I’m so glad it is helpful! Because the video is a little old now it doesn’t include a few changes that were made. - for ground actions, you can press on the skill action instead of using the confirm button. This is a quite nice way to not have to deactivate your triggers. - There is an option to disable soft targeting and only having hard targets in Character Configuration. I don’t personally recommend this for those who play Healer as main (especially astrologian), but it can be helpful for people who have no intention of maining those jobs - The game also added auto-targeting of a nearby add in front of you if you don’t already have a target. This can be helpful in fates with lots of monsters and in dungeons to target enemies in mob packs as they die, as well as raids to target the boss as soon as it become targetable after a phase when it wasn’t. However it can be frustrating in PVP where it can end up accidentally wasting LB and other cooldowns on a target you didn’t intend if your previous one died, or in Eureka (especially when starting out) accidentally pulling unintended mobs that could kill you.

I don't tank too often tbh, but I've certainly done a few dungeons and trials here and there. I've found in dungeons, using bumper targeting to just target the nearest trash and then using AOE to grab aggro wasn't too bad. Then enmity targeting for anything that might have slipped by and aggroed the healer.

Great video still after 2 years! I have always played controller and organically have picked up a lot of this during the 8 years I played. The extra 4 targetting formats using L1+X etc was good as havent used that n think I can def use. The one thing not here is party list prioritising, the default is your party list is you and then tank, healer dps. I have it so its dps first when I play DRG as using dragons eye I want to access dps peeps and dont like pressing up to start soft targetting. One thing I wish they would do is let us prioritise melee dps at top of list....right now its kinda random n would make it so much faster if we could prioritise job types in party list for ease of ability use when targeting.
@Squintina
2 жыл бұрын
Although I didn't put party ordering, I did mention it in some of the job videos (I remember black mage definitely had it mentioned, potentially dragoon too but not sure). I'm planning on remaking this video to have a less boring format anyway, plus there are many other things I didn't include in this video (that exist in the text guide) www.akhmorning.com/resources/controller-guide/controller-targeting/#focus-targeting But I also have mine customized. Tank: Tank, Healer, DPS. Tank first so quick access to other tank for swaps/single target mitigation. Healer: Tank, DPS, healer. Tank first for quick adlos/benison. Healer last for quick d-pad up if cohealer needs rez/emergency healing. DPS: DPS, Healer, Tank. DPS first for dragoon tether. Tank last for easy d-pad up melee range aetherial manipulation in DF where having a melee DPS isn't guaranteed. As far as the order for the DPS, that's not random. Melee by default is first, and yes it's customizable. If you go to Character Config -> UI settings -> Party List, and click on "Role Sort Settings", go to DPS tab, you can see the exact order it sorts in. I do see that on mine Reaper, the new melee, isn't placed properly, but that might be that it doesn't place it properly if a person ever changed the party list ordering before, which I did as I wanted Samurai first and BLM last, for AST card reasons. If for some reason your party didn't sort, you can do /psort macro to force it to sort. A video just on this might be a good idea, as it's not controller specific, though controller players do benefit the most from it.

You might snicker at this, but it was always too chaotic to read the info box during fights on how to control the ground targeting. I think I tried it once, placed the target too far away, got stuck with the placement yet learned that it moved with the camera; so, whenever I needed to target something close, I would pan the camera to above my characters head, look at the ground and launch the attack or shield literally in my blind spot while praying for the best results lol. I'm also healer main post HW content already, and it was TODAY O'CLOCK that I learned the proper way. I guess I'll go back to better positioning it.

@Squintina
2 жыл бұрын
Sadly sheathing/unsheathing (and sometimes zoning) are pretty much the only ways. So it's useful to know that L1 + R1 is a quick way to do that. What I also do is I reserve one of my filters for what I expect to be in "default". In my case I put it in L1 + Circle, so that way it's like I'm 'canceling' my filter. So really I only have 3 filters since circle has to be default.

I've recently moved over to a controller. Is it a standard practice to use /assist and /target ? Or is it done differently?
@Squintina
3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't really say there's anything 'standard', everyone is a bit different. I would say play around and find out what fits you. (But do try to stay away from /action or /ac macros if possible, due to the queuing loss, unless it's a ground targeting macro or for Sprint, since neither will have a queue loss) Personally I use this: /target /focustarget /target /psort which will make a focus target if there isn't one, and if there is one it will target its target. I mostly use this on the boss to quickly target the MT, but it can also be used on a tank to assist. I put mine into Macro #98 for my Left click-in (L3) In pvp I have used the next macro in the past, though I don't really use it too much anymore, instead using filter targeting for Signs. /target /facetarget /micon "Attack1" enemysign
@StraightcheD
3 жыл бұрын
@@Squintina Very detailed, thank you. So focus target is really just used for monitoring than targeting. What do you do when you want to pick the same target as your MT? (Oh wait, that macro doubles as an assist if you pick the MT)
@Squintina
3 жыл бұрын
@@StraightcheD So if i make my focus target the boss, then my macro goes to MT (when I'm healer). If I make the focus the tank, then it does an assist (when I'm dps). Otherwise, if I don't use the macro, I just make use of the Enmity list targeting. Most of the content in the game is 1 boss anyway, and when you have multiple enemies you're usually AOEing and not focusing down one monster. The few times you might is when you have 2-3 targets, so it's not so bad to just pick them out manually.
@StraightcheD
3 жыл бұрын
@@Squintina Ahh yes, AoE being the norm with multiple critters even at relatively lower level now, and with tanks holding aggro more easily, assisting the MT is less of an issue. Sadly that is the only way. I would recommend either 1) having one of those filters do the same things as what the unsheathe filter does or 2) Making sure your custom filters have all the types of targets you might want, even if none of those filters are identical to the unsheathe filter.

If you check out the tab targeting section (which does not use the d-pad), I do go over the difference between Target Type 1 and Target Type 2. Generally, Type 2 will lead to better tab targeting as long as you place your camera appropriately. Beyond that, and I really should make a pvp-specific targeting video, a lot of players in pvp use macros. While in PVE macros are considered bad, because of the loss of action queuing, and yes action queuing loss still happens for macros in PVP, there is a drastic difference. In PVE, fights are predictable and targets are few so that loss does not generally come with a net gain. But in PVP, the time lost from not having action queuing (which is < 1 second) is far outweighed by the time gained from not fumbling with targeting. While I don't have examples for each job, here are some examples I do have: Scholar "Broil Nearest" (useful for just targeting ANYONE, regardless of who it is, especially in FL, so you can get that limit break gauge going) /tenemy /pvpac "Broil IV" /micon "Broil IV" pvpaction "Broil" macro - Pick a party member and you'll attack their target, useful for organizing kills. Will also act like a normal Broil if you pick a target yourself. /pvpac "Broil IV" /pvpac "Broil IV" /micon "Broil IV" pvpaction Machinist "Place my turret near my target" /pvpac "Bishop Autoturret" /pvpac "Bishop Autoturret" /pvpac "Bishop Autoturret" /pvpac "Bishop Autoturret" /pvpac "Bishop Autoturret" /pvpac "Bishop Autoturret" /micon "Bishop Autoturret" pvpaction

How do you make sure that when you're casting or using a weaponskill and the boss moves in a way that interrupts your line of sight that you don't get interrupted? I know that for PC players they can hold down the mouse while casting or attacking to ensure their spells and weaponskills go off no matter what. For example if I'm casting a spell as BLM and the boss jumps from east to the middle of the arena, my cast is cancelled if my character was positioned in a way that makes the boss 'jump over' me (example: Eden Titan jumping to opposite side of the arena really quickly). Same thing happens when I'm a melee. I can't hit enemies in dungeons when the tank is still pulling and moving them even though I'm in melee range. My weaponskills animation would stop halfway along with my GCDs because they're interrupted as a result of that. It's completely frustrating. Is there a PS4/controller equivalent of holding down a mouse button so that you dont get interrupted by sudden and ongoing enemy/boss movements? I can't seem to find any info about that anywhere. Just to add, I'm using Legacy controls and I have auto face target enabled so I don't know why I'm still having issues.
@Squintina
4 жыл бұрын
What you're describing isn't specific to controller, it's just specific to Legacy. If you get LOSed you're LOSed regardless of whether it's on controller or m/kb (and a lot of m/kb players play on Legacy, I would even say most - not all but most - raiders do). This is just about getting more experience to position yourself and anticipate movement. Even on mouse, if you're on Legacy, your character will not move where it's facing by holding down any clicks. For dungeon pulls you're probably going to use AOEs and a lot of them, not all, but a lot of them are going to be point blank which means they don't need you to face a target. For melee, If you're in a dungeon and a tank is pulling mobs, you should be able to stay near the tank to hit the mobs and stay within melee range. Not only that but since they don't have casts (for the most part), you can just move yourself while you hit your buttons via the movement analog stick. Most mobs are going to be following the tank so positioning yourself so that you're facing a mob (it doesn't have to face you back) shouldn't be difficult as long as you move. So in that case it would be your left stick, not your camera stick, that would help you the most. If you really wanted to, you could play controller on Standard instead of Legacy. Just means if you want to run backwards, instead of pressing down (which would be slow), you'd press Left on both analogs at the same time (or right on both at the same time), then let go of the camera stick while keeping the movement stick active. That allows you to walk 'back" by essentially walking left/right by just switching your camera POV.

I can’t use the dpad due to limited dexterity. Trouble is, I want to be a healer class. Do I have any viable options (before I invest my time in this game)?
@Squintina
3 жыл бұрын
Hmm that's a n excellent question. When it comes to targeting enemies, bumper targeting would be your best option. The problem is definitely healing your party (you can ignore your alliance if necessary). Beyond the d-pad, here are the various way you can target party members: -Controller with paddles mapped to dpad up/down. If paddles are an option for your mobility. I don't know if the PS4 has any, but for PC the Xbox Elite controller would be an option. - Touchpad (like a mouse). Touchpad functionality is difficult to get working on PC, so you'd want to play on PS4/PS5. However, using the touchpad can be finicky, so that will depend on your mobility. - Virtual mouse. If you can access L1 and R3. It controls a mouse using the camera stick, so you can still dodge with the movement stick while virtual mouse mode is active. - Targeting macros. How viable will depend on the job you play. If you have issues with the d-pad, that also means you're missing half of your crossbar for placing actions. This means you'll be using more crossbars. To then have to use even more in order to use 8 targeting macros (one for each party member as there is no macro to go up/down the list) is a lot of extra space to account for when you're already dealing with limited space. It can work with low-action jobs like white mage, or dancer/machinist if you're a dps. - Foot pedals. If you're playing on PC (I really don't know if PS4 supports USB foot pedals), this is actually your best option. You can map these foot pedals to key on your keyboard, and then in the Keybinds menu bind those keys to the controller d-pad. After all, the game lets you use both "keyboard" and controller at the same time. This would allow you to use your feet for targeting and for accessing the other half of the cross hotbar. If your feet have good mobility, this would be my recommendation. - Third Party Custom Bindings. (requires using either the steam or SE PC version). FF14 doesn't let you make a huge amount of customization when it comes to the controller's basic button configuration. However, if you are on PC, you can use Steam API (or Antimicro) to create custom bindings. For example, you could use R1 + an analog stick to simulate the d-pad. I do have a video where I do something like this for letting a character strafe.

So how the hell does this game not have a party target button while I have my skills toggled for use? Is that not immensely helpful for healers in general? Why am I not able to just, like, hold L1 and hit my Dpad to target party members quickly? Is that not a thing? Because the internet says it is but apparently that isn't a thing on PC if it is a thing on Console.
@Squintina
4 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I didn't get an e-mail notification for this question; I'm looking into why I'm getting e-mails for some comments but not others. No, there isn't a way to do party targeting while a hotbar is active because the d-pad is used for the hotbar. This is the same for PC and console (there are 0 differences in how targeting works, at least not without doing some extra configurations which are available only for PC so if anything PC controller players actually have more choices in targeting if they're willing to get a little creative with their set ups). I own FF14 on both PC and PS4. By default, L1+d-pad is for alliance members and you should still not have the hotbar active. To be honest, I haven't had much of an issue with it and I'm a healer main. You don't need to keep holding your bar during casts. You can start the cast and immediately let go of the trigger (go ahead and try: have nothing targeted, start casting cure and immediately let go of the trigger and then press the d-pad). So I often pick my next target, if I need to switch party targets, during the cast/animation. That's how I do AST cards as well, which I weave before the next spell too. Being confident that you pressed something and letting it happen while you immediately start picking your next target is key to reducing clipping for weaves as well. I do this several times in the "Battle Flow" video, though not with targeting, but the concept is the same. kzitem.info/news/bejne/rah8uo1rbZpoYHo (loads to 5:38) and then again around 7:40 in that video.

@Squintina
Жыл бұрын
Filter settings are only for filter targeting which is using left and right d-pad. There is no way to change how X targeting works. However X targeting only happens if you have no target already. If you have a target and it’s an enemy it’ll do auto attack, if it’s an NPC it’ll try to interact, and if it’s yourself or another friendly player it’ll do nothing (except for Hard targeting if that person was a soft target)

@Squintina
Жыл бұрын
I would suggest for your mother to learn bumper targeting. This is in my opinion a more natural method of targeting as you do it with hotbars activated, which you would do when using actions anyway. So if she presses X and ends up on an NPC, she doesnt have to worry about it - she can get ready to attack and just press that bumper first. I am surprised that this is an issue though as most duties don’t have non-enemy NPCs aside from treasure chests. And enemies would be more likely to be closer. Also by default, if no target exists and an enemy attacks, the game will auto target that. So…what type of content is she doing where this keeps happening?
@SirkSirk
Жыл бұрын
@@Squintina it's the msq duties that you have to do solo. She failed about 3 times so I remoted into her ps and adjusted everything I could. I don't have this problem when npcs are in sight and I tried to mirror the setting but to no avail. I tried the duty as well and can see why she is struggling with that. I'll test out the bumper idea but I personally have no issues pressing x and having it select an enemy even if a duty specific npc is closer. As long as an enemy is on screen it will always prioritize the enemy over the npc. Hers doesn't, no priority, just whatever is closer/line of sight.
@Squintina
Жыл бұрын
Are you completely sure she’s not ending up in a filter? Because the X targeting is not customizable at all and enemies should be prioritized. The behavior you’re describing sounds far more like d-pad targeting. But anyway, bumper targeting is only for enemies so that’ll fix it real quick. If you want to send me screenshots of her settings to my Twitter (@thesquintina), I certainly can look to see if I can figure it out, but likely it’s probably better to just learn other targeting methods.

Hi there. Let's apply the process of deduction for figuring out what's going on. First let's figure out the possible ways you can be targeting a "member" (I'll assume that to be party member and not alliance). 1 - Using d-pad up/down by itself 2 - Using d-pad left/right by itself while having a custom filter activated 3 - Turning on the virtual mouse and clicking on them. 4 - A macro you have on #98 and #99. This would most likely always go the same player (ex: always the tank, etc..). 5 - You are using a PS4 with touchpad controls and accidentally using the always-on virtual touchpad If it was #3 and #4, you'd be quite aware what just happened, so realistically that's probably not what you did. So when it comes to accidents you're not sure of, #1, 2, and 5 are the most likely possibilities #1 and #2: That means in both reasonable possibilities you are using the d-pad without a hotbar activator. What that tells me is that you might have times when you accidentally try to do your hotbar activator + d-pad but might be letting go! Just practice keeping it pushed down more. Also check that there isn't an issue with your controller's triggers (or bumpers if you switched them from the default setup) #5: You can disable touchpad behavior. I do forget where that is since I play on PC more often than on PS4 (those settings don't exist on the PC version at all). Personally the few times I play on PS4, I have that turned off so that the only time it does touchpad is when I turn on the virtual mouse manually, or if I press it in (for the HUD select button)
