We've talked about frame data, offensive techniques like frametraps, defensive techniques like Delay-Techs - as well as the importance of having layers to our offense. Now we need to put it all together.
My checklist when picking up a new character changes from game to game but overall:
1. Fastest normal (to use when on defense)
2. Poke(s) to use in Neutral
3. Short combo I can do consistently (ideally with a plan for okizeme after)
4. Reliable anti-air for different ranges
5. Approach tool(s)
Different games may not have very strong aerial options so anti-airs may not be as important.
Some games may have universal defensive options I can utilize in addition to my fastest normal/invincible reversal (Parry/Push-Block/Combo-Breaker). Tag fighters or Vs games may have different assists where I need to keep in mind what assist to pick and when to use it.
The goal is to have the tools necessary for every stage of the game-
- Have options ready for when you are in Neutral (all 3 pillars)
- As well as for when you are on offense, be it blockstrings, doing a combo off a hit, or pressuring your opponent after a knockdown
- Arguably most importantly, having your options ready for when you are on the back foot and have to defend, what is your fastest normal when you need to abare, do you have an invincible reversal? are you able to parry, push-block, or otherwise stop your opponent's pressure and reset to Neutral? can you sidestep or duck or perform movement to evade?
