Great idea to base the 124 on the MX5. Nobody is that interested in the chassis underpinnings, rather the look and finish. Italian style, Japanese body and electrics - ideal.

I've owned one for a little over a year. If you are going to buy one get an Abarth. It's not an MX-5. It's an Italian roadster designed by Fiat and built on the MX-5 platform. I give Fiat a lot of credit for teaming with Mazda on this car. It's beautiful, sexy and it performs. Personally, I wouldn't make comments until you drive one. On second thought, don't drive one unless you are ready to buy one. Once you get a taste you will want one, bad.

disagree. i personally don't care for those 6 sets of lights and 2 grills. i know it's supposed to be a 'spider'' bu it just looks...meh. i just covered the lower front of the new 124 and it looked soo much better - almost like a porsche. why couldn't they go for that look instead? get rid of the lower lights, merge both grills, and you've got a good looking car. it's not even an homage either since the old 124 didn't look anything like this (the old one is very pretty). mx-5 nd looks much better imho, and i prefer the naturally aspirated engine, newer gearbox, and the twitchy, raw nature of it's handling. other than that the cars are identical.

Saying that Fiat just used a Mazda MX5 body is unfair. Both companies designed the body and driveline together to build almost similar cars.. that I agree with. But not that Fiat just tagged on a badge.
@miskatonic6210

*lol* No, they didn't. The car was developed by Mazda. The whole philosophy is Mazda. They didn't develop anything together. Mazda designed the car, so somehow the Fiat engine would fit in. But the whole concept was build around the small Mazda engine which is a perfect fit with optimal weight distribution. The car wasn't developed by Fiat and it's not build by Fiat.

Brit reviews always have this undertone of barely concealed contempt for any auto offering from Italy (and French cars too, sometimes) that I find kind of insulting, and I'm not even italian. I saw a review by Tiff Needall who had his eyes permanently rolling in his head as he discussed how crap he thought the italian car he was reviewing was. Can't they tone down the snark a bit ?? I get the impression that Brits think that only the Germans can build proper cars so why does anyone else even bother trying ?..lolz.

Just got a 124 Spider, a 2017, under 7000M on the clock. Huge fun on these Norfolk roads, but unsurprisingly needs more controlling than my little Polo turbo. Love it, though. The electrics are well-designed and modern spec in this range-topping version. I like the central joystick-of-all-trades, to navigate the features. The plastic trim mentioned doesn't flap around in mine, and keeping the turbo in optimum acceleration mode becomes second nature. Va-va-voom!

You Brits and the whole "cheap-looking plastics" crap. Are you kidding me with this? It's a freakin' sun visor. And it's a cheap car. You're going to get cheap materials in it. Manage your expectations, people. I mean, am I the only one that finds it a little strange that the nation that can't build a reliable, long-lasting car to save its freakin' auto industry complains about quality of materials? Except whereas Chevy, Honda and Ford put the plastic on the inside where ultimately no one is really going to care as long as the car gets them from A to B, JLR and Volkswagen must put all their plastic in the suspension and drivetrains and electronics where the very function of the vehicle is at stake. Let's be realistic folks -- not even luxury cars can be made ENTIRELY out of unobtainium. There are always going to be plastics if you look hard enough. Hell, even my Volvo has a few hard-touch points I wish it didn't have, and it was a $48k car. You're talking about a Fiat 124 -- a BUDGET sports car from a non-luxury brand. I'm frankly amazed it's as nice as it is. Mazda should be applauded for their efforts, and Fiat the nod for using the best foundation they could ask for for their car.

My point is that it's the same lame complaint every single video. Learn a new tune already. There's going to be plastic on the inside of cars. Get over it already. Also, who's the one hurtling insults here? I had a genuine criticism, and all you did was resort to a sad, overused stereotype. Sounds like you're the one who could stand to have a few more years of school. Go back and reread my original post. I was making a point.

RtDK It may be a budget vehicle in your country, but in Europe it isn't & so needs to be built to a decent standard. Perhaps you are prepared to put up with lower quality, but vehicle purchase is a major expense for most people. It is criticism that has helped raise the quality & reliability of cars - it is the bedrock of what has made the German auto industry so successful. It's what most people want. Cars are designed, manufactured, exported and raced in the UK these days to as high a standard as anywhere else & production numbers are as high as ever too - and better than many fellow European countries. We are also a major car market and as such have the right to make demands as much as anywhere else. Your comments are very outdated in a global market re. our auto industry - international ownership is the norm, or didn't you know that Volvo is Chinese owned & Chrysler is Italian these days? - to name just two examples.
@Lndmk227
8 жыл бұрын
I'm perfectly aware of this. My point, though, is that if Jaguar and VW had invested half of what they did in their interiors, they'd be as reliable as Toyotas and Buicks. I notice that as soon as VW's latest batch of cars came out, the interior quality compared to previous models absolutely plummeted. However, their mechanical reliability sharply rose, from somewhere near dead last to mid-range. VW's sales and German car sales in general were in a free fall here in the States until the reliability finally improved. Jaguar's presence, likewise, is virtually nonexistent here by comparison, and it's because people don't want to have their cars in the shop as often as they're on the road. It's why Jag will never be a major player in the luxury car business here in the US until the quality improves. If they spent any money at all testing out their powertrains and electrical systems and ironed out the bugs, in a few years' time, they could probably get a massive spike in their market share. It's why Cadillac and Volvo have been on the rise the past few years and what makes Lexus so successful. They have nice interior design too, but they don't sacrifice quality elsewhere to attain it. S'all I'm saying. (Chrysler has an excuse cause Daimler-Benz robbed 'em blind and left them treading water.)
@MrTrull1
8 жыл бұрын
RtDK Chrysler has no more "excuse" than any other car company (and why does foreign ownership need excusing?). Rover was stripped of its best bits (Mini, Land Rover) then 'hung out to dry' by a German company (BMW). GM trashed the beloved Saab. (I wonder if you accept the views of the Swedish on car design given that, by your reckoning, they were unable to save their own auto industry). Chrysler have even done it themselves, with the purchase of British Hillman/Humber/Singer and French Simca in the 1960s/70s to create Chrysler Europe. That was left to wither & die and the remains sold to Peugeot. That's business. Perhaps Chrysler got their comeuppance. Doesn't mean they can't design or build a Jeep anymore or that an American auto reviewer's opinions are less valid because the 'home' industry is now less American owned. Please be nicer with your nationalistic comments. Or we'll have our language back, thanks. 😉

I'm from Japan and I want to ask a question to British people since we are both a "RHD" country. Our cars(Japanese domestic models) have a turn signal lever on the right side of a steering wheel which I think makes much more sense and is easier to use for RHD cars, especially when a car has a manual transmission. Have you ever thought why it's not on the right side of a steering wheel in the UK?
@MrTrull1
8 жыл бұрын
pepsicoke2009 British manufacturers used to do the same in the UK, but when foreign manufacturers (European) converted their cars to RHD for sale in the UK they kept the switches the same (ie indicators on left). As more & more foreign cars were sold here, it just became the standard format & British manufacturers followed suit. Early Korean cars here had indicator switches set up correctly for RHD (I have owned a 2001 Daewoo Matiz & a 2006 Kia Picanto), but they have switched to the standard arrangement now too.

Steering is extremely light and Darty on my Fiat 124 same as the Miata and the 6speed tranny is no where near as pleasing as Mazdas older and original 5 speed. 5 speed has wonderful mechanical feel to it . The 6 speed is in my view Honda feel and good just not as brilliant as the Mazda 5spd. I own both so easy to compare. Note to Mazda I chose the Fiat 124 over the latest Miata because they ruined the look of the new Miata. So instead of buying my 7th Mazda Miata I bought my first Fiat. Not sure Mazda intended to lose market share but I know I'm not the only one.

I have been considering various two seat roadsters as a possible replacement for my current weekend driver, a 2009 Sky Redline purchased new. The biggest obstacle to seriously considering this vehicle is the engine. My current vehicle is a twin scroll 2.0 liter turbo. Boost kicks in at ~2000 RPM. And it continues to the red line. Stock it is 260/260. My vehicle has the Turbo Upgrade Kit factory option which boosts the output to ~325/325. The one thing I like about the 124 is its weight. My Redline weighs ~3300 lbs. The other is the one hand top. The Redline requires you to leave the vehicle to put the top up and down. The lack of a limited slip is another concern with the 124. This might just be a deal killer for me. The 124 is a nice looking looking roadster but, for me it's hard to over look the total lack of low end power and the lack of a limited slip differential.
