As an old-school XI player who also loves XIV, it's really cool to see how you've played it in reverse and are still enjoying your time with it. I haven't played in about 10 years or so by now, but I'll always have fond memories of the game, even after they introduced the QoL stuff like trusts. As you've found out, they're greatly needed since AFAIK our old way of grouping up in parties to grind mobs to level is pretty much dead due to most people being maxed level. Very cool video! Also, if you want more Shantotto, go visit Windurst and work towards unlocking her as a trust companion so you always have her rhyming in chat while she's nuking enemies with you!

Thank you SO much for your comment, it's wonderful hearing other player's experiences in FFXI since I feel it was a journey I missed entirely, but now feels like it was just waiting for me. ^^ I'll be sure to check! In Windurst a cutscene of Evil-Shantotto triggered (I think from Shantotto Ascension) so I'm worried she might nuke me instead 😥

Hello, former 11 player now 14 player, been a bit over 10 now for me too... I played 11 for nearly 10 years, now 14 for more than. I have many fond memories of 11, though some of the greatest parts of 11 were also some of its worst parts, namely the world being actually dangerous coupled with a fairly punishing death penalty and at least pretrust exp being pretty harsh of a punishment to lose considering how hard it was to grind out. Good because it gave the world a real feeling of danger, bad because so much time lost... also also, having to home point when you in the far reaches of nowhere, of course there are outpost warps... but most people didn't even know about them. Moreover really hard to get the outposts of other nations, as a bastokian I had managed to unlock them all however! I have considered for a long time now making a return to 11... but im not even sure if I still have access to my old account (I have moved soo many god damn times) I'm not sure I would want to start from scratch, not that any of the gear I have/had before quitting is still meta but I had a few relics weapons.

@@svenstevenson2245 Thanks for sharing your experience:3 Thankfully they got rid of that system, so now it seems like you can teleport to any Outpost no matter how Conquest is going + you can teleport from any crystal now. @@NoPurposeIndie you have no idea... so many times retracing steps because you drew aggro in a zone where monters are "decent challenge" in a level 75 area (when it was still level cap) and you are by your self (pre trust system) and it took you 45 minutes to get where you were... and you down leveled so you asked a white mage friend to come find you to raise you... but they die on the way too lol. As counter intuitive as it may sound, it made the game better, as there were consequences and "real" danger in nearly every zone. Didn't hurt that shortly after like level 10-15 most monsters even a few levels bellow you are significantly stronger than a player character. I would recommend checking out the blue mage class when you get a chance, it's one of the most interesting ones IMO in 11 and quite powerful too.

Early FFXI was so well done, start in one of the three nation cities, go out into the first zone to get your feet wet, before heading down to Valkurm Dunes to get your morale crushed, the journey for which would prepare you for the even harder trip to Jeuno. If you stuck with it after several crushing defeats in the Dunes, then it was off to Jeuno, at the time the main hub of the game, where you really started to learn, about the game from other players, unlocked new spells, weapons, armor, accessories, and skills, and of course your chocobo. The game started to open up for you at that point, and then you had your first really difficult farming test to get your keys to Kazham so you could take your first airship ride to be able to contiune leveling. The best part about it was the subscription, the community, and the difficulty that required you to know your job, not goof around, and not be an a-hole culled the population, so by the time you reached level 35 toxic players, and bad players were not to be found. This is mainly why the Dunes had such a bad reputation later on, because you had a mix of players who were just beginning, and a players who had already been through the grinder, and didn't have any patience for the newbies. This is also what killed the game too, but it has gotten a lot easier for new players now, especially with trusts, but you will still need a group to do the hardest content like Dynamis (D), and Geas Fete. Pretty sure I didn't spell that right.

For me the best part about the game is the amount of work you are required to put in to obtain the other jobs the game has to offer. The storylines behind unlocking summoner, blue mage, beastmaster and puppetmaster puts it ahead of FFXIV in my book. Having the trusts kind of puts the game in easy mode, I was never afraid of taking on incredibly or very tough mobs as long as I had the 5 extra trusts to enter into battle against them.

I really appreciate this video. Yes, one of FFXI's biggest issues is its introductory cutscenes for every expansion without any context. Welcome to the wonderful world of Vana'diel! prepare urself for a very long journey! First off: story structure in FF11 can be quite messy since you can practically start unlocking each story expansions even without realizing & one can do them in any order they feel like it. Another thing is that unlike FF14 where main story starter locks you in one nation story, in here u can do all 3 of them albeit awkward story flow since you'll ends up fighting same main baddie with similar narratives on each nation's mission 5, thankfully only for base game stories, from there has like 4 continuality with either advancing to each nation's self respective stories up to mission 9 or going to 1st expansion Zilart which acts as continuation from main baddie on mission 5 on dealing with true main baddie. Other than that, other expansions & addons has their own contained stories unrelated to base game story, with everything ties down to previous last expansion: Rhapsodies, which I saw u unlocked by accident. & its progression will requires you to advance stories on previous expansions to certain degree. Unlike FF14 where one literally pampered by the richness of ingame guides & hardly need online guides, FF11 are very lacking on that department & thus making majority relies on online guides such as ffxiclopedia & bg-wiki. & i'll be honest: there's just way too much to track in ff11 & can easily gets u lost/confused. Anyways, for the last decade, this game has been nicely providing retired players with free login campaigns which usually happens every 3 months with around 2 weeks duration of free logins & that's pretty much how I enjoyed every released new episodes of expansions, which atm has another ongoing called Voracious Resurgence, tho i think this one requires finishing all of previous expansions stories, unlike Vana'diel which only requires small progressions of previous expansions. Relics in FF11 are unlike FF14 which ends up as glamour joke, here they actually evolves furthermore & became huge importance especially for tacking endgame stuff on FF11, & thus requires huge investment on effort/time/gil where making just one to its final form would cost hundreds of million gils. back on essentials: aside from trusts, need to unlock mount rides fast coz area maps here are huge, along with unlocking home points & survival guides which is your basic teleport options. Also, unlock 4th expansion - wings of the goddess the soonest so that u can unlock dancer to be your subjob which basically gives u free sneak/invisible, huge needs to get past high level mobs. Don't forget that aside from level grinding, u'll require to do weapon/magic skill grinding, which is main importance to have your attack misses. Fortunately they shared across other jobs, though each job has their own mastery over certain type of weapon/magic, like daggers for thief/dancer or swords for paladin/red mage/blue mage or black/dark magic for black mage/dark knight & so on. Reasons for jobs can wield multi-weapon/magic for chain attacks, mostly used starting from early endgame stuff. Unfortunate thing for certain jobs like mages or bard is that one need to farm/buy spells & read it in order to use them, which would be quite costly, hence it's quite advice-able for new players to start as simple jobs like warrior/monk/thiefs, not to mention inventory became huge scarcity fast due to needing to store yet-unlearnable spells due to not high level enough. This post already quite long so i'll stop here. check guides mentioned above to learn mor & enjoy FF11! :D

You didn't comment on it, so if you were unaware the character that appears in the opening cutscene of Rhapsodies of Vana'diel is the same as the npc that is a part of The Maiden's Rhapsody xiv event that happened in 2015 and again in 2022. Also the titles of the expansions is a bit misleading on the login screen. There are 5 actual, big expansions: Rise of the Zilart, Chains of Promathia, Treasures of Aht Urhgan, Wings of the Goddess and Seekers of Adoulin. The other titles are considered add-ons; more like mini stories disconnected from the msq. I haven't played in a long while, so I'm glad to see the qol updates to make leveling more bearable. Also going forward be sure to look into macros. Unlike in XIV, the expectation was to be swapping gear in and out during combat. It's less important in the early game, but in particular I remember thief having sneak attack/trick attack gear that you're meant to swap to for that job ability only and then swap to higher damage gear for weaponskills and whatnot. Black Mage I remember had different gear sets for each type of spell (elemental, dark, enfeeble) and even more specific gear for weather/day/moon phase. Don't let that scare you though, most jobs are more straight forward with it. The game can be a lot of fun, especially if you have friends to go along with you. I wish you luck in your journey!

@@NoPurposeIndie To elaborate on the gear swapping bit: For melee classes gear sets generally fall into 3-4 broad categories: TP build Weapon Skill Ability Specific (may be several of these) Damage Mitigation TP build sets focus on accuracy, haste, double attack (triple or quadruple if you have the gear?) and... I forget the ability name but enhanced TP gain its one of samurai's main passives but can also be found on gear. Slight aside at least when I played accuracy capped at like 95% so you always had a 5% chance to miss no matter what (I kind of hope they changed that though) Weapon Skill - usually focused on raw stats as most weapon skills have stat based modifiers (though near as I understand many weapon skills got revamped so this may not be so true anymore) and not all of those modifiers are apparent... there are a couple of dagger weapon skills that are dex/chr based and some that are INT based. Moreover there are a ton of gear pieces that can effect weapon skills (elemental gorgets to name one) outside of base stats, you would also stack double attack as it could add more damage to the attack. Ability specific - there are pieces that enhance class specific skills, like the artifact helmet and the AF2 gloves for samurai's meditation, you would swap these in immediately before performing meditate. Another example of ability specific: Sneak Attack, Trick Attack - Sneak attack adds 1 base damage for every dex, trick 1 base for every agility, as long as you meet their conditions (sneak being behind the monster, trick being behind a player) sneak attack being a guaranteed crit, trick not so much but if you can meet both their conditions they can be stacked AND stacked with a weapon skill. Damage Mitigation - physical/magical damage reduction% gear and heavy defense items ect. 11 is a bit crazy as it doesn't lock your gear set while engaged to further illustrate how crazy I can explain a bit of my limited understanding of casting sets: Precast Casting PreCompletion Precast - Stack haste and Fast cast, haste lowers spell cool down where as fast cast lowers time to cast and spell cool down thereby letting you repeat specific spells more often (just like job abilities high level spells have long cool downs) IMEDIATLY after you start casting you swap to your casting - generally stack spell interruption gear, the higher your spell interruption rate is, the higher % casting you can be at and not worry about getting interrupted. Finally forget at what % but a spell is basically guarantied to go off before say like 80% which is when you would swap in Elemental staffs (passive 20% damage increase to same element spells) Magic attack bonus and intelligence gear (and any other magic damage enhancing gear) there was/were (maybe still are) 3rd party programs that help you manage gear swaps so all you need to do is "create" a set and it will auto swap based on what weapon skill or spell you start casting.

One thing the current game lacks was the sense of dread a player faced when entering an area where they are a lower level than the monsters inhabiting the zone. I remember fondly the fear I experienced trying to run through Arrapago Reef in the level 75 capped era to get access to Ilrusi Atoll staging point. I died a couple times trying to avoid being spotted on the ship to get the broken automaton to unlock puppetmaster as a level 30 character. FFXIV doesn't give players the same feelings, you die, get raised and can be healed to almost full health with no weakness and can jump back into the fight. Only downside is the damage done to your armor.

Having played XI from NA release to now, I always do enjoy watching people decide to try it out. You're not wrong to think that combat at the start is slow and clunky, and it never really stops being clunky, but it does stop being as slow as you start getting haste buffs and more abilities to actually use. I do agree that the MSQ-esque storyline introductions are very much unevenly scattered and not kind to the new player experience. If you do Rhapsodies of Vana'diel before completing all the missions in the game before it, you just miss out on a lot of background that the older players do have. Rhapsodies was always made as a "last hurrah to tie all your favorite characters in the story into one grand adventure" type epilogue mission set, so allowing you to access starting at level 10 will just throw new players into the deep end of the pool. Abyssea, A Crystalline Prophecy, A Shantotto's Ascension, and A Moogle Kupo'de'tat don't do much better in that regard. While it doesn't really do anything for me specifically, I was glad to see that they put in some sort of expansion starting cutscene delay option for the new players that know to take advantage of it. Glad to see another person that tried out FFXI and got past the PlayOnline boss and enjoyed XI at least a little bit. I understand it's an ancient game that does the opposite of hand holding, as it was built and designed with the expectation and requirement of players helping each other out throughout the whole game, and that just pushes away potential players these days. If you weren't around for the golden days of XI, it's hard to find a reason to stick to it. It's worth it though. The best stuff in FFXI take a lot of work to get, but when you get it, the feeling of accomplishment is strong, and I think that and a few friends are why I've stuck with the game so long.

Another old school XI player here! Glad you enjoyed it the game overall, even if there were a few detractors. lol I actually quit before several of these QoL changes were put in, so it was strange seeing them. xD The old exp was grinding to lvl 10-11, praying you'd make it safe to Valkurm Dunes and get a group invite. From there on, you'd literally spend HOURS with these people, grinding out your levels. Which sounds boring (barring the occasional bit of chaos), but you really got to know people that way. It became less about the combat and more about hanging out with your new friends while also getting your xp. In fact, I have friends that I made back then that I STILL talk to today. :D I got the itch and found a free server a couple years back that runs the older content the way it was back then. It was a lot of fun, going back through, but also making new friends.

Being a long time FFXI player, i wana say the one thing I don't like with it, ESPECIALLY at release, is that there isn't even hints where your supposed to go for many missions and quests. Everyone I knew almost had to get that Bradley game book as wasn't much for online help at release. The Journal in game was almost worthless at that time. I think they updated wording on many journals and newer content has much better hints of what/where/whom to go see ect... Since release though, they've modified a lot to make much easier on new players, but this is one game that doesn't hold your hand. I still play it, though took a good 6 year break. Original game would take you months to get your character leveled up just too 75 which was old cap. Modern game, you can get PL all way 99 in only couple hours if you've gotten the limit break quests done. Everything in 11 is meant to be a team effort, which is why trust system was introduced. With decline in players, it was getting to hard for low level and new players to get parties. That trust system was meant to make up for it, but not 100% replace. End game content they are iffy if can really use them efficiently. If ya keep going in this game, I realize this is over year since you put this out, but look into Windower. It's now allowed by 11 makers, jsut don't talk about it in game much. You can get some quality of life enhancing addons/mods and even some nice beautiful graphical fixes/upgrades. Gearswap is the biggest in my opinion, it fixes issues with gear changing and optimizes the speed gear can be changed for high level content. BUT, it does take a bit out game tweeking to set things up for each job class. Some jobs almost need it to actually bring full power of the class out due to how much gear swapping is needed.

"the open world is dangerous" which is one of the many things that make this MMO more alive and better than FFXIV. Also Trusts were the deciding factor to play? Well Trusts are new there was a time when they didnt exist and you had to rely on making friends and finding other players to accomplish even the most "mundane" of tasks or youd get wrecked in the open world (another reason this is better than 14.... whats the point of an MMO if I can just do everything by myself?) of course this is back when the games population was big enough to achieve that.. once the game got older and the population dropped signifigantly. It was obvious that finding ppl to play with especially for new players would be impossible and thus progressing would be impossible... hence the Trust system was born
@Zadamanim
Жыл бұрын
As a 14 player, the reason so much of it can be solo'd is because of the skill gap between veteran and new players. The harder content is designed for groups of players, but its capped at a certain number. If someone among your ranks likes to eat glue and doesnt read their tooltips, that becomes a major roadblock, worse than the content itself. So the game has tons of single player content for you to practice on before letting you do the serious multiplayer content. In ff11 however, there is no limit to how many players you can bring with you, and the game is largely based around auto attacking which makes the skill gap nowhere near as much of an issue. I do wish that it would be easier to play the ff14 MSQ with friends though.

@@DuoMaxwell007 Job balance has nothing to do with skill. Even in ff14 when PLD was really underpowered at the launch of endwalker, people didnt want PLD on their team cuz even if you played perfectly it wouldn't be as good as having any other tank.

@Zadamanim

@@DuoMaxwell007 It was a uniquely bad situation at the launch of Endwalker. The DPS checks were higher than they normally are, and the dev team blamed the fact they delayed releasing savage by 2 weeks to give people time to do the normal mode content first. This delay meant their team had more time to practice the boss and kill it faster, and these kill times are what they use to decide the dps checks needed to beat the bosses. The dps check in the week 1 gear for p8s's door boss was so tight that people were turning down pld and mch because they had the lowest dps. I didn't really find it game-breaking or anything, but week 1 raiders / streamers were butthurt about the dps checks. Since then, pld got buffed several times followed by a major rework, to bring it more in line with the other tanks in terms of burst damage and mitigation. Mch got damage buffs as well as disassemble, a debuff which reduces a boss's damage output.

When I played FF11 on release on my PS2, and then later on my first gaming PC, the majority of the stuff and experience you had did not exist. You could maybe get lvl 1-6 solo, but after that the game *required* you to be in a party with others. There was no trust system in place, only other players. you had to purchase every spell, but they cost so much that it was common to find healers that did not have Cure II in the Gobbie Train zone. Everyone had begged or borrowed to get Raise first. Also, deleveling. I remember getting lvl 14 six separate times on one class because of said Gobbie Trains, because when you died, you would lose exp and lose the level you just got. You would also have people in town casting portals to the warp points so you did not have to walk out there too, since chocobos were not introduced as a ride option until the lvl 30 area, and even then, they were point to point rides, not something you controlled, other then getting off.
@NoPurposeIndie

Thank you for sharing your experience ^^ In current day FF11, I expected deleveling to still be an issue but I was at level 37, died a few times and haven't deleveled once ^^ It defo reduces that hardcore intensity, but it clearly saves a lot of time 🤘 Deleveling may still come into play soon, I just haven't come across it yet :o

FFXI is all about the friends you made along the way, so playing with another person was a good choice. An MMO without being in contact with other people for most of your leveling is kinda sad imo. Especially one designed to be based on teamwork as FFXI. There should be an instruction manual somewhere in the menu and it’s at least a bit less clunky once you learn how to use macros properly. The players have done their best to replicate a bunch of 14’s UI if you ever truly get frustrated. (Hot bars and a crossbar among other things, but SE has the same policy on 3rd party tools as in FFXIV, so streaming those would not be a good idea even if SE mostly doesn’t care until you use stuff that clearly crosses into the “this is just cheating” line) The gameplay itself does get faster as you level thanks to there being more sources of haste and other stats. Not quite ffxiv’s speed, but close enough that I immediately write off anyone saying FFXI is slow as not knowing what they’re talking about.

The past few days (besides the 3rd person camera being janky and not working, probably because of the high framerate). I gave FFXI a go and shockingly I am getting a good vibe with the game. Yeah I look at FFXIV and I prefer that because it's more modern, but there is a certain charm that I do actually like with the game. For starters it took me awhile to figure out the keyboard buttons to do anything, including opening the menu but you do get use to it. I love that there is no quest markers on heads, and you have to manually look for things which I really do like. I wouldn't main FFXI but it's definitely I game I can play from time to time. And yes I did pick the catgirl thief.

This looks way friendlier than back in the day. I remember how dangerous it was to run to the leveling zones where you needed a party to level up. I don't even remember any story. I am shocked that there is more story and a trust system. Wish i had that back then, i might've played the game more. Instead i stopped. The dangerous running and the experience loss on death made it a deal breaker for me.

FFXI is nowhere near as grindy as it used to be. But even now it's way tougher than FFXIV. The fight mechanics are slower in XI but overall it's far, far deeper in it's gameplay. In XIV you get handed gear on a plate as you progress through the msq. Not so in XI. You do get some, but it's up to you to collect gear sets. Yes, sets (plural). Not so important in levelling (but you should still macro in some items) but certainly in endgame you have sets for each and every spell, action, job ability you do. If not you are playing gimp. It's not uncommon for a RDM or BLU to have two full wardrobes of gear (that's 160 pieces) to play the job fully. They are two different games completely. XIV is more of a casual, fast paced ARPG. XI is all about collecting the gear and the dopamine of getting rare drops.

Ah the early game experience of "non-consentual cutscenes" 😂 Don't worry too much about expansion order, but there is an order. The expansions are also "side content" and "main content". Base game, Rise of the Zilart, Chains of Promothea, Treasures of Aht Urghan, Seekers of Audolin, Wings of the Goddess, and Rhapsodies of Vana'diel are "Main story". Everything else is somewhat contained side content. Rhapsodies ties everything from base game to Seekers together, with Wings being it's own thing. It's nice to play it in chronological order but not necessarily required. If you follow the Rhapsodies questline you'll basically be led through the game as the story intended. It's slow and somewhat meh in the beginning but REALLY finds it's stride in Chains and just flies from there.

@@NoPurposeIndie really? monsters still chase full zone? they added a mechanic at one point that caused monsters to despawn after traveling a certain distance, that in of itself did wonders to lowering danger levels of many areas. I wonder if they reverted it? I think it was less of a safety measure and more intended to stop SMN power leveling... There was a specific zone with a wide range of levels of enemies, you could form a party with 4-5 summoners with the help of 1 outside source, generally a paladin or a red mage (strong survivability) they would pull the entire zone. Take their mass hoarde of monsters to where the SMN party was (usually with 1 extra to leech/level sync off of, ask me if you need to know what level sync is) Each SMN would then sequentially use their Astral Flow (smn 2 hour) and en mass wipe out hundereds of monsters, you would get like EXP chain 200, but because the game couldn't handle that much info at once, you'd some times see EXP chain 100 before 10 (I actually participated in one of these a few times, was kind of fun wiping out so many monsters at once) You could go from level 15 to level 50+ in minutes with this method, though the setup, namely the puller (RDM/PLD) would take a while as they aggro'd nearly the entire zone.

FFXI was the highest grossing FF game for the company and has some of the best storylines and fun content out of most FF games. It did many things as a first before XIV was even a thought. It never got the recognition it deserved and now thru its old age its being neglected by SE and tarnished by supposed fans of final fantasy and ex-jaded players. I have been playing for almost 20 years and its still the best game I've ever played, I love it so much. From the art, the story, the care and detail behind the jobs and lore. I wish I could do something to help and force SE to care about this game again. The game itself isn't even expensive, its like 15 bucks for a month when most sub services are charging 20~30 dollars+ a month and literally everyone and their grandma has sub based services now like Netflix. So lets not pretend that monthly fees are uncommon and annoying when everyone puts up with them so the company can maintain and update the product. I feel the biggest detriment that lead to this is that SE themselves barely advertised XI and still to this day they act like they are a little ashamed of XI. They don't put it on any business reports, they don't talk about it, even when XIV shut down sales for their expansion they didn't even bother to say "hey, we have this other MMO you can try while you wait." Just a real shame, but nice video! I was expecting you to be on some derpy private server in all honesty.

It's funny. I've been playing 11 for a year and a half now on a fresh account since i lost my old one and every person i talk to say "wait, thats still going?" and then find it even more baffling that TVR is being added and its getting legit content.

It definitely can be 😂 Though my heavy Final Fantasy bias carries me through it 🤘🥳
