I've been meaning to sit down and give this video the time that it deserves for a while now, and finally made that time today....it was definitely worth waiting and doing it right. This is an incredible prop, and effect; it's a wonderful homage to one of the truly great ride experiences that Disney had to offer. Thanks for sharing all of the 'behind the scenes' thought process, design considerations, and key takeaways from such an elaborate prop. The entire haunt community is better off because of it.

You have such an extensive knowledge on how to do so many things! I absolutely love the fiber optic effect- it’s as good as anything Tower of Terror has! I’m super clueless and intimidated by custom lighting, programming- all the electrical things, so if you ever did a basics of all things lighting or just fiber optics, or anything like that, and list all the items you need to accomplish it, I’d watch the crap out of that. I consider myself a “lazy haunter” as the only lighting projects I’ve done is creative placement and painting bulbs. I’ve watched some tutorials on LEDs, but the wiring and chip parts always seem a tad intimidating to me, but I’m so willing to learn! (I taught college Graphic Design for 15 years for crying out loud! I should be able to learn this stuff!)

Kudos to you for wrangling all the fiberoptic cable. After years on working on scenes and events, I’ve become used to the “100? Yeah, 100 ought to be enough” problem. You put in your 100 whatever and you think: that’s IT? And you end up adding about 900. Nothing impresses like excess. It would be neat to see the white lightning illuminate all of “TERROR” in white which then “bleeds” into all red. Excellent work. Well-conceived and flawlessly executed. Have a Happy Hallowe’en!

Awesome stuff. Looks really great! Can you give some info on the LED fiber drivers? How do you know where each color will show up where for each bundle? Or do you know really? Where did you get them and the fiber from?
@SuperTonkers
4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The fibers are all individually hand placed in the prop or item. There are 2 different types of LED drivers. One kind is a static color with a twinkle effect and the other is DMX (lighting protocol) and color / effect can be controlled via a lighting console. We opted to use (3) static led drivers for the “on” “Tulip” “Trail” and (2) DMX Led Drivers for “Terror” that’s how I get the split color. I know when I place a fiber from a certain driver I know what the color will be. These don’t use the big painted effect wheels (like the ufo lights from the 90’s ) which had a rainbow of color chasing. Those are much trickier to know where to place. Usually with those I have to place the fibers first and then carefully bundle the ends in my hand placing certain sections in certain areas. Trial and error after doing several so I kind of know what works and what doesn’t. We purchased a few of the led Drivers and fibers from Amazon and some we had from a previous project. They have become harder to find with all the issues this year. I’ll look around for a link and post if I can find the item. It’s not on amazon at the moment.
@coasterbp

@@SuperTonkers Ok, that makes more sense. I wasn't sure if the LED drivers were capable of doing more than one color at a time, like if the beam output was partitioned in any way. So if you want some twinkle between colors, you need 2 drivers. Also, as someone that worked Tower of Terror for several years and spent many a days right next to that sign, the inspiration is very apparent and you've done a remarkable job replicating it. Well done. (also an avid XLights user here as well...)
@SuperTonkers
4 жыл бұрын
Yea there are (as you know) ones that are capable of doing multiple colors at once but usually a custom colored “effects wheel” is used. This was the “cheapest” options but fiber optics just aren’t cheap lol. How awesome you got to work on tower of terror! That’s a wonderful compliment coming from someone who is quite familiar with the “Disney Magic” 😉. We lived in winter park, FL for 3 yrs. Our Families Company did the design and install work on the musical fountain in Epcot. Sad to see it get removed. You worked with Allen Hopps right? Though we saw you in a live recently. Small world lol. Isn’t XLights just wonderful! Remember light o Rama? The hobby has come a long way! Sounds like we have a lot in common. You still in FL? Do you use xLights for holiday displays?
@SuperTonkers
4 жыл бұрын
The DMX drivers can twinkle between two colors but not twinkle day “red and blue” together would flash red then blue. Hopefully that made some sort of sense lol
@coasterbp
4 жыл бұрын
@@SuperTonkers LOL OMG yes, I know Allen. I worked with Allen at Skull Kingdom for many years when we were both little haunters. That's very funny! I worked for Disney for 10+ years in just about every park... I'm not in Florida anymore. I moved to Vegas in 2008 to work for Cirque du Soleil and then in 2016 moved to Michigan where I am now, for a different job. I do use xLights for Halloween and Christmas. I put a lot of that other stuff on my other channel, which is HauntCoaster. I did start out with LOR. I almost prefer the simplicity of LOR to xLights. I know that pixels are the new wave of everything fancy but its added a whole new layer of complexity to sequencing that can be annoying at times. BUT, there's so much you can do with them.
