding for weeks at a time and The Mirka sanders ( or copies which are very good aswell) Was the sander you would see everywhere, It is probably about the same price as the festool so it isnt cheap either, but it's about 1/3 the size, great tool for using for extended periods, If you never get the chance to use one, i highly recommend trying their Abranet sandpaper and discs, It is an "abrasive net" so looks nothing like a traditional disk with the 7 holes, Instead it has thousands of small holes (just like a net) so never clogs and 100% dust removal. It's a bit more expensive than a traditional disc but lasts alot longer aswell.
@DavidStanton

+Aaron Elliott Festool have a product called villies which is an aluminium mesh that works remarkably well and is a bit more expensive than their 16 hole paper. They also have a paper called granat which I think is a ceramic abrasive that is coated. They claim it lasts 30% longer than their other more traditional papers.

Hello David, Few weeks ago I asked you if you ever used drywall sander and you said no. I did purchase one and it works fantastic. I’m renovating 1882 Victorian house and I have sanded old walls. Horse hair plaster and I tell you came out beautiful. Beautiful part is I didn’t have to worry about dust. Fantastic tool I hope you will add the video about drywall sander and hopefully painters will add this tool in their van. Thank you

Hi Dave, thank you very much for your response. I own a few Festool products and I couldn’t be happier with them, however I have yet to purchase one of their sanders and that was the reason for my question. I take on board what you have said- I think you are advising me to go ahead and get the rotex and possibly add a cordless one later. I love your videos David, always informative but even more importantly honest. Cheers David
