Aron, this looks just fantastic. Thanks for the inspiration and the instructable. I am probably going to do this in a small theater room myself shortly. Cheers!

Thanks for an inspiring video and the written blog on your project. I have a fabulous home theater, its only missing one thing - a star ceiling! Your material has inspired me to save $6,000 (I need six 4'x8' panels) and tackle this as a DIY project!

I would like you know how you built the little bart behind the chairs
@nullvalu
7 жыл бұрын
Yep I built that also. Designed it to fit perfectly behind the width of the chairs. Unfortunately I didn't document the process. But basically I built a simple "U" shaped frame out of 2x4s. Then I got some inexpensive 4x8 sheets of beadboard. Cut to size & nailed around the outside. Don't worry about small gaps or imperfections. You get the corner molding peices to cover that and nail into place and it ends up looking very nice & clean when done. I also installed the cabinets and built the frame for the concession area with a fridge area. Then I called in a professional granite installer, had him take measurements and a week later had a beautiful looking top. Obviously this was the most expensive part. Oh - before I installed the inside beadboard panel, I secured the whole thing into the ground using tapcon concrete screws. With it being so top-heavy with the granite I needed it to be solid.

Quick ? What the brand of the All Black ceilings tile did you use?
@nullvalu

There is no brand, it is 100% homemade. Please see my instructables article which provides full details on how I made them - anyone can do it and you'll save a ton of money. www.instructables.com/id/Fiber-Optic-Panel-Star-Ceiling/

Do you have any suggestions on doing this on a flat ceiling?
@nullvalu

If it's not a huge space you could do the whole thing from wall to wall. You'd just need to ensure your strands are long enough to reach to the opposite corners. Otherwise if your ceilings are high enough, I'd hire a pro to create tray in your room. They don't have to be all that deep, just maybe 6" or so.

Love the finished cinema look mate, I'm starting my project next week and using 300 fibres in a 20ft long room. Kind of unsure whether that will be enough though.. How many fibres have you used in total?
@nullvalu
7 жыл бұрын
I used a 600-strand kit. My area is 169 sqft. (26' x 6.5') so that comes to about 3.5 strands per sqft. So depending on your total area, I'd try to stay between 3-4 stars per sqft.. depending on the look you're going for.

How many strands per square foot did you install? Trying to determine the star density for myself...
@nullvalu
7 жыл бұрын
I think it worked out to something like 4-6 strands per sq ft. I wanted to keep it random.. really depends on the look you're going for. Keep in mind, if they're packed too densely it'll be way to bright. Sure it'll look neat but day to day actually using your room it'll become a distraction. In fact when using our theater room, I keep the lights on their lowest brightness setting. Still creates a perfect star effect without washing out the screen or becoming a distraction.

Thanks Aron! That's really helpful to have the personal experience talking. I contacted a rep for a company that makes these kits, gave my dimensions, and was told that in my space I would get about 4.5 per sq.ft. When I asked for more info regarding minimum/maximum/recommended amounts, they sent me a chart - which was helpful, but not to the degree I think your answer gives. Yes, I can see how more light introduced into the area would be counterproductive. But, like most probably would say, I want to make sure that we have a nice coverage and the star field "filled." Just no way of knowing for sure - that is until I looked at your video and results. Seems like that was what I am looking for as far as density. BTW: the chart I got can be found here: s4.postimg.org/eyz1vxvf1/density.jpg I was considering going higher and would probably have been 10 stars per sq.ft. - but your response has me now rethinking that. I still wonder if 4 or 5 is enough, and maybe if I should get two units? (the largest capacity one coupled with a smaller one)
@nullvalu
7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if it's mentioned in the writeup, but the kit I bought comes with 3 different sized star strands. Some are really thin, small stars, a few a large/bright stars, and there is a size between. This creates a very nice varied effect. So I'd stick with the 4.5 density using the 3-size star strands.

Here's where I purchased mine from. www.wiedamark.com/fiberopticstarfieldceilings.aspx - what size area is your star field going to be? Mine was 169sqft, so I went with the 600-strand 3-size kit. Doing the math my density came out to just under 4 per sqft.
@de5ignr

It may have - I just looked back on this article (makezine.com/projects/diy-fiber-optic-star-ceiling/) and saw that you got your kit from the same people I'm considering (one of two ) - Wiedamark. You probably got the same kit I'm looking at getting, the 600 3 size star kit. What I found interesting was that a rep said that multiple units could/would work together and be controlled by one remote control.
